Chapter 347 – I Gave You Everything Of Me...I Wasn’t Still Enough?

At the same time, while Theophane and Tiger were enjoying their free days killing and framing Sarah, the woman herself was in the park of the Outer Ring.

She was standing behind a huge tree, hidden from everyone, its leaves green and yellow, big and shiny, filling the sky above her.

It was midday, and the bloody sun was already high in the sky, glowering intensely over her as if she had done something wrong.

Wrong...wrong...?

’...yes. Maybe I did something wrong. Maybe that’s why...maybe that’s why I can’t—!’

Sarah pressed her lips together, clenching her jaw tightly, trying not to think of anything bad about herself.

It was harder than she thought.

She was wearing a long black skirt that reached just above her ankles and a cute white top that hugged her waist perfectly, showing her slim figure.

She didn’t wear any jewelry, not even earrings, only tying her hair into two big knots and pinning them upward.

A blue bag from a not-so-rich brand — Fall et Frères — hung from her right shoulder.

Sarah of Secrecy was stunningly cute. There was something soft and serene about her presence that simply brought peace to her surroundings.

But that day, there was something more to her presence. It was sadness. It was despair. And it was...anger.

Her blue eyes were shaking wildly, glistening as if permanently battling whether to shed tears or not.

She took a deep breath to calm herself and soon heard footsteps heading toward her. Her breath caught in her throat, and the world around her turned deathly silent.

A silence she immediately hated, for in that silence, her own heart took upon itself the daring duty of filling it with rhythmic yet unnecessarily loud heartbeats.

It didn’t take more than a few seconds for someone to stand before her, just a couple of steps away.

Sarah didn’t need to lift her head to know who it was.

The way he placed his feet, how his scent filled the air around him, or simply his very presence...all of those were things she had come to memorize so deeply that her brain could grasp them instantly.

She could recognize him among billions of other men.

And she would have chosen him every single time, in every single lifetime, even among billions of men.

But...

"You chose her, didn’t you?" Sarah said slowly, her voice sounding as though it came from somewhere deep and hollow within her.

She didn’t even lift her head to look at his face, still staring at the ground.

Raven Hood stood before his former maid and felt as though the words had been robbed from his mouth at her question.

He opened his mouth only to close it again, then repeated the same motion over and over until, finally, Sarah beat him to it.

"I guess you did." She finally gathered her courage and lifted her head.

Raven’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of her face. She was crying, tears streamed silently down her cheeks.

"I...I..." He tried to speak, yet seemed to lose all strength before Sarah’s blue eyes shedding such painful tears.

It felt as though someone had taken a spear and pierced his heart repeatedly with it.

"I am sorry." Raven said slowly, clenching his fists. "I am sorry—!"

"I gave you everything of me." For the first time in her whole life, Sarah interrupted the words of her Prince. "You know that, Prince? I gave you everything of me."

Raven’s heart shook, yet his eyes didn’t dare leave hers.

"I gave you my love, my trust, my devotion...I gave you my body, Prince." Sarah’s voice was oddly calm despite the tears, her face weary and tired, her eyes faraway, as if Raven were speaking to a broken version of the Sarah he once knew.

"Yet despite all of that, I wasn’t enough, was I?"

"No!" Raven shook his head. "It’s not that you are not enough! Don’t ever say that to yourself, Sarah! You are more than enough. You are everything a man could ever hope for—!"

"But not you."

"I...It’s different." He muttered. "My situation is different. It’s more complicated than that."

"It’s alright." Sarah said, nodding blankly. "I did my best to earn your love, but doing your best never guarantees success. I have always known that, but I dared to dream this time."

She chuckled humorlessly.

"I am a fool. I should have known that I never stood a chance between you and Anesthesia. I should have known my place better. I was just a bed—!"

"You are not—!"

"Prince, don’t interrupt me."

Sarah cut him off again, her face still placid and calm.

"I was just a bed warmer for you. And maybe you came to respect me, but you never loved me. I knew all of that, yet I convinced myself that there was still a chance. That there was still a way for me to be with you...not as a maid, not as your sex partner...but as your girlfriend and eventually...as your wife."

Raven’s head was becoming slightly dizzy, shame threatening to choke him from within.

"S-Sarah..."

"But it’s okay." Sarah smiled, and Raven had never seen such a sad smile. "I simply want something from you now, Prince. One last thing. I beg you..."

She bowed her head toward him, tears still streaming down her cheeks.

"...free me from my duties."

BADUM—!

Raven staggered a step backward, the words feeling like an uppercut straight to his gut.

"I...I can no longer be your maid. I beg you. Allow me to go."

"S-Sarah, wait! We can—!"

"Please."

"No, let’s—!"

"I am asking simply because I wish to leave on good terms, Prince." She lifted her head again, her eyes puffy and red. "I will leave either way. So please, out of respect for the feelings I have for you and whatever respect you might have for me...free me, Prince of Hood."

Raven was speechless for a long moment, and it seemed as though his vision had blurred.

He looked at Sarah and saw a broken woman who loved him with all the sincerity possible.

And that same woman would disdain him, hate him even, if he refused to acknowledge her last desire.

If he had failed her in everything else, Raven didn’t want to fail her — and fail himself — in this one last thing.

So he lowered his head, and with his heart in his throat,

"I free you, Sarah." Raven muttered. "From now on, you are no longer—!"

The Prince suddenly stopped and lifted his head.

Sarah was gone.

And with that, he knew.

He knew with a chilling certainty that made his knees go weak that Sarah was gone from his life.

Raven’s knees hit the ground.
