Chapter 402 – How Does That Sound?

The explosion of the Church of Death shook the very earth, as though the ground itself couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Everyone inside the church was swallowed by flames instantly, their cries of shock, despair, and outrage silenced the moment fire filled their mouths, burning everything down to ash.

Those outside only felt the shockwave. But a Tier Four blast carried enough heat to kill weaker commoners outright, or badly wound others, leaving them half-dead or unconscious.

The entire city descended into chaos within seconds. Blowing up the very church of the god the whole kingdom worshipped was blasphemy of the highest order.

Some people could barely process what was happening, sprinting away with everything they had.

Carriages stopped mid-route, drivers abandoning them entirely before joining the mass exodus. A few drivers, though, tried pushing their carriages straight through the crowd.

A stupid mistake. Already on edge, the crowd turned on those drivers with brutal, merciless force, killing them where they stood.

Death thickened around the city fast, the chaos pulling the worst out of everyone caught in it.

Amid the fleeing crowd, some pulled out their phones with trembling hands, recording the crimson-blue flames still climbing towards the sky, the church slowly collapsing in on itself.

"Vorn! We’re under attack! We’re under attack!"

"Call the Deathless Crusaders, damn it! The church is burning! What about the Sisters and guards? What about everyone inside, praying to the Lord of Death?"

"Death! Death! Death!" a woman screamed, collapsing to her knees, staring at the burning church as if her very faith were bursting out through eyes filled with fear, awe, and agony. "They prayed to the Lord of Death, and received Death!" she continued, spitting the words out. "Death! Death! Death!"

"My daughter was in there! My daughter!" a frail old man, walking with a cane, tried pushing towards the church, tears streaming down. "I want my—!"

"Please, don’t go," Sarah caught his arm gently, looking at him with mercy and love. "Don’t go in there. You’ll die."

"But my daughter! My daughter—!"

"Your daughter wouldn’t want you to die. You have to live. All of you have to live!" Sarah cried out, loud enough for everyone around to hear, tears streaming down her own face as she stared at the church, her whole body trembling. "This has to be a sign! A sign from the Lord of Death! And this sign means one thing, and one thing only..."

Even in the chaos, people began turning towards her.

"Death doesn’t knock before it enters! Death doesn’t warn you! It doesn’t give you time to prepare for the grief, the regret, for everything you wish you’d done differently! Death can arrive at any moment, at any time!"

Sarah’s voice carried such fervor that, for some strange, twisted reason, everyone listening felt their faith in Vorn growing stronger, right there.

"This is a sign, people of Badur! A warning too, believers of Death! The Lord of Death is showing you — letting you witness with your own eyes — what could happen to any one of us! And do you know what he wants from us?!"

She held the old man tight, looking into his eyes with a compassion so raw it was almost frightening.

"He wants you to know death. To see it. To understand it. Not so you’ll fear it, but so you’ll understand the life that comes before it."

Sarah’s grip tightened further.

"Because whoever knows death knows how to die..." her tearful eyes swept across the crowd. "...and whoever knows how to die will finally know how to live!"

"WOAHHHHHHH!!!!" the crowd around Sarah roared, faces flushed, drinking in her words.

Their faith in Vorn surged to an almost absurd degree in that moment, reading the whole scene as a divine sign.

The old man sobbed, wailed, broke down as if made of glass.

Because knowing death was inevitable never made the pain of losing someone you loved disappear.

But maybe that was exactly the point. To remember the pain. To learn to carry it. To learn to live better, because to commoners like them, death was nothing less than the ultimate truth.

And the Kingdom of Death, their eternal home.

After Sarah’s stirring words, spoken amid the distress and chaos, the crowd finally broke into flight, fleeing the burning church.

Sarah, meanwhile, kept up her act: weeping for the dead inside, urging others to run faster, to pray to Vorn.

By the time a hundred people had gathered around her, hanging on every word, Sarah had already earned herself a nickname.

"Praise the Lord of Death, Vorn!" Sarah cried out.

"PRAISE THE LORD OF DEATH!"

’Sorry, Queen for this. My faith stays with you. Always.’

Ananke, from within her own Gate, smiled at the chaos unfolding.

[I’m aware.]

...

The Church’s explosion didn’t escape the Deathless Prison’s notice. In fact, Widow and Helene were among the very first informed.

One was a Knight Seat of Death, the other the High Priestess of Death herself.

The moment the news reached them, both shot up from their seats, faces and body language betraying shock at the highest level.

At the same moment, a prison guard burst into the room, face twisted with despair and urgency.

"The Church!" he screamed. "The Church’s been blown up! We’re under attack!!"

The whole room shot to its feet. Confusion flickered across every face before understanding hit, hearts stumbling dangerously.

"What the fuck do you mean by that?" Morgan cursed. Inside her shadow, Mort, who’d been focused entirely on Morenna, his former wife, snapped his attention towards the unfolding crisis instead.

The Church of Death, burned down?!

Morenna herself was stunned. Who would even dare something like this?

Murmurs and confused whispers rippled through the entire room.

But neither Widow nor Helene could afford to linger and discuss it. Duty, and a genuinely grave situation, called.

"We’re reporting the Call of Justice concluded!" Widow said, her body dissolving into a burst of crow feathers, vanishing from the Deathless Prison instantly, leaving everyone behind.

Helene shot Cassius one last look, eyes wide with sudden understanding, and found his expression just as troubled, just as shocked, as everyone else’s.

"Who would dare burn down the Church of Death? Just WHO?" Cassius cried out, outraged.

But one glance into his eyes told her everything she needed to know.

’He did this,’ Helene thought, dread settling over her. ’Lord Seraph did this!’

That was her last thought before she vanished too, racing straight for her church, heart hammering.

Even inside the room, people began pouring out, sprinting to witness the burning church for themselves.

It was a historic moment. The very first time the Church of Death had ever been destroyed.

How, though? Where were the Guards?

In the end, only Morgan, Dorian, Esmeray, Morenna, William, Meadow, Diaila, and finally Cassius remained.

A handful of prison guards stayed behind too, trying to keep order, gently urging everyone else out without rushing.

Cassius stepped down from the platform, and Morgan and Dorian rushed to him instantly, showering him with questions, checking he was alright.

"Cass, why must you always stir up trouble wherever you go!" Morgan said, worry plain on her face, hands checking over him.

"My pookie!" Dorian said, affection mixed with an undertone of nerves. "It’s been so long since I’ve seen you! And of course it’s while you’re in the middle of causing drama!"

"Well, I’m afraid this is only the beginning," Cassius said, a slow smile spreading, stopping both his siblings in their tracks. "I’m so glad you two showed up. Would’ve been even better with the twins here too, but I suppose the three of us will manage just fine."

Both Morgan and Dorian felt something ominous settling over them.

"What do you mean?" Morgan asked, nervous.

"Please, for the love of anything left in this fucking world, don’t say something stupid, pookie! Just don’t—!"

"I need your help killing a prisoner inside this prison, while the chaos is still running," Cassius said, and both siblings’ eyes went wide.

"A little Desdemona sibling activity..."

He grinned.

"...how does that sound?"
