Chapter 408 – Missions Rewards [1]
Cassius was grateful that everything was over. Not over in the literal sense, but at least, for the rest of the day, everything was over.
He was now in the Royal Palace, in the same room he had been during the Royal Event ceremony.
The room of his mother.
Just like before, there was still her faint presence lingering inside the room, as if the very walls refused to let go of her memory, holding it dear within them.
The bed was as comfortable as ever, but Cassius was not actually paying attention to that. His mind was swirling back in time, remembering things that didn’t happen not that long ago, yet it felt like years had passed.
It seemed, the room, too, held many memories for him.
This was where he had recruited Sarah, not believing at all that that pitiful maid could become the woman she was today. A woman who was trying her best to find herself, despite being abandoned by the very thing her whole self was centered upon.
Cassius allowed himself to think, just for a moment, what would he do if Isolde ever came to die? If she chose to leave him for someone else, or something else?
What would happen then? It was a question he would never be able to answer.
Not because it was painful to think about, even though it was, but simply because one could hardly take the time to think of a future that could not exist.
He was not thinking that because he believed Isolde would never die, or even, leave him.
But it was simply that if that event came to pass, then the man at that point would no longer be Cassius.
It would be someone else. Another man. A man with a name Cassius, yes, but another man entirely. A man whose actions, or even motivations, he couldn’t predict.
So it was useless to think about it.
’And there was Persephone.’ Cassius’s thoughts continued, lying down on his back, his hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling, ’I saw the Head Maid, but she didn’t have the same hair and even the eyes of Persephone. It was different. Completely different from the one I knew. Even her attitude was the complete opposite.’
He had asked his grandmother about it, and she told him that it was a normal occurrence.
The Head Maid of Hood was a strange entity that had existed since the First Ancestor, and even served him. It’s an Entity that held inside many different identities, and these identities took their turns to be the Head Maid at different times.
Cassius had asked her when Persephone would come back. Morenna didn’t have an answer. He was disappointed.
And he didn’t know why, but Cassius had this strange impression that he would never see her again. And that impression bothered him a great deal, as if he was missing something he would come to deeply regret in the future.
’Regret.’ Cassius thought, sighing. The word was trying to make him remember what he had done lately, but he did his best to not think too much of it.
These two missions have been ridiculously hard, in all honesty, both mentally and physically. Especially mentally.
He was targeted by many Fourth rank beings. Then while being targeted, he was supposed to find a way to steal the artifacts without being seen by anyone.
Then came the Museum of Legends, where he had provoked all of them in a Call of Justice just to have a legit way to enter the Deathless Prison. And all that, only 3 hours after witnessing battles between many Fourth ranks, and a strange Faceless Creature.
Cassius has been exhausted. Yet he had pushed through and gone to the Deathless Prison.
Once there, only for the sake of creating enough diversion...he had ordered the explosion of the Church of Death. Cassius didn’t know how many people had died because of that action, and frankly he didn’t want to know.
He had made that choice because he needed to complete his Quest. He had made all those choices, in fact, to get power.
And that power was only for the sake of his family.
Because if not for them risking extermination; and the fact his ancestors kept giving him so many things, then Cassius would have been satisfied with a quiet life, just like any other random human walking the earth.
A life with his wife, on a small island and tranquil forest at the edge. He would then hunt their own food, take care of their own water, and live in peace and harmony.
Sometimes they could go down, witness and enjoy the life of the city, then go back to their world.
Then when Isolde was ready, a child could be born. A little Cassius. Or maybe a little Isolde?
Those thoughts put an unconscious peaceful smile on Cassius’s face, seeking a life many people would never think of him wanting.
But that life had been denied to him.
The World had branded him as a Villain. And the main way to be strong was to act like one.
That was his fate. And he didn’t particularly care about fighting his fate. He would accept it as long as it was the way to save and protect his family.
’I am thinking too much, aren’t I?’ Cassius mused with a wry smile, unable to sleep despite being heavily tired.
Widow of the Goddess had said tomorrow the Call of Justice would resume, and a verdict would be given. So he needed rest.
A rest that refused to come.
’I might as well take this time and receive my Quest rewards then.’
He lifted himself up, sitting on the bed, his back against it.
Taking a deep breath, Cassius allowed the system panel to flicker in front of him, his rewards given.
DING!
[You have completed the Quest: First To Catch The Bloody Fishes!]
[Description: It was Absolute Chaos, Last Born. Truly, it was. And it was so entertaining to watch that we have invited one special being to watch the whole event with us.
Unfortunately, the special being didn’t like you. ’Too smart,’ he said with disdain. But fret not, Last Born!
He might not like you, but he was especially fond of the pitiful mortal woman who learned the beauty of murder.
Well, what to say? You might have made a bloody extra character a damn Blessed.
Now, that’s completely fantastic. You are becoming more and more the type of being we would love to see living a bit longer, but also more and more the type of being every god on the Hero Path would want to kill.
Unfortunately, we are only watchers.
So Survive, Last Born.
The Game Must Go On!]
[Rewards:
-{Footsteps of the Thief} is considering taking Diaila Law as Blessed. Because you played a part by showing to the world her hidden potential, you gain 50,000,000 VP.
-Hidden Information about MasterofPaths Seven Artifacts and One Key: There is something many people don’t know about MasterofPaths, and it’s the fact that he was a really, bloody little bastard who liked a bit too much to experiment on everyone and everything. How do you think he found out the Concept of Paths? Of {Commands}? The bastard was a True Mad Scientist before even your ancestor, Albert.
Now here’s where things get wicked, Last Born.
Every one of MasterofPaths’s Seven Legendary artifacts held a sealed entity, or a part of an entity sealed inside. And obtaining that artifact means obtaining the power of the sealed entity, as MasterofPaths had made the Artifacts Characteristics ready to fuse with the one who found them.
The Third Artifact, Remain of the Dead God, held a part of the Dead God, Worm of WorldTree.
Of course, it’s not that easy. You need the Key to truly open the Artifacts and have the chance to obtain the Characteristic.
And you have the Key. Or rather, you once did.
That little pen you think was nothing but a pen. You remember that pen? Yes, Last Born. That pen is the Key.
And this is when we need to ask you: do you really think a pen made by MasterofPaths would be...a pen?
And yet, you stupidly gave it to Meadow Wealth, Chosen of Truth. Now, you lost it.
The Key has chosen its master. And it’s not you.
Stupid, Cassius. Very Stupid.]
Cassius stared at this long fucking panel and his eyes blasted wide open, recalling the pen of MasterofPaths he had given to Meadow.
The very Pen that was the Key to obtain a Characteristic of a Dead God.
A bloody dead god!
The dead god he had been looking for all this time!
"Queen’s breath, what in the world did I do?!"
