Chapter 329 : The Final Phase[3]
Chapter 329 : The Final Phase[3]
Delphine interrupted again from the outside, unaware of the internal conversation. "Whether this is a noble sacrifice or just an arrogant spectacle, stepping out there makes you a dead man before the battle even begins."
Jax responded by pulling both his swords from their sheaths and said with a grin. "Isn’t that the most beautiful part? The ultimate rule of war is that to guarantee victory you must fight as if you are already dead. Since you have already pronounced me dead before I even take a step, there is no way they can kill what no longer exists."
Delphine didn’t like that answer one bit and after clicking her tongue she said. "Fine, do whatever you want. But know this, we have a score to settle so don’t just foolishly die right here."
Jax said without a shred of worry even after knowing what he was about to face. "You are contradicting your own logic, Delphine. You just spent a whole minute convincing me I was already dead. But let’s not waste our breath on semantics."
He looked at Bruise Lee and said. "Guide them safely back to yesterday’s library." Then he turned to Clarice but completely failed to recall her actual name so he just said. "Malice, take the front and carve a path for them."
As the group positioned themselves to leave, the surrounding warriors began shouting questions at their own sword saint who was now protecting the invaders from the front. "Lady Clarice, why are you protecting these criminals?! Is there a reason for this?! Did the Church issue a revelation?!"
Their confused questions were cut short by a viking-built spearsman who roared over all of them. "Open your blind eyes, you fools! She has been corrupted or being puppeteer by these abyssal parasites! She committed the ultimate treason by striking down our Grand Marshal! It is our sworn duty to drag her back to the Church in chains and to mount the heads of these vermin on our spears!"
From the flank, a panicked soldier pointed a trembling finger at the group. "Commander! The child in walking away that is the Witch of Eternity we captured last night!"
The spearman’s eyes widened before contorting into pure, bloodthirsty rage. "The Witch?! Leave none of them alive! Butcher the heretics and bring me the child!"
And then the slaughter started. Malice carved the path forward through the blood of her former comrades with the mechanical precision of a puppet whose strings were held by Jax while Jax himself watched their backs and cut down whoever tried to attack from behind. The girls contributed blows from the sidelines as they pushed through the chaos.
It went on for a short but brutal period until the party reached the border gates where the sword saint’s glare alone was enough to scare the poor gatekeeper into opening the gates and then running away from his own post.
As the girls passed through to the outer side, Jax closed the massive gates behind them by pulling the lever and sealed himself inside with only Malice standing beside him. Facing the entire army alone.
He had succeeded in isolating his students along with Tempris on the safe side and now he only needed to buy as much time as possible until Tempris and child Echidna were taken away by the mysterious woman. And then pray that this was the true ending of the dungeon.
The real fight started now as Jax found himself cornered against the wall with no place to go, but instead of handicap and bad positioning he held a smile and said. "Great. Now I don’t even have to worry about looking behind me when I start swinging."
[Half an hour later]
The whole field was a complete mess. What was supposed to be an army of a thousand had been trimmed down to merely around two hundred as the rest were either dead or had fled the battlefield deciding that their lives and the people waiting at home for them were far more precious than this fight.
What remained was the cream of the crop, the elite warriors who refused to run, and they were making things significantly worse for Jax with every passing minute.
Malice was evaporating as her summoned form had been defeated beyond recovery. And Jax was crawling toward the gate to find something to support himself and stand back up after taking multiple wide-area spells that had turned his body into a collection of burns, cuts, and frozen wounds.
The spearsman commanded from behind the remaining forces. "Open the gates and catch the runaways!"
His soldiers followed the order and began working the gate mechanism while the spearsman himself walked toward Jax with a smirk of absolute victory. He raised his spear to pierce through the crawling professor and end the most chaotic evening in the empire’s history.
But as soon as that spear reached its peak, an arrow pierced cleanly through the spearsman’s skull and he collapsed to the ground with his smirk still frozen on his face.
Jax followed the trajectory of the arrow and spotted Delphine standing in the small gap created by the opening gate. She immediately started raining arrows on the soldiers surrounding Jax, clearing a circle of safety around him before rushing to his side.
Jax said through the pain while pulling an ice spear out of his own chest with a grunt. "What are you doing here? Wasn’t my order entirely clear—"
She cut him off without hesitation. "I told you we had a score to settle. I refuse to owe my life to a dead man, Professor. We are officially even now."
She pulled another arrow from thick air and fired it into an approaching soldier without even looking at Jax as she added. "So don’t you dare try to brag about saving my life after I just saved yours."
