Chapter 341 : Broken Rox
Chapter 341 : Broken Rox
While Astrid spent her entire carriage ride violently cursing her sweet aunt and making life absolutely miserable for Rora, a different headache was happening elsewhere.
Inside another moving carriage, Jax was in the middle of ruthlessly lecturing another woman.
This entire mess had escalated yesterday when Jax tried to explain his unbelievable actions. He had stood there nervously, attempting to lie his way out of the situation while staring at Astrid and Echidna, whose souls had visibly left their respective hosted bodies.
He had rubbed his neck and delivered the worst excuse in human history. He tried to claim her enchanting love had totally blinded him. He blamed the freezing weather for making them seek warmth. He awkwardly stated that the heat of the moment had just magically led to certain things happening.
Astrid had lacked the mental capacity to process a single word of that ridiculous story. Echidna had not even bothered to comment. Her silence inside his head had been so loud it almost echoed.
Military preparations started immediately after that awkward silence. Jax sent Rudiger rushing back to his estate to grab the ultimate weapon for the upcoming bloodbath. He specifically requested his newly obtained Carnage Blade.
But that simple retrieval mission brought back more than just a legendary bloodthirsty sword. It also delivered a very unexpected troublemaker right to his doorstep.
And right now, inside his own carriage, Jax had finally cornered that exact sneaky troublemaker. He had grown highly suspicious of a random knight who kept shooting him nervous glances at regular intervals.
Eventually he completely lost his patience and pressed his sword directly against the throat of the stranger, demanding they reveal their identity. The moment the heavy helmet came off, his anger spiked.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
It was Roxana. She did not show a single ounce of fear as she stared right back at his blade. "I am here to make sure you avoid doing anything entirely reckless. I am also here to help you as a direct repayment for saving my sister."
Blind rage swallowed him. "I never once asked for your help or your protection. Why are you constantly trying to pry into my life and my personal affairs? Why do you not just stay locked inside your assigned house and drink until you pass out."
Roxana felt her entire world shatter after hearing those toxic words.
She stood there in silence while trying to swallow the immense pain before she finally spoke.
"I am so sorry, professor. For the foolish stubbornness that dragged me out here. I am sorry for trusting my own heart when it screamed at me to find you after Rudiger told me Queen Adelina was abducted."
She looked down at the floor. "I apologize for listening to my selfish heart when it refused to leave your side or abandon your mansion. I was just being entirely selfish because I loved the thrill and the pure fun of being near you."
She looked back up at him. "I knew getting involved with you meant pure danger, but every passing day felt like an amazing adventure. Being with you was the very first time I actually felt alive instead of just numbly existing. That is why leaving your house and leaving your side hurt me so much. I did not want to abandon your side or the short yet beautifully twisted memories I built there. But deep down, I always knew I was just another useless weight dragging you down, professor."
A heartbreakingly sad smile formed on her lips as heavy tears gathered on her eyelashes.
She spun around to hide her tears and refused to let him see her looking so pathetic. She forced her breathing to steady and violently pulled her old arrogant mask back over her face. She spoke without turning back.
"How dare you ever view me as a dead weight. You are the one who will take a massive loss if I walk away. Your own stupidity will get you killed a thousand times, and I will sit back with a cold bottle of beer and enjoy the show while completely ignoring your pleas for salvation."
Her voice cracked once but she ran right over the crack. "Oh, and speaking of beer. I will finally be able to enjoy it in peace without anyone constantly nagging me."
Jax felt his stomach drop.
Every stiff movement of her body language proved she was just desperately trying to salvage her broken ego. His heart sank with heavy guilt.
He finally understood the pure intentions hiding inside the mind of this chaotic drunk. He felt disgusted with himself for spewing such toxic anger at a woman who only wanted to keep him safe.
He tried to speak softly to apologize. "Roxana, I am so..."
She forcefully spoke over him to stop the apology cold. "Let us establish some ground rules right now. We will no longer meddle in the personal affairs of each other. We will simply never see each other again after today."
Jax shook his head in panic. "That is not what I meant."
She shot back with pure defensive anger. "What else could you possibly mean? This is exactly what your words meant and exactly what you wanted. So granting you your freedom is the least I can do to repay your past kindness. We will survive whatever hell you are marching into today, and then we will permanently separate our paths."
She looked back over her shoulder with a painfully sad smile. "I will pray that you finally achieve whatever secret goal you are working so desperately for. I just hope your luck never completely runs out while you play these suicidal games."
She practically vanished from his sight the exact second those painful words left her lips. She locked herself inside the room of the carriage before Jax could even attempt to stop her.
Jax stood frozen in front of the locked door, sword still loose in his hand, his entire body refusing to move.
’You absolute fool. You took a knife meant for Loki and stabbed the wrong person with it. Again.’
Before he could chase her or knock on that door or do anything at all, a soldier suddenly spoke up from the hallway.
"Professor, we have arrived at the outer gates of Veldora."
Jax gave the wooden door one last sorrowful look before turning around and dashing completely out of the carriage.
He sprinted straight toward the kingdom outpost, where the stationed guards were having a massive panic attack over the overwhelming military presence rolling up to their doorstep. The guards instantly dropped into a deep bow the second they recognized the famous savior of their entire kingdom.
Jax tried to diffuse the situation instantly. "Please relax because these guys are only here to help your kingdom. Look at the carriages right now because they are the full force of the Silver Vanguard."
The guards stared at him with pure confusion. They were completely baffled by his definition of help.
Jax pushed forward with intense desperation leaking into his voice. "We have absolutely no time to waste so give it to me straight. Tell me every single detail you know about what happened. Explain how and who kidnapped Adelina or just point me toward any tiny clue."
The guards simply stared back with total bewilderment. One guard finally scratched his head and spoke. "Sir Jax if you are referring to the upcoming territorial inspection then the Chamberlain is scheduled to take her majesty later today. However there is still plenty of time."
Jax stood there in absolute stunned silence. "Wait what exactly are you talking about? Hasn’t Adelina been abducted?"
The guards exchanged entirely lost expressions before the second one nervously answered him. "There must be some kind of terrible misunderstanding sir. Her highness is currently supposed to be completely safe inside her royal palace."
Jax hissed through his teeth as a sickening feeling twisted his stomach.
He forcefully shoved the guards out of his way and took off running directly toward the heart of the capital while his mind was racing frantically.
He had originally come here desperately hoping to find a clue about her location, since Loki had not mentioned a single detail about it in the letter. But now he realized he had completely failed to account for a much darker plot.
Time blurred as he sprinted all the way to the royal palace gates. He brutally shoved the defensive guards away and barged straight through the grand entrance.
A swarm of angry palace soldiers immediately chased after him, screaming about high treason. Their boots hammered against the marble in a chorus of panic and confusion.
Astrid, Albert, and Rora abandoned their carriages entirely and followed right on his heels into the exploding madness.
