Chapter 382: Sianna And Jax

Chapter 382: Chapter 382: Sianna And Jax

From a distance, Nadia and Delphine stood watching the whole conversation unfold between Sianna and Jax. They’d been studying the pair from the very start, right up until that barbarian came crawling in and interrupted them.

Delphine tugged at her own hair in pure confusion as she watched the two of them chatting away like it was nothing. It refused to make sense.

Her strict, stone-faced mother, holding a casual conversation with a man, and a commoner at that, without a single flicker of disgust. She wasn’t even losing her temper at Jax being dramatic all over the place.

She’d even caught a smile once. A tiny one, lasting barely a millisecond, ghosting across her mother’s face right after a panicked Jax said something to her in the wake of seeing the barbarian’s state.

Delphine turned to Nadia. “The fuck is going on? Did someone possess mother? Because nothing short of that explains any of this. Tell me, Nadia. Tell me what the hell is happening before I completely lose my mind. And don’t play dumb, I know you know something.”

Nadia’s eyes stayed locked on Jax, burning with rage. “My lady lost the spark all of us loved to see in her, ever since her encounter with this man. She’s been more spaced out, more distant, these past weeks. But there’s no sign of anyone taking her over. I don’t know what’s happening to my liege.”

Her jaw tightened. “But there is one thing I am certain of. I’m cutting this man down the very moment I get the chance.”

And that was when Delphine saw something that damn near blew the top of her skull off.

Her mother, having just finished silencing the barbarian, was now conversing with Jax, and the whole exchange looked exactly like a wife shooting down her husband’s request for a PS5 while the husband protested like a small child, arms flailing, explaining in great detail why this purchase was, in fact, a life-or-death necessity.

And there it was again. A smile. Maybe even a laugh, one her mother was fighting with everything she had to smother. Delphine racked her brain trying to summon the last time she’d witnessed her mother genuinely laugh, and came up with nothing. Not one honest laugh in her entire memory, only those triumphant, villainous cackles she saved for crushing her enemies.

And then Jax’s earlier words came drifting back to ring in her ears. ‘Maybe she wants me to be your brand-new daddy.’

Horror flooded Delphine’s face. ‘There’s no way. Absolutely no way.’ Then, against her every wish, her mind dragged up the exact moment in the forest where Jax and her mother had both been standing there naked, and the thought crept in anyway. ‘Don’t tell me mother actually liked it. Don’t tell me she fell for him.’

Delphine turned to Nadia and delivered what she’d decided would be her parting words on the matter. “All the best, Nadia. I’m cheering for you. Truly.”

But then a second realization slammed into her, and it was so much worse. If this man gets killed by Nadia, and word of it ever reached House Aleris, there was no telling what nightmare Astrid would come and drop on their heads.

And if she didn’t stop Nadia, an even bigger bomb was waiting to go off on her family by same Astrid because her own mother would effectively be trying to snatch a man straight out of a crocodile’s jaws.

And knowing her mother’s relentless, bottomless stubbornness, Delphine could not recall a single thing, in all her years, that the woman had ever set her mind to and failed to get.

Her brain was busy cooking up entire tragedies out of this misunderstanding. But honestly, it wasn’t her fault in the slightest. Everything happening in front of her looked exactly that damning.

A few moments earlier, up ahead of them, Sianna had caught the concern written on Jax and walked over to the struggling barbarian. She seized his head, and a pulse of sound magic tore through him.

The man screamed, blood leaking from his nose and his eyes both, until he finally slumped unconscious.

She turned her head toward Jax, still down on one knee, and let the barbarian’s head drop. “Your plan may look risk-free on the surface. But it will bring a great deal more risk down on us. And possibly on you.”

“What do you mean?” Jax said.

Sianna rose back to her feet. “If we simply leave these orcs standing behind us, the questions come flooding in. How did my corps and I slip past them? Why did we leave them alive? Why isn’t there a single casualty among our ranks?”

She went on. “And that’s not the half of it. If even one of these barbarians is left breathing, they’ll talk. They’ll speak of the betrayal, and we’ll be sitting dead center of it.”

“There’s more. We’ll need to cross the Pleasure Grove up ahead, the spot built for picnics and relaxing. And there’s only one route left to us if we want to press forward. There were three bridges. One was destroyed back here. Another was brought down by the mage tower’s own mages during their fight.”

Her tone stayed flat. “Which leaves the last one. And it sits at the exact same spot where the orcs are currently satisfying their needs. So parading a man past them is a tremendous risk in itself.”

Jax was already turning over other options when Sianna laid hers out. “My plan is simple. We kill the orcs while they’re in their vulnerable state, then we wipe out every barbarian that remains. That way, every last problem solves itself at once.”

Jax knew that it was a flawless plan. And yet his intuition wouldn’t stop screaming at him. Then, his eyes settling on the dead barbarian, he found the flaw. “Just like this one, what if some of them already escaped? Won’t they be a problem if they’ve gone off and reported everything?”

Sianna nudged the barbarian over with the toe of her boot. “There isn’t a single chance any of them got away. Not the barbarians. Not the orcs either. I planted my own members out there before I marched to meet you. Their orders are simple. Kill anyone who so much as attempts to flee.”

Jax’s gaze caught the enormous, venomous black veins spidering across the barbarian’s abdomen, and he understood the man was down to his very last breaths as he was attacked even before they met.
