Chapter 347: Chapter 158: Is the Immortals’ Liquor House Yours, Husband?
"However, Wang Wan and his associates have truly overreached."
A chill returned to Ying Zheng’s face.
Then he spoke, "Dunruo."
"Your servant is here," Dunruo approached from the inner palace.
"Investigate the embezzlement of the annual salary for me. No one is off-limits, no matter their rank," Ying Zheng instructed slowly. "In addition, focus your investigation on Wang Wan and Huai Zhuang. Should anything arise, do not make it public. Report directly to me."
"Your servant obeys the decree." Dunruo immediately nodded, then withdrew.
With the Heibing Platform involved in the investigation, all matters would be reported directly to the King of Qin. This was not something the Shaofu or even the Tingwei could suppress.
Of course, this time Ying Zheng had publicly ordered the Shaofu and Tingwei to investigate embezzlement and corruption in full view of the entire court. Li Si would certainly not miss this golden opportunity to crush Wang Wan and his faction.
In Xianyang, a mansion sat just a street away from the Royal Mansion. A brand new plaque had already been hung above the entrance.
Zhao Mansion!
Clearly, this was the residence the current King of Qin had bestowed upon Zhao Feng.
"Yan’er, from now on, this will be our home in Xianyang," Zhao Feng said with a satisfied smile, gazing at the mansion before them. Although he had not yet entered, he could tell it was no smaller than the Royal Mansion.
"My lord," Wang Yan said, her lovely face lighting up with a special brilliance as she looked at the mansion. "I never expected the Great King to bestow this very mansion upon you."
"Is there something special about this mansion?" Zhao Feng asked with a smile.
"This was the residence where the Great King stayed when he returned to Qin. It has simply been vacant all these years," Wang Yan explained with a smile. "I never imagined it would be given to you, my lord."
Though they were not yet officially married, Wang Yan was already addressing him as her lord.
"The Great King is indeed very good to me," Zhao Feng nodded, a complex mix of emotions on his face.
If only it were possible... I wish the King of Qin could live forever. Such favor is truly unforgettable. Zhao Feng thought to himself. He genuinely enjoyed this atmosphere.
But thinking about the future, about what was to come, he knew all too well that the King of Qin could not live forever. Birth, aging, sickness, and death are inevitable.
If history remains unchanged, it will be Hu Hai, Qin Er Shi, who ultimately succeeds the throne. Great King, for the trust you have placed in me and the kindness you have shown me, I will protect your bloodline. I will ensure that Hu Hai does not murder his brothers and sisters. I will absolutely protect them. This is my promise. The promise of Zhao Feng.
At that moment, Zhao Feng made a silent oath in his heart.
"No matter what, this will be our home in Xianyang from now on," Zhao Feng said with a smile. "Later, we’ll bring Mother and Sister over, so our family can always be together."
"Yes," Wang Yan nodded obediently.
Back when she was in the army, she had the air of a great heroine, but since her night of passion with Zhao Feng and the subsequent birth of their son and daughter, her personality and demeanor had transformed.
"Qi’er, Ling’er," Zhao Feng said, smiling as he once again picked up his two children and walked toward the mansion. "Daddy is taking you home. To your future home."
Inside the mansion, the one hundred attendants granted by the Great King were already lined up and waiting.
Upon seeing Zhao Feng enter, they all knelt. "We welcome the Master back to the mansion."
These servants were all bound by servitude and had virtually no status. Being assigned to serve Zhao Feng was a sign of their good performance; otherwise, they would never have received such an opportunity.
"All of you may rise," Zhao Feng said.
"Thank you, Master," the servants replied respectfully. They all kept their heads bowed, not daring to look directly at Zhao Feng.
"Who is the housekeeper?" Zhao Feng asked, his eyes scanning the crowd.
A slightly older man stepped forward. "That would be this servant, Master."
"What is your name?" Zhao Feng inquired.
"My name is Lin Fu, Master," the housekeeper replied respectfully.
"Mm," Zhao Feng acknowledged. "From now on, the affairs of the mansion are entrusted to you. This is my wife. Her words are my words. Is there any money left in the mansion’s treasury?"
"The funds bestowed by the Great King are still sufficient," Lin Fu replied respectfully.
"Zhang Ming," Zhao Feng called out.
"My lord," Zhang Ming hurried over.
"Have the trusted aides garrison the mansion and stand guard as they would in a military camp," Zhao Feng commanded. Turning to the housekeeper, he added, "Lin Fu, prepare barracks for five hundred men within the mansion. Hire enough cooks and prepare sufficient food. If you’re short on staff, recruit more. If you’re short on funds, come to me."
"This servant accepts your orders," Lin Fu nodded respectfully.
Zhang Ming also moved to carry out his orders immediately.
"Now then, Qi’er, Ling’er," Zhao Feng said, his eyes twinkling as he looked at his children. "Would you two like to get familiar with the mansion? This is your home, after all."
"We want to stay with Daddy," the two little ones said, looking up at Zhao Feng with wide eyes.
"Why don’t you go explore for a bit? Tomorrow, Daddy will take you out to play. How does that sound?" Zhao Feng offered with a smile.
"Where will we go to play?" Hearing the word "play," the two toddlers, just over two years old, perked up with interest.
"Where would you like to go?" Zhao Feng asked, playing along.
"We want to ride horses! We want to eat candied haws! We want to eat lots and lots of things!" Zhao Qi exclaimed, using exaggerated hand gestures.
"Alright, Daddy promises you everything," Zhao Feng affirmed. "Housekeeper, find two maids to show them around the mansion. Let them play for a good while."
"This servant obeys," Lin Fu immediately responded with respect.
He then stepped forward and addressed the children deferentially, "Young Master, Young Miss, please follow this servant."
"Daddy! Mommy! We’re going to play!"
