Chapter 521 Why So Listless?
Chapter 521 Why So Listless?
The couple got up early the next day, and Lily obediently drove her Mercedes to work.
Although she felt that driving a four-wheeled vehicle meant more traffic and trouble finding a parking spot, in the end, it was a gesture of her husband's love, so she gladly accepted it.
Since the sister-in-law had taken the G-Wagon, leaving the family with only one car, Luis felt it was still a bit insufficient and thought it would be more practical to buy another one.
The next day, Ruth also rose bright and early, because today was the day the new property management company officially took over, her moment to shine. Even though her mother-in-law was still a bit tipsy from the night before, she was brimming with energy today.
"Mom, you look so beautiful!"
Luis, breaking his usual habit of sneaking touches while she changed and did her makeup, instead cooked a lavish breakfast, showing an unusual eagerness.
"Mom's getting old, what's all this talk about beauty!"
Ruth said this with a charming, slightly bashful smile, constantly texting with her girlfriends on WhatsApp.
She was especially pleased with her son-in-law's restraint today. His considerate affection made her, the mother-in-law, feel herself sinking deeper, falling helplessly in love as if in a trance.
"You're the most beautiful in my heart."
Luis whispered sweet nothings without a second thought, then accompanied her to Phase Two. Now, they didn't need to take the long way around to get there.
With the old wall torn down, residents on both sides found it much more convenient, so everyone was happy about the new property management company moving in. The practical benefit of a twenty percent reduction in the management fee was a nice bonus.
"Congratulations, Sister!"
"Sister, wishing your business great success!"
Besides her close circle of friends, many of Minda's connections also came to show their support. Daniel and Nancy got up early and rushed over as well, dressed vibrantly to lend their mother some face.
Minda gave a brief introduction. As a housewife, the mother-in-law wasn't really used to such occasions, so after a few simple words, she stepped down from the stage.
But it was enough for her. She had stolen the limelight, and from now on, she could practically do whatever she wanted around the community.
"What are you doing here?"
A discordant voice cut through the crowd. It was Aunt Kiara, from the old Phase One property management.
Aunt Kiara squeezed through the crowd, looking visibly awkward. "Just here to congratulate you on the opening!"
Minda looked wary, but Ruth, who had gotten wind of this beforehand, remained calm. Despite her own usual lack of friendliness towards her, she put on a little show of goodwill.
She stepped forward and said softly, "Well, thank you then!"
"Wishing you prosperity, Ruth! Wishing you prosperity!"
Everyone present was surprised, especially the Phase One residents, who were utterly shocked. It was no secret that Phase One mostly housed relocated families, often seen as low-class and troublesome.
To have survived and thrived here for so many years, Aunt Kiara wasn't without her tricks. As Leok's wife, plenty of people had suffered losses at her hands.
Seeing her now, acting so humble and eagerly fawning, many felt a sense of vindication and gained a whole new level of respect for Ruth.
At noon came the celebratory banquet. After all, it was a new company opening, so there had to be some festivities.
Although the staff were still the same bunch from Phase Two, a cosmetic change that drew some disdain, the mother-in-law, having had her moment in the sun, was absolutely delighted.
The banquet was a lively affair, enjoyed by all the guests.
Luis was the only one feeling down. He saw his mother-in-law was genuinely happy, no doubt about it, but the favorability meter above her head stubbornly remained at ninety-eight percent.
He had racked his brains and done so much, so why couldn't he bridge that final one percent?
According to the System's quest, the ultimate task for the mother-in-law required reaching ninety-nine percent. Just that one percent was missing, with no progress in sight.
Luis wasn't worried the quest would end upon completion, as side quests involving the two sisters had already branched off. But following the System's pattern, it was best to complete this main one first.
Still in the exploratory phase, he wasn't certain his reasoning was correct, but he decided to stick with the established pattern for now.
Ruth was walking on air these days, finally holding her head high after all these years.
"Sis, how much did this car cost?"
Back home after the banquet, riding in Nancy's car, Lily couldn't help but ask, eyeing the vehicle curiously.
"It's alright, not too much."
Since it was her brother-in-law who paid, the fairy-like sister-in-law always felt a twinge of guilt in front of her sister, the official wife.
"Brother-in-law, why are you so listless?"
Back home, Luis lay dejectedly on the sofa, smoking and pondering where he'd gone wrong. After all that effort, why couldn't he cross that one percent threshold?
Nancy came over and asked with concern; she rarely saw him so down.
Luis stretched and said, "Nothing, just feeling a bit sore all over."
Another weekend arrived, and this one's activities had been booked long in advance. Saturday morning, Luis drove to the Number One High School to pick up his sister-in-law.
"Where's your Siamese twin?"
His sister-in-law, youthful and lively, came bouncing over in her school uniform, radiating an amazing energy.
With her hair in pigtails, her chest trembled with every step she took, the swaying motion so captivating it was impossible to look away.
She cheerfully and openly got into her brother-in-law's Mercedes. While fastening her seatbelt, she chided him playfully, "Avery must have gone on ahead. She was so excited last night she couldn't sleep, told us to come over early today."
Today was Blanche's housewarming party. After drifting rootless in this city for so many years, the mother and daughter finally had a home of their own.
Lately, they'd been busy buying furniture and appliances, picking out new clothes, keeping Luis so occupied he hadn't had a proper chance to be with his two lovers.
Back home, the sister-in-law bounced off to choose her outfit for the day.
"Leah, let's shower together, save water."
"Go to hell, you pervy brother-in-law!"
After teasing her, with thoughts of her youthful, vibrant body, Luis figured since the house was empty during the day, this was a golden opportunity to get some advantage and see if he could complete a quest.
