Luis realized that his mother-in-law no longer cared about his father-in-law at all.

The affair from before was too far in the past; its impact had faded. What she truly cared about were the hardships she had endured over the years while raising her three daughters.

She certainly remembered who was to blame for that suffering. Expecting her to be magnanimous was simply unrealistic. Besides, in a situation like this, anyone who advises you to be the bigger person has some hidden grudge against you.

Just as Ruth was about to speak, Luis patted her thigh and joked, "Mom, why make things harder on yourself by fighting with money?"

Ruth was momentarily stunned, then chuckled and took the envelope back. However, her words remained sharp and cutting:

"That's true. When that Wood guy was in his prime, that bitch took all the perks. Now, he's suddenly acting like a stingy miser; it's almost unbelievable."

If she knew that Luis had lent his father-in-law fifty thousand dollars, she would probably tear the house apart.

As for why her attitude softened so quickly, it was because Luis had paid for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class himself, but told her it was a gift from her father-in-law, Arthur. Otherwise, Ruth wouldn't have given him such a pleasant look today.

Arthur breathed a huge sigh of relief and said, "Alright then, I'll bring the things over tomorrow. And don't bother buying those surveillance cameras and computers either; I have some you can use."

"Fine, for the sake of our son-in-law, I'll give you a chance to be a little attentive."

Arthur hailed a car and left first. Luis and his mother-in-law ate a few more bites before heading home together.

Along the way, she was in excellent spirits, her face flushed a captivating, drunken red that made her look incredibly alluring, and it made Luis's heart itch uncontrollably.

Unfortunately, they kept running into people the whole time, so there was no good opportunity to make a move. After arriving home, his mother-in-law was also radiating a strong sense of springtime passion.

To make things even more striking, his wife, Lily, who usually went to bed early, happened to come downstairs and ran right into them.

She smiled shyly and said, "Mom, you're back. My little aunt just finished giving me a massage and went to take a shower. You should get some rest too."

"Okay, you go to sleep early too, you little pregnant woman," Ruth said with affectionate fondness, then gave her son-in-law one last reluctant glance before heading back to her room.

Her period had just ended, which was undoubtedly when her springtime passions surged. At her age, with desires as fierce as wolves and tigers, she certainly longed to intimately join with her son-in-law. However, with so many family members around and prying eyes everywhere, Ruth didn't dare to be so blatant.

From tonight's events, Luis understood something.

His mother-in-law's ninety-eight percent favorability meter was missing that one final thread. He had taken a wrong turn trying to gain that one percent, and the key probably lay with that little stepmother.

As a woman, who wouldn't care about something like that? And with his mother-in-law's temper, forgetting was even more impossible.

His wife Lily had gone to work early in the morning. When Luis woke up, there was no one at home. He called to ask what Ariana and Leah, those two sisters, had talked about last night.

But it seemed there were no hard feelings between them now. After all, even close girlfriends would keep such secrets for each other, let alone sisters.

This was even more true among brothers; seeing multiple people or cucking someone was seen as impressive in a brother's eyes.

Luis was just thinking about how to make contact with that stepmother he had never met when his fairy-like sister-in-law, Nancy, called about the exact same thing:

"Brother-in-law, my dad's little mistress needs to be hospitalized for surgery. She has mild appendicitis. Don't you think we should go and visit her?"

Luis chuckled upon hearing this: "Where did you get this inside information?"

Nancy snorted disdainfully and said, "He got my mother-in-law to arrange the hospital stay."

Luis said in a joking tone, "If we go see her, and your mother, my mother-in-law, finds out, won't we be skinned alive by her?"

"Pfft, I heard mom accepted her congratulatory gift too, didn't she?"

Nancy said nonchalantly, "This resourceful guy has his own clever tricks. If you agree, I'll go talk to mom. I guarantee she'll agree too."

"Alright, if mom agrees, I have no objections."

Speaking of that stepmother, the fairy-like sister-in-law probably wasn't very familiar with her and their relationship wasn't necessarily good.

But as the eldest daughter, she had always been doted on by her father and had a particularly good relationship with Arthur. When she got married back then, it was a grand affair, so she would still give her old father some face.

Not long after, Nancy called back, laughing playfully: "Mom agreed! But she said the hospital is a bad place, and Lily can't go. If anyone goes, it'll just be the two of us."

Luis was a bit surprised: "She actually agreed?"

Nancy said proudly, "Of course! I said we'd go and show off a bit. You and I would drive there, all dressed up and glamorous."

"Then, I said I'd take a picture of her lying in that hospital bed to vent mom's anger for her. As soon as I said that, mom agreed."

"In mom's eyes, that woman's appendicitis is karma, so seeing her miserable state would be quite satisfying."

Well, well, the sister-in-law really had figured out the mother-in-law's temper. With a personality like hers, there was no way she'd refuse this kind of reasoning.

"They're going this afternoon to get the test results and check into the hospital. I'll come pick you up this afternoon, okay?"

With the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in her hands, Nancy was inseparable from it, wanting to show it off everywhere whenever she had the chance to drive.

"No need, just tell me what time. I have some things to take care of near there anyway."

Thinking about Hela's plump and alluring body, Luis felt a restless urge stir within him. Figuring out how to restart that quest line was definitely something worth investigating.

"Secretary Brook, you're looking great today."

"Sister Brook, why are you getting the takeout yourself? Just say the word and I'll have someone run and get it for you."

"Secretary Brook, your shoes today are really beautiful. Where did you buy them?"

People greeted her all along the way, their greetings filled with eagerness or flattery; every face she saw was smiling warmly.

Brook greeted everyone back with a friendly and approachable smile, but her steps were light and airy, a sense of pride swelling inevitably in her heart. She walked with a spring in her step, her head held high and chest out.

Ever since Hela had been officially appointed as the First Vice Dean, Brook, as her confidante, had naturally risen in status along with her.

Once the old dean retired, Hela becoming the top authority here was already a foregone conclusion, especially since Hela now held the real power in her hands.

And Brook, her trusted aide, had become the true power second only to the top, able to command wind and rain throughout the First Municipal Hospital.

Not to mention the ordinary doctors and attending physicians; even the directors of various departments and section heads would greet her warmly and flatter her when they saw her.

Her application for permanent staff status had been submitted, and approval was just a matter of time. These days, she was riding the crest of success, enjoying the height of springtime triumph.
