Chapter 907 New House?
Chapter 907 New House?
The old Wood family house had been fully renovated. The ground floor unit was now a neat two-bedroom, one-living-room layout. After removing the old staircase and storage room, the space was much brighter.
"I never realized the first floor of Sister Lily's house was so spacious!"
Maria exclaimed in amazement. Meanwhile, Yana was directing the property staff as they moved her belongings in.
Her own three-bedroom unit had been showing its age. When she'd first renovated, she'd cut every corner possible. As she put it, it was already a miracle it had held up this long.
Now she'd decided to give it a proper renovation, one that would last her until the end of her days, with no worries afterward.
The floor plan was similar. She'd visited Minda's home and Blanche and Avery's new place for inspiration.
After discussing it with her daughter Maria, she designed her own renovation plans, avoiding all the usual contractor pitfalls.
Though Arthur had switched careers, his years of good reputation still carried weight. One phone call from him and he could get as many skilled workers as needed.
As for materials, Arthur was a complete expert, cement, sand, timber, tiles, wiring, plumbing, he knew it all.
After reviewing the designs, he consulted with a few contractors and drew up a detailed materials list.
Every material had to match his specifications. When the supplies arrived, he personally inspected them before approving delivery.
With such a seasoned pro handling things, Yana had little to worry about. She'd just stay here temporarily until her own place was ready.
Over at the old house, workers had already gutted most of the old fixtures and hauled away the debris. The new crew would move in according to schedule, along with the materials.
"Mom, I'm heading to the pool!"
Maria answered a call from a classmate and hurried off.
Yana smiled warmly as she organized the household items. There weren't many, but since they'd be staying for a while, she couldn't be too careless.
The two upstairs units, the one they'd had and the one bought from Old Bard, were both spacious one-bedrooms. No major demolition was needed this time.
They just removed the old storage room and small study, opening up a cozy little living room.
The property staff had just dropped off the moving boxes for Eloise and Serena, who would be staying here now.
Though they'd grown used to the comforts of the villa, it still felt like living under someone else's roof. Even though no one complained, it was awkward.
Little things, like not knowing where to put cups, made them uneasy. It was better to move out.
"Yes, yes, our enrollment hasn't started yet!"
Serena answered a call from a parent inquiring about registration.
Seeing her phone ringing off the hook, Eloise said gently, "Serena, you should head to work. There's not much left here, I'll have it sorted in no time. We can go buy some pots and pans tonight."
"Alright, thanks, sis-in-law. I'll leave this to you."
Serena nodded and left.
Eloise hummed a tune as she organized. Housework was her natural element, she did it with ease and grace.
Even though she'd moved out, it was still the same neighborhood. Her sister Ruth had already told her she'd still be in charge of the villa.
The now-leisurely matriarch was busy enjoying life, taking short trips with her group of lady friends, playing cards in her spare time.
After a lifetime of hard work, she deserved a break. Eloise, being more reserved and homebound, was perfectly fine with this arrangement.
The villa had modern appliances that made cleaning easy. Washing clothes and linens was a breeze.
For her, life was wonderful and fulfilling. Being separated from her husband had spared her his harsh words. Every day felt carefree and at ease.
She still had keys to the villa and could come and go as she pleased.
With Lily pregnant and unable to do much housework, Eloise was happy to care for her niece, especially since she felt both guilt and sympathy for her.
Every day, she'd browse recipes on her phone, learning new dishes.
She'd visit the market to pick out fresh seafood, things she'd never dreamed of before.
By the time Lily got home from work, a full day's worth of carefully prepared dishes and nourishing soups would be waiting for her. Everyone felt at ease knowing Eloise was looking after things.
The biggest excitement lately was the completion and housewarming of Arthur's new home in the countryside.
In this progressive village, the three Wood sisters were entitled to their own residential land, something that would be unheard of in many places.
Residential land rights, sometimes called "ding rights," are traditionally only granted to male heirs. But in this village, dominated by the Wood family, even daughters could get land, a rare exception.
With a serious rural population decline, building multi-story homes was unnecessary. Using materials he'd stored in his warehouse, Arthur designed a single-story courtyard-style house.
With a two-acre footprint, the space was generously proportioned. A single-story home was actually more comfortable.
The high concrete walls looked ordinary from the outside, topped with some rusty iron mesh, also leftover from storage.
The main gate was electric, controlled by remote for cars. A smaller gate, usually kept open, allowed motorcycles and people to pass through.
The design was thoughtful, not a mansion, but comfortable and pleasant to look at.
At the center of the spacious courtyard was a traditional four-sided single-story structure with a classic "four waters return to gold" design, exuding rustic charm.
A three-point plot of land was reserved for the old lady's garden, any more would be too much for her. The rest was paved with sturdy bricks for easy cleaning and parking.
The old lady initially grumbled that the garden was too small. Arthur, ever resourceful, said the feng shui master had advised against more, and she dropped it.
Though it was a single-story, it was far from modest. The roof featured a pavilion, swings, and other leisure amenities.
The central hall was spacious and bright, with ancestral tablets on display, an impressive sight. The solid wood sofas were comfortable too.
To the left was the old lady's bedroom; to the right, Arthur and his wife's. Extending outward, beyond the kitchen and dining room in the back, were eight generously sized rooms.
Arthur's clear intent, to accommodate a large family, was obvious.
The old house was demolished and gone. The vacant plot was enclosed and turned into a simple ecological fish pond with some potted plants.
A couple of days early, Blossom Media's team had arrived. Nancy, Chloe, and Deewa were filming all over the place.
The theme of demolishing old rural houses and rebuilding them was popular online too. By the time the old house was gone and debris cleared, Blossom Media had already been established.
Deewa had specifically hired a local girl from the village when she was recruiting.
She didn't need to clock in or sit at an office, her daily task was to film the construction progress and document how the workers were doing their jobs.
Now that the project was nearly wrapped up and ready for editing, the three main hosts had finally arrived for the final shoot.
After finishing her segment, Chloe couldn't help but say, "Nancy, your dad has great taste."
"Of course. His designs have always been ahead of their time."
Nancy said proudly.
Aside from a few essential items, about eighty percent of the materials used in this house were things that had been sitting in storage for years, things that couldn't be sold but were a shame to throw away.
Though Arthur was getting on in years, his practical design sense was remarkable.
Most single-story houses have a uniform, plain appearance. At best, the exterior walls are plastered; at worst, the red bricks are left bare.
But this new house was fully tiled on the outside. The most interesting part was that the tiles weren't all the same color or part of any coordinated palette.
They were all leftover stock, mismatched sizes, colors, patterns, and textures.
This was the one design Arthur had done entirely by hand. He spent three days and nights sorting through the mountain of tiles, categorizing them by color and pattern.
Then, he arranged them in a gradient across the exterior walls. The resulting look was so avant-garde that it would turn heads even in the city, let alone the countryside.
The whole team was amazed. This spacious courtyard house was far more stylish than so-called luxury mansions.
The rock garden, the ecological fish pond materials, the swings, the pavilion, everything came from years of accumulated leftovers. Who knows how much miscellaneous stuff Arthur had stashed away?
Now it had all been turned into treasure. Arthur's experience and expertise were on full display, and the house drew constant praise.
In front of the hall, with its "four waters return to gold" design, there was a stone tea table and chairs, unique and elegant. The kind of thing that's expensive to buy but hard to sell.
On a beautiful, much-anticipated weekend, the three poor little girls were dragged into hard labor.
Piles of invitations were stacked high. Everyone listed the names of the guests they wanted to invite, and the girls had to hand-write each one.
Their handwriting was neat and pretty, unlike Luis's, which looked like a dog's paw prints. Sending those out would be embarrassing.
