Chapter 257 – Ruins in Tropical Regions Part 2

“Huh? There’s something drawn here, too…”

As Batz approached the altar, he noticed something.

Similar to the picture he had shown the knight, it was an old-fashioned mural.

“What’s drawn here?”

Leonard told him to go closer to the wall.

Then he said,

“Ah… it looks like a soul is coming out of the coffin and flying into this ruin-like place. After that, I don’t know what happens, but another man and woman enter the ruins, and then it ends.”

It was a vague explanation, but it was the only way to describe it.

“The woman might be an elf. She’s wearing what looks like their traditional clothing.”

Something that looked like a soul was floating out of the coffin and into the ruins where the three of them were standing.

Eventually, a man and a woman followed the souls.

But Batz had forgotten something.

There weren’t supposed to be any elves on this continent. So why were there elves in the mural?

“Tigre. Do you understand what he’s saying?”

“I don’t know. Either Batz is suffering from the heat or something is wrong with the murals in these ruins. I’m betting on the former.”

After being scolded, Batz crossed his arms and looked uncomfortable.

Then he sighed deeply and started walking.

“All right, all right! It doesn’t seem to mean much anyway, so I’ll just ignore it!”

His voice sounded sulky, but the two exhausted men couldn’t help but smile at his childish attitude.

It was a trivial exchange, but they couldn’t help smiling.

“Hey! You guys, that looks like an altar!”

Batz said bluntly. They had finally arrived at their destination: the altar of bestowal and descent.

Unlike the ruins they had seen so far, the stones here looked brand new.

Why was that? The three of them stepped inside, curious.

“This is strange. This must be an ancient place, right?”

“Yeah, that’s what Elena told me, but then there’s something odd about these stone pavements.”

Like the entrance, the ceiling was high and the pillars imposing, but they had a glossy finish.

This was because the polished stone gave off a pale blue hue.

Also, strangely, the temperature in this space was comfortable.

The sweat from earlier had dried, and they felt more composed.

The three of them scanned their surroundings carefully as they made their way further into the building boldly.

Then they noticed it:

A huge mural painted on the ceiling above what appears to be an altar.

“Hey, hey, hey! They even added color! Are they giving this place special treatment?”

“…But I feel like I’ve seen that woman in the painting before.”

Batz and Leonard looked at each other and crossed their arms in thought.

Meanwhile, Tigre seemed to have noticed the woman in the painting.

“Could that woman be…”

He whispered.

What kind of painting was it? It was similar to the one he had seen in the ruins before coming to the altar.

In that painting, a woman was kneeling and looking up at the sky.

A little distance away, a woman who appeared to be a goddess was looking down from the sky.

The difference from the previous painting was that the goddess was dropping some kind of fruit to the woman on her knees.

The fruit looked like a bright red ripple but was somehow different.

None of them recognized the fruit, but they felt a sense of déjà vu toward the woman receiving it.

Tigre was the first to notice.

“Doesn’t she look like the Second Princess?”

The woman on her knees had brown hair.

It was too early to say for sure that it was Olivia, but there was decisive evidence:

“Not only is it the color of her hair, but also the tree roots at her feet. They seem to be connected to that woman.”

“That’s right! She looks like the Second Princess.”

Leonard nodded in agreement, and Batz nodded beside him.

“Well, even if you say so, there shouldn’t be a painting of the Second Princess.”

“That’s true, but I feel a sense of familiarity. Let’s tell Ain-sama when we return home.”

“However, it’s a place with a nice atmosphere. If we spread the word that we found it here, something unexpected might happen.”

The two agreed with Tigre’s last words.

Then, they forgot about the painting and moved on to their reconnaissance.

“I don’t know. It’s not even depicted in the paintings.”

“Huh, it’s not recorded in the Ishtalika documents either?”

“Warren-sama said so, so I’m sure it’s true. But, to avoid being exposed as liars, they basically don’t reveal the eggs either…”

“That’s probably best. Those dragon worshippers might know what the eggs look like.”

There wasn’t much tension, but they were serious about their work.

The three of them checked every corner of the altar, occasionally taking out a bundle of paper from their pockets and writing with a pen.

Then, they continued to check their surroundings for about ten minutes.

Leonard drew a picture of the altar while Batz tapped the pillars to check their texture.

Finally, Tigre approached the altar and touched it.

“Hmmm… This place has a solemn, well-made structure.”

At that moment,

His vision suddenly blurred, and a voice echoed in his head:

“The bond that connects the two of you… I want you to cherish it.”

“Yes, I will do whatever I can.”

Suddenly, he heard a faint female voice.

What happened? Confused, he let go of the altar and turned around.

His face was frozen with surprise.

“Wh-What’s wrong, Tigre?”

“Leonard? What was that just now…?”

“Just now? You mean what I’m writing? If so, I’m just drawing the altar.”

Leonard was startled by Tigre’s sudden movement when he turned around.

He widened his eyes and showed Leonard the bundle of paper.

“What was that voice just now?”

“Voice? Oh, you mean Batz was being noisy…”

“Hey! Why are you blaming me?”

…He couldn’t understand.

What was that sound he had just heard? Was it because he touched the altar?

Unable to find an answer, he touched the altar again.

“…No, it’s nothing. I guess I was just tired.”

He repeatedly touched it as if stroking it, but he couldn’t hear any voices.

He must have been tired. He laughed self-deprecatingly and turned around.

A little while later, the three of them left this mysterious space.

As soon as they left the room with the altar, they were overcome by the heat. However, they couldn’t just go home.

They met up with the knights along the way and prepared to return home.

They ate a light meal and made their way home, sighing as they had on the way there.

By the next evening, they had returned to the port town of Roundheart, marking the end of Batz and Leonard’s first business trip. They spent several days resting in a comfortable bed and cozy room, recovering from their fatigue.

Though it was still work, they enjoyed spending time together as friends and were able to complete their reconnaissance mission to their satisfaction.
