Chapter 311 – Before Heading Back

A full day has passed since Chris’ confession.

After finishing his work in the capital, Ain was returning to Strohm.

Many people saw him off, but just before that, he visited Warren’s office.

A stack of papers and the scent of ink.

Ain stood before the large desk in the back.

Just minutes earlier, the two had sat down at that desk and finished their discussion.

Regarding the recent commotion, Krone had also been present, though she had already left. She had left the room earlier to prepare for her departure.

“I hear you received a passionate confession from Chris-dono…”

Warren said, glancing over the documents.

“…I’d like to ask where you heard this.”

“It seems that she was making sure no one was around, but a servant who happened to pass by saw it. They came to report it to me secretly.”

“I see. Well, I suppose that can’t be helped.”

“After all these years of being kept in suspense… I must say, I feel something close to overwhelming emotion.”

Thud, thud.

After gathering the documents and placing them on the desk, Warren lowered his brows, revealing eyes burning with intensity.

Morning sunlight seeped through the gaps in the curtains like a halo.

“The bloodline we saw off in the former capital that day will be reunited. I feel a joy beyond words.”

Warren’s words were still too optimistic.

“May the Royal Family, who inherited the Silver, enjoy eternal glory.”

“I was confused about many things, though.”

“I can make a rough guess, but it seems Ain-sama is fixated on one mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“Yes. Following so-called success stories isn’t a mistake. However, to avoid repeating failures, learning from examples of failure is a better approach. That way, you won’t fail any worse.”

Ain nodded silently.

“If there are those who fell far short of Ain-sama’s ideals, then as long as you take great care not to become like them, there should be no problem.”

Warren spoke, implicitly referring to Heim.

Ain’s lips curved slightly as he nodded, acknowledging that perspective.

“Regarding the matter with Chris-dono, please inform His Majesty of it eventually.”

“Huh? You don’t want me to tell him right away that this happened?”

“There’s no need to look so puzzled. After all, I didn’t witness it myself.”

“…I see. So you’re leaving it to us, then?”

“Well, now, what is this about?”

“It’s helpful. It feels like you’re watching over us.”

Ain slowly checked his wristwatch. It was about time.

In a quiet voice, he said, “Thank you,” to Warren, then turned to leave.

“Ain-sama.”

Warren’s voice reached his back, slightly stiff in tone.

“We will hunt the Red Dragon. The core we obtain will become a new Red Jade of the Earth, destined for the hands of your future heir.”

“That’s good news. If we can get the core without any casualties, that’d be a huge win.”

“Quite so. And should the Black Dragon be born as legend foretells…”

Ain could see his expression gradually soften and his voice grow lighter.

“It would be best if you consumed it. The World Tree of Gluttony could then make it its own power.”

Ain stopped abruptly.

Without turning back, he blinked repeatedly, staring at the door.

“I have no intention of asking you to fight, Ain-sama. Naturally, His Majesty and I would try to stop you, but we lack the means to do so. Primarily in terms of combat strength—”

“I don’t know. Just in case, I might not act to spare my important people any worry.”

“That won’t happen. Crown Prince Ain would throw himself into danger to protect his loved ones if they were in harm’s way.”

Unable to counter, Ain scratched his temple with a wry smile.

“That’s why I thought I should tell you now. Not half-heartedly, like with the Sea Dragon. I want you to obtain all the power the Black Dragon possesses. That is my sole wish.”

“Why bring this up so suddenly?”

“His Majesty was concerned. He was concerned about the matter of the Divine Abduction Dungeon.”

“… “

“Then I reasoned that if you were to gain power surpassing the Divine Abduction Dungeon itself, that would eliminate any possibility of it happening. Hahahaha!”

A deep, resonant laugh echoed.

Ain clutched his head with both hands, shaking in regret for causing his grandfather such worry.

“Ah, ahh… I see. That might actually be a good idea.”

With a final laugh, he left Warren’s office.

“Still, if it follows the legend, he will gain formidable power. Is there any being capable of standing against him?”

If so, it would have to be a god.

Warren gazed out the window at the town below the castle, deep in thought.
