Chapter 313 – The Sea Dragon’s Fang and His Life Story
Less than two days later, Batz and Leonard crossed the sea. Tigre, who had just returned from the capital, was with them, and the three of them were so lively that Ain found himself feeling envious.
Then, three days later… Ain was startled by a letter that arrived from the capital.
In Ain’s private room at the Strohm mansion.
“The city’s restoration process is moving fast…”
It was a report about the restoration of the frontier city of Klyphoth.
As he read through it, it became clear just how seriously Warren had begun moving.
“Dozens of men and women have been apprehended, and interrogations are currently underway, eh… That’s way too fast.”
Further reading mentioned dispatching forces to the region west of the continent where the Huorn Group’s headquarters were located, as Mouton had said.
However, the report stated that the poor roads were making the search of the surrounding area difficult.
Compared to his own actions in Strohm, though, the far more sophisticated movements made Ain curl his lip in a smirk. “Still not good enough.”
Soon enough, a report would arrive from the Heim Autonomous Region as well.
“—Ain? I heard a report arrived from Warren-sama…”
Krone knocked on the door and stepped into Ain’s room.
“Ah, yeah. I was just looking it over.”
“Perfect timing. May I join you?”
“Of course.”
As she sat down beside him, Krone’s usual floral scent mingled with the aroma of tea. She must have just finished breakfast, Ain thought, distracted by Krone sitting next to him.
As they moved closer naturally, their thighs touching, she peered at the letter in his hands.
“Wow, things moved faster than I imagined.”
Warren commanded more forces than Strohm did. Though Ain had the Magic Stone Group and Arche nearby, he still didn’t feel he could match Warren when it came to maneuvering large forces.
After the two exchanged a wry smile, Krone suddenly gasped, “Ah!” as she remembered something.
“Mouton-dono should be arriving shortly. I’ll have him shown to the reception room. Can I leave the rest to you?”
“Mm. Understood.”
As she left, Krone kissed Ain’s cheek, leaving him in high spirits.
Soon after, Ain rose to his feet, following her example.
“I’d better take that ridiculously huge fang with me.”
He glanced at the wooden box containing El’s shed fang. One had already been presented to the royal capital, to Sylvird.
The purpose of the remaining fang was decided. That was precisely why Mouton had been summoned to Strohm.
◇ ◇ ◇ ◇
Mouton was led into the reception room, where he was astonished. He was so astonished that he was left speechless.
He narrowed his eyes and, using a smooth fabric glove he’d taken from his pocket, traced the surface of the fang.
“This… isn’t something a mere monster could produce.”
“Well, it is a sea dragon’s fang.”
“No, that’s not what I mean. If handled poorly, it could spawn a monster even stronger than His Highness’s sword.”
Just how much had the twins grown? Ain wondered. If Mouton spoke of it in such terms, then the twins must have already surpassed the sea dragon that Ain had slain. Could they be approaching the strength of a dragon-type Demon Lord?
The twins were fed an abundance of magic stones funded by the national treasury and Katima’s personal wealth.
Hence, one of the fangs had been presented.
“I can make a great sword. Or a sword of ordinary size. But if I were to recommend something, it would mean another national treasure. Shouldn’t we tell His Majesty?”
“…I’ve already informed him, so I think it’s fine.”
“Ha! Fine by me! Just give me a few days. I’ll rush and make it!”
“You can make it that fast?”
“I get paid from the national treasury, you know. I upgrade to the latest Ist-made forge every year! Hahahaha!”
The knights’ combat strength increased, which was all good news. It seemed they were building a good relationship, the best possible outcome.
Mouton closed the wooden box lid and stood up to leave the mansion.
“By the way, I heard the knife you gave us is working out great. The head chefs mentioned it to me, and I heard that from Martha-san.”
“Well, that’s only natural! After all, I forged it myself!”
Mouton’s words carried conviction, backed by proven skill.
“Ah, well, it’s a knife from my homeland, you see. It’s called a Japanese kitchen knife. I only remember how to forge them. I don’t even remember where that homeland was anymore!”
“—Huh?”
What did he just say? Ain was startled by the words echoing within the faint memories lingering in his mind.
“Also, this was ages ago. I heard someone died from a knife I made. It was a stupid way to go, and the fact that a blade meant for cooking took a life hit me hard. So I stopped making those knives for a while.”
“Ah, yes.”
“I stepped away from blacksmithing for a while. Well, somehow I ended up back at it. Other than that? Honestly, I don’t remember a thing. Not that it bothers me, so don’t worry about it! Gahahahaha… Guh… Whew… Cough…”
Watching Mouton cough from laughing too hard, Ain felt a strange connection.
He felt all sorts of strange connections.
“Whew, I thought I was gonna die… Anyway, once it’s done, I’ll have the castle knights send it over. See ya!”
“H-hold on! Mouton-san!”
Ignoring Ain’s attempt to stop him, Mouton shouldered the wooden box containing El’s fang and left the parlor.
Ain extended his arm to stop Mouton, but grasped at air several times before letting his arm fall limply.
He hadn’t intended to ask Mouton anything. He had tried to stop Mouton on a whim.
After all, Mouton had told him he remembered nothing at all. Ain believed him entirely due to Mouton’s character.
