Chapter 315 – Where Were They Taken?
The former Royal Guard of the Heim Kingdom was greatly offended by Tigre’s words. He addressed Sylvird as “Your Majesty” and summoned the knights of Ishtalika as if they were his dependable subordinates rather than the Royal Guard.
Tigre thought this would allow him to capture Camilla and calm things down.
The knights of Ishtalika should have demonstrated their strength immediately.
“The legacy she left behind is proving quite useful, you see.”
Tigre was distracted by Camilla, who flung a vulgar smile around. As he wondered where her composure came from, the knights who had rushed in were blown back against the wall.
For just an instant, the dull clang of metal striking metal echoed.
“Wh-what the…?”
What had they done? Tigre scanned the area. His gaze fell upon two knights. They were the ones who had drawn their swords at Camilla’s command.
Unseen swords had been swung down, slicing through the armor of the Ishtalika knights and sending them crashing against the wall.
Suddenly, the matter of the mysterious miasma-shrouded creatures flashed through Tigre’s mind.
Although he could tell no miasma was leaking now, he couldn’t help but question whether these two knights, who hadn’t uttered a single word, were even ordinary humans. The only people Tigre knew who could defeat an Ishtalika knight at such blinding speed were Logas and Grint.
(Is this the power… the very power that controlled my brother, my father… and even Logas and the others…!?)
Tigre hadn’t been on the battlefield himself; he had only heard the story. He learned of King Ralph of Heim and his brother Layfon’s horribly changed forms from Ain and felt grateful that they had been put out of their misery.
But now wasn’t the time to ponder its true nature.
“Kuh… I don’t have time to think!”
From outside the room, the sound of reinforcements began to echo immediately.
To escape, Tigre clicked his tongue and started to run.
“Your Highness! You must come with us for now!”
“Come on! This way!”
But Tigre’s feet halted when a knight forcibly seized his shoulder, preventing him from leaving the room.
“Stop it! I don’t have any long-held ambitions like you do.”
Then, Camilla cut him off sharply.
“…Even if Your Highness doesn’t have them now, we do. We seek revenge for my husband’s unfulfilled wishes and for every ounce of pain Grint endured. Once all is accomplished, the restoration of the great Heim.”
It was an audacious wish, setting aside the royal Tigre. Yet, judging whether her words were true or false was easy, even through her bloodshot eyes.
The royal guards seized Tigre’s arms and led him toward the window.
“No! Both Father and I were mistaken! It wasn’t just about provoking Ishtalika. I doubt we were ever truly sincere with our people. The current situation is punishment for that very reason, and the people are satisfied with the current rule. For us to wish for the revival of Heim now—”
“Your Highness, here is the medicine from Neusch-dono. You seem quite agitated.”
[T/N: Changed “Noish” to “Neusch.”]
“Ah! My apologies, Your Highness.”
“Wait! Neusch?! So you are indeed aligned with those dragon worshippers—”
Warren’s suspicions were confirmed.
The connection between Neusch, the former director of the Ancient Biological Research Institute, and Camilla was now undeniable.
Soon, a royal guard held a sweet-smelling white cloth close to Tigre’s face. From Camilla’s mention of “medicine,” he guessed it was something to induce unconsciousness.
“You…! So it was you! You were working with the dragon worshippers, weren’t you!?”
He shouted loudly on purpose, hoping someone would hear the clue he had discovered.
Someone, please remember this cry. Tigre lost consciousness with that wish.
This bold crime, targeting a specific individual, exploited a gap in security.
Tigre’s shout alerted the mansion’s staff, prompting them to deploy new security measures immediately.
Soon, a swift horse delivered the news that Tigre had been kidnapped to Batz and Leonard, who had arrived in Birdland.
It was just past six in the morning.
Though it was early, the two had gathered in one room to share information when it happened.
“Haaaaaah?! Tigre was kidnapped?!”
The sender was Elena August.
Batz, who had been casually skimming the contents, sat down in front of Leonard and shouted.
“…C-Cough… Cough… Hey, Batz! What the hell—”
Leonard spewed out his half-drunk tea.
“Just read it, damn it! Come on! It’s a letter from Ain’s mother-in-law!”
“Don’t beat around the bush! But why would Elena-dono write such a letter?”
“What do you mean? Do you think I lied? Just read it already.”
The letter stated that Camilla was the main culprit and confirmed the connection to dragon worship. The news that Tigre had been kidnapped and that the Knights of Ishtalika had been easily defeated heightened the tension between the two.
“Hard to believe. Honestly, I heard Heim’s knights weren’t that formidable.”
“I didn’t see it myself, so I don’t know. But, you know, the forces during the Heim War…the Red Foxes, right? They made absolute hell. Could they have retained some of that shady power?”
“Yeah, I don’t know the details, but it’s beyond shady. Maybe His Highness and the others understand the true nature of it.”
“Well, it’s not information we lowly grunts should be hearing.”
“Hah, ironic, isn’t it? Given our noble status, we currently hold a seat among the commanders.”
“Even so, we’re still lowly grunts. We can compromise on not hearing certain things, but the real question is what to do about Tigre.”
“…We should save him.”
Batz stared wide-eyed at Leonard, who spoke with obvious reluctance. Then, he let out a huge sigh, scratched his temple, and gave a wry smile.
“Of course we should. He’s our friend.”
“B-but… even though I said it myself, I can’t let personal feelings interfere with the job.”
“Don’t be an idiot. This is a rescue mission for the Duke of Heim, a distinguished noble. After that—”
“I see. The mastermind was nearby. So, if we capture the mastermind, we can save Tigre, too?”
Batz chuckled softly and nodded.
He settled deeper into the sofa, spreading his arms wide and resting them on the armrests.
“So, the question is what we do next.”
“First, we contact the home country. Elena-dono has probably already done so, but we should do so urgently as well.”
“Yeah, that’s a reasonable course.”
“Next, we need to assemble a force to pursue Camilla and the former Heim Knights who left.”
Leonard finished speaking and pulled a bundle of papers from his pocket. His pen glided smoothly across the paper.
“The letter mentioned the direction they fled.”
“Which direction from the port town of Roundheart?”
“Northwest, apparently. Right, yeah. I heard it’s towards those ruins we visited before.”
“Toward those ruins? Is there something there?”
“No clue. Maybe a hideout or something?”
Either way, they had no choice but to send pursuers.
After that, the two left the room, summoned the commanders of the other units, and headed to a meeting.
