Side Chapter 4 – Katima’s Diary

Continental Calendar — The 4th Month, Day 11

My brother vanished. He just disappeared, either accompanied by Celes or urged by her.

Even before the unveiling, a proper investigation team was assembled, but after several days, there was still no progress.

“Onii-sama. Why did you vanish?”

I felt as if my heart were being torn apart.

Continental Calendar — The 4th Month, Day 23

The search for my vanished brother and Celes was called off.

It was too soon. Mother pleaded tearfully with Father, but he only bowed his head, his face etched with pain.

Olivia looked sad, too. Chris nearly took her own life trying to take responsibility. The turmoil continued… I felt that someone had to change the atmosphere.

Continental Calendar — The 4th Month, Day 29:

Today, I made my first major mistake. While conducting research, which is also a hobby of mine, I accidentally caused an explosion by incorrectly mixing chemicals.

I worried everyone. What was I thinking at a time like this? I reflected on it, but Father and Martha just laughed it off.

They were apparently relieved that I was unharmed and amused by the soot pattern on my cheek.

I feel like I understood something, just a little bit.

Continent Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 6

The atmosphere within the castle was gradually calming down. But everyone’s expressions remained dark.

Chris, who helped me with my research, seemed dazed. During an experiment in the courtyard, she spilled the dye I had brought and deftly poured it over her head.

What on earth was she doing? Suddenly, I found myself laughing out loud.

Drawn by my laughter, Olivia and Martha came over and started laughing too.

When was the last time we all laughed together like this?

Continent Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 17

I couldn’t forget the last time we all laughed together.

I ended up turning to the books in the library, wondering what to do. Of course, there was no research that could make everyone laugh. I lost count of how many times I sighed.

Continent Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 20

I slowly made my way to the fairy tale section of the library. I didn’t expect to find the perfect answer buried there.

But I discovered something.

“What is this book?” Its title was ‘The Life of a Certain Jester.’

Just another common, old tale. Thinking that, I immersed myself in the book that night and didn’t stop until the morning sun rose.

Continental Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 21

The jester had no name. Yet he was a master at making people laugh and brightening even the darkest places.

This was it. No, he must be the presence the castle needed. After finishing the book, I felt as if scales had fallen from my eyes. As I opened the window to gaze at the sunrise, I sensed that something was changing.

Continental Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 22

My individuality remained undefined. What should I do? I’ve never acted this foolishly before.

Continental Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 23:

I am a Cait Sith. I am a Cait Sith who has reverted to my ancestral form. Could someone please tell me how a Cait Sith was supposed to be amusing?

Because of this, I couldn’t immerse myself in my research. Please tell me what I should do and what would be best.

Continental Calendar — The 5th Month, Day 24

I’ve realized one thing: I’m a researcher… in training.

Shouldn’t I just stick with this path?

Sigh… If I had known it would turn out like this, maybe I should have focused on studying comedy.

“Onii-sama, Katima resents you, you know.”

Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day 3

Today, Chris failed again.

She’s still very much an airhead—a charming woman who perfectly fits the description of a complete klutz.

Her failure livened things up. Livened things up… Right, I should do that too.

After revisiting The Life of a Certain Jester for the first time in ages, I told Martha:

“Prepare a lab coat for me-nya!” Startled by my tone, she hurriedly agreed and went to place the order.

Continent Calendar — The 6th Month, Day 5

The lab coat arrived in two days. Hmm, it feels really comfortable. But maybe it’s a bit plain.

Since it was ready, I tried adding some jewelry. It brought out my personality, which made me happy.

After taking several deep breaths, I called out to Chris in a loud voice.

“Chris! I’m doing research again today, so help me out!” I said.

Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day 28

The cat-like meow at the end might have been shocking. But surprisingly, I found myself rather fond of it.

The people around me seemed to get used to it, and the castle knights started chatting with me more casually than before.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 11

I started deliberately performing flashy experiments. Naturally, there were many failures and frequent commotions.

The hardest part was that my allowance was cut accordingly. Ah, my favorite snacks were running low.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 12

I didn’t stop conducting flashy experiments. Instead, I started conducting them in ways that involved the people around me.

I stirred things up just enough to keep everyone somewhat uncomfortable, and I thanked those who helped me profusely.

Then, seeing Martha chase after me, I took off running like a hare escaping a hound.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 16

The castle has become livelier. But what about Martha’s stamina?

I often get caught quickly, so lately, I’vea been making sure to secure an escape route before causing a ruckus.

Continental Calendar — The 8th Month, Day 3

I finally did it! I succeeded in escaping Martha without hiding.

I’m not sure if a princess should feel this sense of accomplishment, but why not?

Every time someone called out, “You’re at it again,” I was happy to see the servants’ faces light up with genuine smiles.

Sometimes Father chased after me to scold me, and sometimes Mother cheered me on.

Yes, I must be close to achieving my goal. That night, I cried while bathing.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar — XXth Month, XXth Day

Olivia’s marriage for Ishtalika has been arranged.

Although I’ve grown accustomed to this new behavior, more than half of which now feels natural rather than forced, this news comes as a surprise.

As royalty, however, I understand that such duties and necessities exist.

…Whether reason accompanies them is another matter entirely.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar — The 4th Month, Day 5

A letter arrived from Olivia, who got married in Heim.

She wrote that she was heartbroken over how badly my nephew, Ain, was being treated.

Father tried to set sail. Unlike usual, Mother showed no sign of stopping him. Lloyd and Warren, along with many other knights, desperately tried to persuade him.

Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day 30

A letter arrived concerning my nephew, Ain.

Would Father be in a foul mood again today? I was pondering what mischief I might stir up when I overheard the news:

Apparently, His Majesty was in a cheerful mood.

I heard that Ain had acquired the skill “Gift of Training,” and that the King’s face had softened at the news of his hardworking grandson. Though bound by a secret pact, I secretly hoped that if Olivia were to divorce and return home, Ain might become Crown Prince.

Continental Calendar — The 9th Month, Day 26

One night, after finishing my research, I wandered the castle.

The butler’s office was unusually lively, so I opened the door, wondering if there was a problem.

“What are you all doing at this hour?”

Then, I saw the butlers frantically hide something. What could they be hiding? As I pondered this, I noticed Chris was in the room.

When I pressed them, they said they were going to pick up Olivia. I understood—that child’s patience had finally reached its limit.

I left the room and ordered a passing guard knight. “Tomorrow, when Chris returns to the castle, report who she brought with her.”

Continental Calendar — The 9th Month, Day 27

The guard I ordered went secretly.

Sure enough, Olivia had brought a boy with her. I chuckled softly, hoping the castle would become lively again.

Continental Calendar — The 9th Month, Day 29

“What’s with that nephew of mine-nya? Does he think I’m a cat or something-nya?”

Continental Calendar — The 10th Month, Day 1

I thought Heim was an idiot. Lacking wisdom was one thing, but they showed no evolution for a creature with so-called intelligence.

They let go of someone they should never have let go. One could argue that they chose the best option for us: the Ishtalika.

Continental Calendar — The 10th Month, Day 4

Over the past week, the atmosphere of the castle has completely changed.

Ain still seems stiff, but he’s clever like Olivia.

Surely, everyone can live happily again, just like before-nya.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 3

This clumsy elf should learn to be more honest about her feelings-nya.

She might not realize it herself, but it’s obvious to anyone watching.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 9

I think Ist is a good town. It really stimulates my intellectual curiosity. Today, I even got to talk with Oz, a renowned researcher.

Though there was some concerning talk about Ain’s future, it seems the matter with the red fox is slowly progressing, which is the best news.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 10

I think Dill is a good kid. He doesn’t seem annoyed to be with me, and he seems to enjoy it. That makes me happy, too.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 16

Even though I returned ahead of everyone else, I heard about the commotion that Ain and Chris caused.

It’s obvious the other party was in the wrong. It’s striking how pleased Warren was that they could be purged.

It’s only natural that Krone achieved results that no other candidate could match, securing the position of Ain’s assistant, his aide.

If things keep up like this, that clumsy elf is going to get left behind, I feel-nya.

But that Krone girl is something else. To become the crown prince’s bride, there surely isn’t a better woman than her-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 28

They say the twins won decisively. Of course they did. With the magic stones I gave them, there was no way the King of the Sea could lose to a kraken.

But it wouldn’t be bad to come back nourished by the kraken’s magic stones and flesh-nya.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 6

I pride myself on being a reasonably competent researcher-nya.

However, I didn’t have enough knowledge to properly handle my nephew when he suddenly returned all grown up-nya.

I understand why Krone and Chris were so enthralled. But Olivia? You just have to endure it. Seeing her run off like that, I, as her sister, could only manage a wry smile.

Given the nature of dryads, Ain is a mate, so I suppose it can’t be helped-nya.

Continent Calendar — The 12th Month, Day 4

Ain defeated Lloyd-nya… It was an overwhelming victory, with power to spare.

It must be related to his increased size. No matter how I ask, though, Dill won’t tell me what happened.

…There’s no doubt that Father’s words were involved, right-nya?

Continent Calendar — The 12th Month, Day 5

It’s merely a hypothesis. Merely a hypothesis-nya.

I hear the Living Armor in the Demon Lord’s Castle was stronger than Lloyd-nya. So, if Ain absorbed the Living Armor’s magic stone and underwent the subsequent changes, couldn’t that be something like demon lordification?

I think I understand why Father decided to keep quiet about it-nya.

Tomorrow, when I go shopping with Dill, I’ll ask again-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 12th Month, Day 6

He dodged the question. But the snack I got was delicious-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 12th Month, Day 6

I’ll make that nephew of mine cry someday-nya.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar – The 11th Month, Day 17

Lately, that clumsy elf feels left behind.

Physically, too-nya, but mainly in terms of emotional distance.

Continental Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 18

Chris was supposed to take the day off-nya, but she didn’t come out of her room at all today.

She seems to have eaten in her room-nya, but according to Martha, who brought her food, she had absolutely no energy.

Continental Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 19

On a sudden whim, Chris challenged Lloyd to their first duel in a long time-nya.

Lloyd won, of course-nya, but after it ended, he said that he might have lost today-nya.

Continent Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 20

Not sure why, but Chris seems to have snapped out of it-nya.

It seems she made a decision, and now she’s back to her usual self-nya. That’s actually kind of scary-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 27

That clumsy fool finally said it-nya!

To Ain! She said, “Please keep me by your side!” Well, it comes with the caveat “as a knight,” but still-nya.

The road ahead is still long-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 11th Month, Day 28

I woke up this morning and nearly dislocated my jaw. Chris had let her hair down, making her look even more beautiful than usual-nya.

After all the twists and turns, Lloyd’s back as a knight. Chris was dismissed as Marshal and became Ain’s personal guard… nya? What kind of farce is this-nya?

Honestly, men are such troublesome creatures. They can’t do anything without an excuse-nya.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇

Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day XX

The creature that appeared in Euro is abnormal.

I’ve never heard of a magic stone formed from miasma before-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day XX

Today, I deliberately caused an explosion in the lab-nya.

As expected, the target shelf was completely destroyed, shattering the magic stones and specimens stored there-nya.

Well then… Oz? You seem busy. Are you an enemy? Or perhaps…

Continent Calendar — The 6th Month, Day XX

The ship and knights that went to Heim have returned-nya!

But something’s off-nya. Why-nya? Ain isn’t here-nya.

…Why is Dill lying there-nya?

Katima von Ishtalika, Recorded: Continental Calendar — The 6th Month, Day XX

First, Father, please forgive me for leaving without saying anything.

Mother, Katima would be delighted if you could understand.

The fact that you read my diary means that you understand my actions after hearing Oz’s words.

Must have failed.

Many words would be unseemly. Please allow me to pursue him myself.

I have the materials I’ve gathered so far in my bedroom.

They are all on the desk. I would be grateful if you could look them over.

Does this mean I can no longer complain to my brother?

It would be rude to write at length in the diary, so please see the letter on the desk.

I have written one letter for each of you.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 1

↑I want to delete this because it became my dark history-nya.

Continental Calendar — The 7th Month, Day 2

Oh no-nya. That was the prince-nya. I am troubled-nya…

What should I do? I never studied or learned about this sort of thing!

Continental Calendar — The XXth Month, Day XX

…Nya? Are you reading this diary-nya?
