Chapter 3015. Uplifting

Chapter 3015. Uplifting

The larger farm nearby was growing several crops. Some were staples while others appeared to be new and in rotation so that the farmers could try something new. Luckily, Walker quickly realized that there was not a single farmer around.

Just the flat headed cows known for their tough and easy to preserve meat in the markets that adventurers loved to purchase lately. Well, what was left of what had seemingly been a larger heard of them just recently.

Right now he could only make out about twenty of them. But the way that the ground appeared, there had been at least two hundred at some point. The fake appearance he believed with his eyes came from the various pieces and pelts of the consumed heard on the ground. All who had been clearly ambushed from beneath their bellies and killed.

They only appeared to be on the ground until Walker moved above and toward the center of the large pasture where a mount of overturned earth and stone lay.

That was the perfect proof that right now there was a nest.

Even to prove that, he tossed a small bit of earth mana in to shifting some pebbles as above causing the ground to shift.

What revealed itself was not a larger living burrow moth, but several smaller cat sized worms.

’Burrow moth larvae

Unlike other species of moths or butterflies, this larva is developing its adult body within. Eventually it will tear the outer skin and begin to flap wings and shape legs. Until that point these worms will ambush prey from beneath the ground targeting weak points. They adore the softer organs of their prey.

They will also consume roots from nearly any plant as long as they are softer along with the grains and seeds as well. They are the cause for various lands to become barren temporarily since their waste takes three years to begin to break down and revitalize the places they once existed.

They are weaker since they do not have tough shells, they also primarily have an earth affinity since they can only possess a poisonous dark affinity and wind affinity once their wings are open in their adult form.

They are still very aggressive as are their adult forms and they normally only take up to five days to grow larger enough to break it in to their adult forms as long as large amounts of food are available.

These were a species of ancient monster often known for forcing ancient human tribes to abandon their villages and lands entirely. That was until the ancient humans realized that they could poison them with high amounts of acidic fruit juice or burn the adult forms easily...’

Walker could count seven of the larvae right now. But he also understood that the mass of overturned dirt here and the many missing cattle proved that there had to be nearly a hundred in the nest.

Proof that as mana returned and these species of monsters like this were always just dormant and waiting to be awakened.

Nowadays and in ancient times thoguh, there were no predators readily available to handle them. That was clear. It was also clear that there were ways of dealing with them that would not require constant fighting. Just acidic fruit juices, something naturally available. Or fire, something that could be handled with torches given out to the farmers themselves.

If the flames were such a massive weapon against this species of ancient monster, it also went to say that they were very weak to it and would be fearful of it. Perfect for helping the farmers who may believe that they had no way to handle this.

Walker held himself back from using a few fire balls and fore mana manipulation to deal with this. Instead, he used a communication crystal to leave a notice for Alice who could direct guards and anyone with the confidence here.

That way they could see and be there to help solve this problem themselves.

For a farmer, being unable to handle their own farm felt like an insult from the world itself. But being able to have a tool to handle those problems? That would make them empowered.

This also fits the demi-human culture much better. They were not a people that sat idly by, they acted with their strength and stood tall for it.

As Walker heard the guard group and several farmers with uneasy faces, he noticed that Alice also had several light warriors with her. She brought them because of their own goals to help the people.

This was part of that, whether they did or did not want to handle monsters and dangers of this degree. They had made promises and oaths. They were trying to become more than just a light warrior, this was a chance to make that a reality for their future.

Gasps and shouts of unease were not uncommon from everyone arriving, but Walker easily used some earth mana to lift a single burrow moth larva up.

"This is the larva of what is causing these issues. They hunt from the ground and eat constantly to become adults in five days as long as they can eat. They are strong but as larva they have only the earth affinity. That is why you can move through here. I have already cleared the air to not contain poisons right now."

Walker has been careful to create a stream of safe to breathe air that was not tainted with the scales from the burrow moth adults.

"They can be easily dealt with using acidic fruit juices. Their weak skin burns and allows that liquid to kill them. They are too weak to handle that. It also prevents you from having to fight them when they desire to consume anything they can. A simple misting or spray over your lands can handle hundreds."

Since Walker always had some sort of food in storage, he brought out a lemon and crushed it causing the immediate desperate squeal of the larva. The skin tore and it perished in seconds. It was an incredibly quick action that was like slamming a door on the majority of the fear currently there.

Some of the farmers even turned in the direction of their own farms thinking of fruits that they grew. Thinking of the solution being within their fields. How they could easily solve this issue for their very own neighbors without needing the guards to help them in the least.

"Second, they hate fire. So much that they will easily burn from it and flee from it. And they will not survive if even a little flame touches them."

Walker began to move but just the appearance of torches he dropped to the ground and lit caused the soil to move rapidly.

The larva had sensed their greatest natural predator appearing. Not that the sudden lighting of torches from Walker’s spatial storage and magic usage was normal in the least. But the awe from the farmers was because he had handed them a simple tool they knew well from many nights of watching their farms or staying late in to the night to plant specific seeds.

Just because the sun set did not mean that they stopped working. This just wasn’t the season that they normally lit torches and worked by their light. Normally that only happened with the final crops of the season and the final seeds planted before snow settled on the ground.

The sudden burst of soil came as the adult burrow moths appeared. They thought that they could flee.

Two of them the size of a small garden shed had erupted in to the sky trying to scatter their poison scales.

Not that Walker allowed that.

He made the flames flow up in to the air from him and burn their poisonous scales. Next, with a heavy hand, he pulled on the earth mana and wind mana. He condensed it instantly without much thought in to wind pressure and gravity magic slamming the two down in front of everyone. The larvae were also trying to wriggle away above ground now too.

"Their poison scales from their dark mana affinity and their ability to fly from wind mana is only available in their adult forms. You can avoid the poison since it burns in flames naturally. You can kill them if you have a little assistance from a wind mage."

"So clean up your farms and have the guards ready to take down their wings with arrows or magic."

Walker watched as the faces of the farmers who came twisted in to anger. They were about to get revenge.

They were reclaiming their farm land back to the safety that they were used to. And the light warriors who had come with Alice were showing true understanding of their purpose now.

Not defenders, but those who uplifted the people too.
