Chapter 5048: Query

The moment the Cheng family elders stepped out, nearly every prominent family in the city learned of it instantly. Some sent spies to observe, while others came out personally, eager to see what was happening.

"Old Predecessor, those three children arrived with that woman," the guard leading the way said, gesturing toward the three children seated by the first-floor window.

The Cheng family Old Predecessor looked over. He saw the three children sitting there, drinking water and eating pastries, chatting occasionally, and pointing at things on the street outside with smiles. Their ages were indeed as the guard had said—all quite young. However, it was immediately apparent that these three children were not from ordinary families; they were likely born into a distinguished lineage.

As they appeared, Hao’er also noticed them. After quietly observing them for a moment, Hao’er guessed these people must be from the Cheng family.

Perhaps sensing Hao’er’s gaze shift elsewhere, Mu Chen and Yue’er both looked toward the doorway. After a glance, they turned back. Yue’er asked, "Why are they staring at us?"

"They must be from the Cheng family," Muchen said, finishing the water in his cup. He told Yue’er, "Go check if Sister Mi’er has finished preparing the dishes."

"Okay." Yue’er, seeing her brother dismissing her to the kitchen, didn’t protest. She simply nodded and headed toward the kitchen.

Because of their arrival, the inn’s patrons were swiftly cleared out by the Cheng family’s people. Only Hao’er’s table remained seated in the entire inn. Outside, Cheng family guards surrounded the area, preventing anyone from approaching.

"Children, do you know the identity of the woman in green who traveled with you?" the Cheng family Old Predecessor inquired as he approached.

Hearing this, Hao’er and Muchen exchanged glances. Hao’er spoke up, "You’ve come all this way—don’t you already know?"

The Cheng family patriarch’s eyes flickered. Seeing these two children sitting here without a trace of fear or panic, daring to speak to him like this, he couldn’t help but be slightly moved.

They truly weren’t children from ordinary families. Such composure at their age was truly rare.

In the kitchen, Yue’er approached Song Mi’er and said, "Sister Mi’er, the Cheng family people are here outside! My second senior brother sent me to tell you." As she spoke, she tiptoed and secretly pinched a piece of meat, popping it into her mouth. Finishing, she even sucked her little finger into her mouth and licked it clean.

Upon hearing her words, Mi’er turned just in time to catch the sight. She gasped softly, "Oh my! How could you lick your finger! Did you wash your hands just now? You shouldn’t put your fingers in your mouth." As she spoke, she led Yue’er to the sink to wash her hands. "Are you hungry? Let me serve you some food to fill your stomach first."

Yue’er smiled brightly, letting her help wash her hands while saying, "I did wash my hands just now."

"Even if you did, you shouldn’t put your fingers in your mouth. It’s dirty." Mi’er said, washing her hands thoroughly before taking a bowl and chopsticks to serve her some food. She asked, "Did the Cheng family arrive? Are your two Senior Brothers outside?" She remained vigilant, mindful not to reveal their identities.

"Mhm, they’re still sitting over there~" Yue’er took the bowl and chopsticks, sat down at the small chair, and began eating.

Hearing this, Mi’er said, "Then you eat here. I’ll go check." With that, she grabbed her own flat pan from the stove and started to head out, only to be pulled back by a small hand.
