"Watch out!"
Seeing him about to tumble into the black mud pit behind, Yue’er lashed out with her whip, snatching his foot and pulling him back.
With her assistance, Shen Shiqi, who had lost his balance, quickly regained his footing, spinning around to land on solid ground.
At that moment, Xiao Junyan frowned at the surrounding green plants, their mouths agape, dripping liquid. "These plants mimic human voices," he said. "And the scent they emit induces hallucinations."
"Help... help..."
The sound echoed again, emanating from the greenery. It mimicked the desperate cries of someone seeking help—or perhaps, someone had indeed fallen victim earlier, swallowed whole. In that moment of utter despair, they had cried out for rescue, yet no one could come to their aid.
After destroying the surrounding man-eating plants, the trio exchanged glances. Shen Shiqi remarked, "I suspect the deeper we go, the stranger things will get."
"Oh? It’s you guys?" Two figures leapt through the air, bounding over the trees and landing beside Shen Shiqi.
"Yun Qi, I didn’t expect you’d still be here. I thought you’d left long ago! But honestly, this place really isn’t suitable for a young girl like you. It’s far too dangerous." Zheng Yuan shook his head.
Yue’er smiled, her eyes crinkling. "I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. I can protect myself."
"This place is some kind of haunted spot. We’ve only come a short distance, yet it’s taken us forever. Let me tell you, you have to be careful around this black mud. It eats people. Once you step in, getting out is tough," Chen Tao chimed in.
Shen Shiqi glanced at the two of them and asked, "How did you two end up together?"
"We met along the way," Chen Shou replied. "Though I only encountered him—no sign of the others. I wonder if they’ve perished?" He scanned the surroundings and sighed softly. "I thought this secret realm wouldn’t be too dangerous, but it’s already claimed quite a few lives."
After gathering and chatting for a while, the group moved on. After walking for some time, they heard the sounds of combat echoing through the forest. Exchanging glances, they swiftly headed toward the source of the commotion.
"Yang Hao?" Shen Shiqi and the others called out in surprise. They saw him surrounded by a pack of fierce beasts. The beasts were numerous and quite powerful. Under their coordinated attack, Yang Hao had already sustained many injuries. Immediately, the group gathered their energy and leapt forward, joining the fray.
Seeing them, Yang Hao gasped for air. "Phew! Looks like I won’t die here after all."
With Shen Shiqi and the others joining the fray, the beasts sensed defeat and quickly fled. Since Yang Hao had sustained multiple injuries, Yue’er took out some medicine and bandaged his wounds.
"Thank you," Yang Hao said, nodding to her in gratitude.
Yue’er smiled and said, "Fortunately, the injuries aren’t severe. Stopping the bleeding and bandaging them should do the trick. No big deal."
The group gathered around, sharing stories of their recent encounters and observations within this realm. They even discussed the peculiar occurrences they’d witnessed, hoping to gain insights from the others.
However, just as their conversation grew lively, the ground began to tremble faintly. Thunder and lightning erupted in the sky, and soon, rain as large as beans began to fall.
