Chapter 1144: The Slap That Broke Fumiko
Kasumi’s sobs grew louder, her body shaking as she hugged me tightly, her tears falling onto my face. "Jack... please..." Her voice was a plea, her heart torn apart.
"Why are you doing this to me? To us?!" Her fingers dug into my shirt, her grip desperate, as if she could will me back to life through sheer force.
"I need you... Yuko needs you... Haruna needs you... How can you leave us like this?!" Her voice broke, her body wracked with sobs.
"You idiot... You fool..." She pressed her forehead to mine, her tears mixing with the blood on my skin. "Don’t you dare leave me..."
Fumiko’s voice was a roar as she yelled toward the hospital entrance. "SOMEBODY HELP! WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY!" She pressed her hands against my artery, her own tears falling onto my chest, but I let my body go limp, my breathing shallow. The blood pooled beneath me, a dark, spreading stain.
I was lifted onto a stretcher and rushed to the ICU. As the doctors and nurses swarmed around me, I used my telepathy to freeze them in place, their movements halting as if time itself had stopped.
Then, I activated my healing factor, sealing the wound instantly, restoring my body completely. The pain vanished, but the emotional agony remained, a weight I knew I’d carry forever.
Outside the ICU, Kasumi and Fumiko sat in stunned silence, their emotions a storm of grief, guilt, and shock. Fumiko clutched the bloodstained paper and my phone, her hands shaking so violently the paper trembled.
She read my words over and over, her voice a broken whisper. "It’s all my fault... I pushed him to this..." Her tears dripped onto the paper, smudging the ink. "I was the one who caused this..." Her voice was thick with guilt, her mind haunted by the consequences of her test.
She looked at Kasumi, who was crying uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands. "I pushed him to death..." Fumiko whispered, her voice thick with guilt. "I was the one who caused this..."
Kasumi lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen from crying, her voice a trembling whisper. "Why does he want to do this...? Didn’t you say... You wanted to ask for his heart... to see his reaction...? Why does he want to commit suicide...?" Her mind was spinning, her heart unable to comprehend the depth of my love.
Fumiko nodded, her tears falling freely. "Because... Because... a living person cannot donate their heart..." Her voice broke, her guilt crushing her. "So he..." She couldn’t finish the sentence, her sobs choking her words.
Kasumi felt as if the world had stopped. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor, her hands clutching her chest as if she could physically feel her heart breaking. "When...? Why didn’t I hear it...?" Her voice was a whisper, her mind reeling.
Fumiko wiped her tears, her voice trembling. "It’s because I didn’t want you to hear it..." She paused, her guilt overwhelming. "So I muted the phone before he could reply... so you didn’t hear it..." Her voice was a confession, her shame palpable. "I was afraid... I was afraid you would fall in love with him... that it would eventually destroy your family... and that you might even get hurt in this relationship with no hope of recovering..."
She handed Kasumi the paper, her hands shaking. "I told him that it was illegal to donate a living person’s heart... so... he..." Her voice trailed off, her tears falling as she gestured to the words I had written.
Kasumi took the paper, her hands trembling as she read the words aloud, her voice breaking with each syllable. "’After my death, please give my heart to Kasumi Suzuki... and keep my information confidential... Never let her know who her heart belongs to...’" Her voice cracked, her mind unable to process the depth of my sacrifice. She pressed the paper to her chest, her body shaking as if the words themselves were tearing her apart.
Then, as if a dam had broken, her grief turned to rage. With a sudden, violent motion, she slapped Fumiko across the face, her voice a broken scream. "You..." Her hand trembled as she pulled it back, her tears streaming down her face.
"You killed him!" Her voice was a sob, her guilt overwhelming. "You should have stopped him...!" She collapsed against the wall, her body wracked with sobs.
"I shouldn’t have trusted you..." Her voice was raw, her words laced with despair. "I killed Jack... I killed him..." She clutched her head, her nails digging into her scalp.
"How will I face Yuko and Haruna...? How will I live with this...?" Her voice broke, her body shaking as if the weight of the world had settled on her shoulders.
She clutched the paper to her chest, her voice a whisper, her heart pouring out. "Why are you so foolish, Jack...?" Her tears fell like rain, her love and grief intertwined. "You’re only thinking about yourself..." Her voice trembled, her anger and sorrow battling within her.
"What about me...? What about Yuko... Haruna...?" She looked up at the ceiling, her voice breaking. "How are we supposed to live if something happened to you...? How...?" Her body collapsed under the weight of her emotions, her sobs echoing through the empty hallway.
Fumiko knelt beside her, her own tears falling, her voice a whisper. "Kasumi... I’m so sorry..." She reached out a trembling hand, but Kasumi flinched away, her body curling in on itself.
"I didn’t know... I didn’t think..." Her guilt was a physical pain, her mind haunted by the consequences of her actions. "I thought I was protecting you..."
Kasumi shook her head, her voice a broken sob. "No... No, it’s my fault..." She clutched her chest, her heart aching as if it had been ripped from her body.
"I should have told him... I should have stopped him..." Her voice was a whisper, her grief overwhelming. She pressed her fists to her eyes, her body shaking. "I loved him too..." Her confession was a whisper, a secret she’d buried deep inside. "I loved him... and now he’s gone..."
Fumiko’s breath hitched, her eyes widening as the realization dawned on her. "Kasumi... "
But Kasumi didn’t answer. She just sat there, crying, holding the paper that proved my love, her heart shattered beyond repair. And as she sobbed, her voice a broken whisper, I knew—she would carry this pain for the rest of her life.
