Chapter 1147: Fumiko’s Path to Redemption

Kasumi instantly pulled back, her face flushing a deep crimson as if she’d just realized the weight of what she’d done. Her hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with a mix of shock and embarrassment.

"Y-You... wait..." Her voice was flustered, her gaze darting between me and the door. "I’ll bring the doctor... You’re still injured..."

Before I could protest, she bolted out of the room, her footsteps echoing down the hallway. A moment later, she returned with the doctor and nurses in tow.

I’d already used my telepathy to ensure they’d play their parts perfectly. They moved with practiced efficiency, checking my vitals, examining the bandage on my neck, and exchanging professional nods.

"He is showing good recovery," the doctor announced, his voice calm and reassuring. "There’s no problem. The wound wasn’t infected, and he could be discharged and taken home." He adjusted his glasses, his tone leaving no room for argument. "There’s no need to worry. Just don’t get water on your bandage."

Kasumi nodded, her shoulders sagging slightly in relief. "Thank you, doctor..."

As the doctors and nurses filed out, the door swung open again, revealing Fumiko standing in the doorway. Her face was pale, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from crying. She hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering between Kasumi and me, before stepping inside.

Kasumi’s body tensed, her voice sharp and unyielding. "What are you doing here?" Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her anger a palpable force. "Get away."

Fumiko didn’t hesitate. She dropped to her knees in front of Kasumi and my bed, her head bowing low, her voice a broken whisper. "I’m sorry, Jack... Please forgive me..." She lifted her gaze, her eyes brimming with tears. "I’ve already resigned from my position. I know I’m not qualified to be a doctor..."

I noticed the way her coat gaped slightly as she knelt, the deep cleavage of her blouse revealing more than she likely intended. But there was no malice in it—only desperation, only regret.

Kasumi’s voice was a whip-crack. "Stop, Fumiko..."

I reached out, my hand finding Kasumi’s, my grip firm. My voice was soft but steady as I addressed Fumiko. "Ms. Fumiko... please don’t do this. I’m not angry..." I shook my head, my gaze sincere. "I want to thank you."

Kasumi’s head snapped toward me, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Jack, what are you saying?" Her voice was laced with frustration, her fingers tightening around mine. "Why do you want to thank her? For almost killing you?"

I shook my head again, my grip on Kasumi’s hand tightening as I lifted it slightly, as if to emphasize my point. "I want to thank Ms. Fumiko..." My voice was gentle, my eyes never leaving hers. "Maybe if this didn’t happen... I would never have been able to confess my feelings to Oka-san."

Kasumi’s breath hitched, her eyes glistening with fresh tears. The words hit her like a physical blow, her grip on my hand loosening slightly as she processed what I’d said.

Fumiko’s eyes widened, her surprise evident. She hadn’t expected forgiveness—let alone gratitude.

With Kasumi’s help, I shifted slightly, sitting up straighter in the bed. My voice was steady, my gaze flickering between the two women. "After hearing from Oka-san... I know this was just a misunderstanding." I paused, my voice softening. "I want Ms. Fumiko to continue to be Oka-san’s personal doctor."

Kasumi’s voice was a whisper, her confusion and emotion warring within her. "Jack, this..."

I turned to her, my free hand reaching up to brush a tear from her cheek. "Oka-san..." My voice was tender, my gaze unwavering. "Ms. Fumiko is your doctor. And she understands your situation best." I gestured slightly toward Fumiko, my voice firm.

"And she is also your friend. She can help you." My thumb traced circles against Kasumi’s skin, my voice gentle but persuasive.

"I know Oka-san is worried about her daughter... and now with me..." I let the words sink in, my gaze never leaving Kasumi’s. "You’ll at least have someone you can talk to... someone who can help you."

Kasumi’s breath trembled, her thoughts a whirlwind of conflict. I caught the flicker of her resolve through my telepathy: [That... yeah... Fumiko is my friend... She already knows my relationship with Jack... but she hurt Jack like that... Jack has already forgiven her... so...]

Kasumi’s voice was firm, her gaze shifting to Fumiko, though her grip on my hand remained tight. "Fumiko..." Her voice was a warning, her eyes sharp.

"I’m telling you... if you ever do or say anything that hurts Jack..." Her voice dropped to a dangerous whisper, her free hand clenching into a fist. "Then I will really show you no mercy." Her voice was cold, her threat unmistakable. "I will kill you myself if anything happens to Jack."

Fumiko’s breath hitched, her gaze dropping to the floor, her voice barely audible. "I understand..." Her shoulders shook slightly, her tears falling onto the polished hospital floor like scattered diamonds.

She didn’t look up again. With a final, shaky breath, she stood, her movements heavy with guilt, and left the room. The door clicked shut behind her, the sound echoing like a period at the end of a painful Chapter.

Kasumi’s phone rang instantly, the sudden chime cutting through the silence. She picked it up, her thumb hovering over the screen for a moment before she answered, putting it on speaker.

Haruna’s voice filled the room, bright and warm, completely unaware of the emotional storm we’d just endured. "Oka-san... are you still in the hospital? How long will it take to come back? We’re all at home... waiting for you guys."

Kasumi’s gaze flickered to me, a flicker of guilt passing over her face. I glanced at the clock on the wall—9 P.M. The night had slipped away from us, stolen by the chaos of emotions, near-tragedies, and confessions. I gave her a small, reassuring nod, my hand squeezing hers gently.

Kasumi cleared her throat, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "We... we will be back soon... We just went out for shopping for a while..."

Haruna’s voice was cheerful, oblivious to the weight of the moment. "Ok... Ok... Don’t forget to buy me something... Bye..."
