Chapter 503: Evolving the law strand

Chapter 503: Evolving the law strand

Ethan exhaled slowly, his gaze steady despite the tension beneath the surface. "Is that so? Greed truly is something no one can rid themselves of," he said, his tone was calm, almost reflective.

He had expected this outcome. Perhaps not today, but certainly soon. Even so, the speed at which events had unfolded exceeded his expectations. Still, Ethan allowed none of these thoughts to surface in his expression. His face remained composed, unreadable.

"Thank you, Founder," Ethan continued politely. "However, I would prefer to reach level ten before attempting something that dangerous. Would that be acceptable?"

For a brief moment, the Founder’s expression tightened, a flicker of displeasure crossing his features. He clearly disliked the delay, yet he did not dare to force the matter. The process he desired was tied to the soul, and that alone made it delicate. He had already attempted to seize Ethan’s soul once, and the result had unsettled him. He had felt nothing. There had been no presence to grasp, no essence to anchor onto. That absence had not discouraged him; it had only deepened his obsession.

"Yes, that will be fine," the Founder replied after a pause. His voice regained its usual composure, though the tension lingered beneath it. "Tell me, what have you been doing with those monsters? Have you attempted to approach them?"

Ethan understood the intent behind the question immediately. The restraints placed upon the monsters were not as stable as they appeared. If he lingered near them for too long, the bindings would fail, and the creatures would be released. In that moment, they would attack without hesitation. That was the arrangement the Founder had engineered.

What the Founder did not realize was that Ethan had already tested those limits many times. Each time he advanced to a new level, he had approached the monsters deliberately. When the restraints had loosened, he had faced them without hesitation. With the Sword of Infinity in his hand, even unrestrained monsters had fallen effortlessly. At the time, Ethan had not questioned their behavior. Now, however, the pattern was clear. Their aggression, their timing, even their apparent hesitation—it had all been orchestrated.

"I possess a certain talent," Ethan said evenly. "It allows me to grow stronger gradually by remaining near powerful beings. However, the process requires time."

The Founder’s eyes sharpened, a faint hunger surfacing in them. "Is that so?" he murmured, his curiosity intensifying. "Then do you require those monsters to level up, or can you advance simply by staying near them?"

"I will need to kill them eventually," Ethan replied. "That is unavoidable if I wish to level up. However, as you know, monsters are significantly stronger than humans. By remaining near them, the gap between us narrows over time. It becomes manageable."

"I see." The Founder nodded slowly, though his mind was clearly racing. "In that case, I will provide you with enough monsters to help you reach level ten as quickly as possible."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and left.

Ethan watched him go, a faint smile forming on his lips once the man was out of sight.

"You will be quite surprised when you return," he said quietly.

He shifted his attention inward. "Yumiko, my Law of Infinity strand can be strengthened by the gray mist, correct? If that is the case, could I not continue evolving it indefinitely? Why would I need to rely on leveling up at all?"

A calm voice responded within his mind.

[You can indeed strengthen your Infinity strand using the gray mist. However, its growth will eventually plateau at approximately level one hundred and thirty to one hundred and forty. This limitation exists because the strand alone cannot exceed what the physical body can sustain. To wield a law strand of greater magnitude, you must possess a correspondingly powerful body.]

Ethan listened in silence as Yumiko continued.

[This is where Elysium differs from the outer worlds. Elysium is one of two infinite realms. The other is known as Hyperion. While Elysium focuses on physical and experiential progression, Hyperion is centered on the evolution of law strands. However, both worlds are incomplete. Their upper limit is level five hundred. Only by merging the two can a truly infinite world be formed. The outer worlds are merely fragments, imperfect creations born from the system’s attempt to replicate what is missing. However none of them have succeeded.]

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly. The implications were profound. For the first time, the path ahead became clear.

"A level five hundred ceiling," he said thoughtfully. "Yet the strongest heroes are only around level two hundred, are they not?"

[The true supremes who have surpassed that threshold are no longer concerned with such matters], Yumiko replied. [They are searching for Hyperion. Their goal is to merge the two infinite worlds and break beyond the current limits. They have no interest in playing the roles of heroes or villains.]

Ethan nodded slowly. The hierarchy of power was far broader than he had initially imagined.

"Then I will first push my law strand to its natural limit," he said. "Once I reach that point, I will decide my next course of action."

With that, he entered the space cube.

The interior was silent, isolated from the outside world. Ethan sat cross-legged, his posture steady, and raised the index finger of his right hand.

"Gray mist," he said softly.

At once, a dense, swirling mist formed at his fingertip. It pulsed faintly, carrying an energy that felt both vast and destructive.

"Master—"

The voice came sharply, almost panicked.

Ethan immediately dispelled the mist, his brows knitting together. "What happened?"

"Master, that gray mist can vaporize me instantly," the voice replied, trembling. "If I come into contact with it, I will be erased completely. Even time reversal will not be able to restore me."

Ethan’s expression softened slightly. "I understand. I will be careful. And I apologize for alarming you."

"There is something else," she continued hesitantly. "If you become a little bit more stronger, I will no longer be able to accelerate time for you. You will surpass my limits entirely."

Ethan allowed himself a faint smile. "Do not concern yourself with that. I will find a way to evolve you as well. Besides, I already possess my own time field."

With a snap of his fingers, a subtle distortion spread outward. His personal time field expanded, enveloping the space cube and overriding its existing flow.

His talent, Eternal God Chronos, allowed him to accelerate time to an extraordinary degree. At present, he could increase the flow of time by up to one million times. In truth, he no longer required external assistance, yet he chose to remain within the cube for its stability.

Once the environment stabilized, Ethan summoned the gray mist again.

This time, he guided it carefully, allowing it to seep into his body.

The moment it entered, a violent surge erupted within him.

A deep resonance echoed through his being as the Infinity strand responded. It absorbed the mist eagerly, expanding at an astonishing rate.

Ethan steadied his breathing, focusing his mind as he adapted to the rapid transformation.

"The supreme primordial gods," he said after a moment. "How long are their law strands?"

[When your law strand reaches 10¹⁰⁰ kilometers, it will undergo its final transformation. At that stage, you will become a primordial supreme god, equivalent to a level one hundred and thirty powerhouse.]

Ethan paused, calculating silently.

"That is an immense scale," he muttered. "Even at this rate, it would take approximately fifty million years to reach that level. With the assistance of accelerated time and Nini’s help for now, the duration could be reduced to around five years."

He frowned slightly, considering the implications.

The path was not impossible, but it demanded patience and precision. Every step carried risk, and every advancement required control.

[Proceed as far as you can master. If the situation becomes untenable, you may need to leave this place. There is... something of interest occurring outside. So you won’t be in trouble soon. The founder will take his sweet time to return this time.]
