Chapter 1436: Chapter 1437: Let Li Shengxiao Send People Away

She was deeply concerned about her granddaughter and insisted on coming over upon hearing about Lin Wan’s car accident. After rushing here and waiting outside for so long, her energy was already stretched to its limits. Hearing Su Yi’s words, she didn’t insist on staying. However, she wouldn’t let Lin Teng leave with her. “I’ll go back by myself. Let Lin Teng stay here to accompany Wanwan. Over the years, as a father, he hasn’t taken good care of you both. This time, with Wanwan’s car accident, he didn’t even manage to rush over immediately. Now that everything’s fine, let him stay. Otherwise, even if he goes back, his heart will still be preoccupied with the child…”

Su Yi furrowed her brows, expressing her concern, “But Mom, how will you get back? I’m worried about you going alone.”

Madame Lin smiled faintly, her expression relaxed, and said, “What’s there to worry about? My health hasn’t been great these past two years, but my mind is still clear. There’s a driver waiting for me outside; I can go out on my own.”

Su Yi still felt uneasy and insisted, “I’ll take you outside. I’ll come back after seeing you off!”

Madame Lin, supported by her, did not reject this kind gesture. She nodded in agreement. “Alright.”

As they were heading out, she suddenly turned her head and looked toward Chu Xi, asking gently, “Miss Chu, do you have someone coming to pick you up?”

Chu Xi shook her head, looking a bit embarrassed as she replied, “I haven’t called home yet.”

“I see… That’s fine.” Madame Lin unexpectedly suggested, “How about asking Shengxiao to give you a ride?”

Chu Xi immediately cast a glance at the dignified and commanding man, then quickly withdrew her gaze. After hesitating for a moment, she said, “That might not be appropriate. Mr. Li likely has other matters to attend to. I wouldn’t want to trouble him.”

Madame Lin, politely but firmly, seemed to be addressing both Chu Xi and Li Shengxiao as she said, “You saved Wanwan’s life this time, and for that, you are a great benefactor to our family. On top of that, your left hand is fractured from saving Wanwan, and you can’t drive. We have no excuse to leave you unattended, whether emotionally or logically. Shengxiao doesn’t have any plans tonight; it’s perfectly reasonable for him to give you a ride. Shengxiao, what do you think?”

Li Shengxiao’s face remained cold and austere as he stood up without a word, neither agreeing nor refusing.

In this tense atmosphere, his indifference was tantamount to a refusal.

Even so, Madame Lin refused to relent, despite Shengxiao’s unchanged expression. The tension in Lin Teng’s temple visibly pulsed as he stepped forward and said, “Mom, Shengxiao has his own matters to deal with. I’m free—I can take Miss Chu home.”

Madame Lin, knowing full well that he was deliberately covering for Li Shengxiao, shot him a displeased glare and said, “And since when do you have nothing to do? We’re all leaving—shouldn’t you stay to take care of Wanwan? She’s just come out of surgery! How can you be at ease knowing she’s left completely alone?”

“But…”

Su Yi silently shook her head at him, a subtle reminder not to go back on the promise he had made to her earlier.

Caught between everyone, Lin Teng felt thoroughly conflicted. For the first time, he realized that these trivial family matters were more vexing and burdensome than the responsibilities he normally dealt with—so burdensome that no matter whom he helped, it would feel wrong.

His mature and composed face showed signs of weariness as his gaze landed on the tall figure of the man across from him. With great difficulty, he found himself saying, “Shengxiao, perhaps you could give her a ride?”

As he spoke, he felt deeply embarrassed.

He couldn’t help but feel like he had failed miserably as an uncle!

Yet he was truly stuck in the middle with no easy way out. After all, Chu Xi had saved Lin Wan’s life. Not being able to leave himself but still doing nothing for her was simply unacceptable. The only person left with any free time was Li Shengxiao, leaving Lin Teng with no other choice!

But as soon as the words left his mouth, he realized how inappropriate it was! After all, it was Lin Wan whom Chu Xi had saved, and any debt of gratitude was his to settle—how could he ask Li Shengxiao to repay it for him?
