Chapter 1500: Chapter 1501: Apologize to Her
When Chen Hai entered, Rong Yan was sitting on a stool barely a few inches high, cooling off in the summer breeze. Her porcelain-white skin was tinged with a blush of crimson under the setting sun, and even with her eyes closed, lost in thought, she looked as beautiful as a painting.
As if sensing his presence, the resting figure turned her face towards him. Her eyes sparkled with radiance, brighter than the sunset behind her. Chen Hai’s heart skipped a beat and, instinctively, he averted his gaze, not daring to meet her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
In his entire life, he had never apologized to anyone, yet at this moment, he did it willingly. Without any cursing, his tone was sincere. “I heard everything from Monkey and the others. Thank you. Despite the way I treated you, you still chose to help.”
Rong Yan cast him a glance, her expression indifferent. “I wasn’t helping you. I was helping Ye Qi.”
“……” Chen Hai lowered his head awkwardly, his lips hesitating as he murmured, “…I understand.”
He had wanted to harm her; there was no way she would have assisted Qiqi because of him.
Taking a deep breath, he raised his head again and said, “No matter why you decided to help, I sincerely thank you. Mrs. Qi just told me that after Qiqi underwent acupuncture, she’s improved significantly—her body isn’t as cold as before, and her complexion is a lot rosier. You… don’t worry. Once Qiqi gets better, I’ll turn myself in. Whatever punishment the police give me, I’ll accept. As a man, I take responsibility for my actions. All I ask is that you don’t involve Qiqi in my mess—she knows nothing about it.”
One acupuncture session from Rong Yan was far from sufficient. Mrs. Qi had mentioned that Rong Yan planned to continue treating Qiqi for a month and even intended to reach out to an immunology expert in Mema for further help. He was terrified that Rong Yan might direct her anger toward Ye Qi.
After he spoke, Rong Yan didn’t bat an eye. She lifted her gaze slightly, looking at him. “Are you finished?”
Chen Hai nodded nervously, his fists clenched tightly by his sides. “…Yes, finished.”
He was still afraid of Rong Yan refusing.
After all, given her status, there was no real reason for her to waste time on country folks like them.
He could more or less guess that the reason Rong Yan decided to help Ye Qi was to avoid the risk of fainting from exertion and being unable to escape, possibly getting caught again and facing irrevocable consequences. But as he had said, no matter her reason for helping Ye Qi, help was help. He was a simple man, too unsophisticated to understand lofty principles. But he had grasped one truth: in life, you didn’t repay kindness with ingratitude—that was a principle he never dared to forget.
So, even if shame consumed him, Chen Hai still bore it silently. Lowering his voice, he pleaded, “Miss Rong, I’m a scoundrel. If I died ten thousand times, it still wouldn’t be enough to make up for my sins. But Qiqi and Mrs. Qi are good people. I beg you—please continue to help them. I’ll kneel before you.”
As he said this, without a moment of hesitation, his knees hit the ground. He knelt straight in front of Rong Yan, bowing his head forcefully to the floor. “I beg you, Miss Rong. Please save my sister.”
“Get up,” Rong Yan said, exhaling deeply, clearly surprised at the lengths he would go for Ye Qi. Her tone was steady but firm.
Chen Hai stubbornly remained kneeling, no longer speaking to plead with her, but his forehead kept striking the ground repeatedly, pleading in silence.
Rong Yan pressed her lips together, her face solemn. “I’ll say it again—get up. Do you want Mrs. Qi and the others to see this? Mrs. Qi is nearby, and Ye Qi is inside changing her clothes; once she finishes, she’ll come out. If they see you kneeling and hitting your head on the ground for me, what will they think? How do you expect me to explain it to them?”
Chen Hai’s body stiffened, his back straightened slowly, and his voice emerged, flustered and disheveled. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
