Chapter 1746: Chapter 1747: Nothing But My Substitute
Sister?
Rong Yan raised an eyebrow, looking at him strangely, unsure if he had misspoken in haste or confused her for Chu Xi in the chaos.
“Please wait a moment, Boss Qin.” The attending doctor dared not waste time and instructed the nurse to begin basic examinations for Jiang Chenyue.
He then pried open Jiang Chenyue’s eyelids.
“What are you doing! My mom just finished surgery, be careful!” Seeing this, Chu Xi was displeased and tried to stop the doctor.
Rong Yan could no longer tolerate her, pulling her aside and coldly warning, “Please keep quiet! Can’t you see the doctor is examining Mrs. Jiang? Why are you making noise? Do you think you know better than the doctor? If you don’t understand anything, just stay put and don’t interfere with the examination.”
Who do you think you are! Chu Xi’s face turned beet red, mixed with a tinge of blue, as her eyes bulged, fists clenched in fury.
Seeing Qin Jun looking over as well, she temporarily held back, planning to deal with Rong Yan once Jiang Chenyue woke up.
The doctor finished the series of examinations, wiped his hands, and moved away from the bed. Qin Jun quickly asked, “How is it, is my aunt awake?”
“I just observed the patient’s eyes, and the cerebral cortex is beginning to regain consciousness. However, her body has just undergone surgery and can’t yet bear the energy of waking up. The hand movement you mentioned is something I’ve seen often—generally, it’s a reaction when a patient, in a semi-conscious state, hears something that stimulates their nerves, causing such a subconscious response.”
Rong Yan immediately understood that Mrs. Jiang had heard the earlier argument between Qin Jun and Chu Xi.
The doctor appeared relaxed and continued, “Don’t worry, regaining awareness is a positive sign. Typically, after showing a sign of waking, the patient will wake up within an hour. You all can stay here, and when she wakes, you can talk to her for a bit. The first time a patient wakes won’t last long before they slip back into deep sleep, which is normal. If you’re concerned, you can call me over to check.”
“Okay.”
The doctor explained the situation in detail and then left with a group of nurses.
Rong Yan glanced at her phone; it was four in the morning. Waiting another hour would be around five. It seemed she wouldn’t sleep tonight.
She released Chu Xi’s arm, yawned tiredly, and returned to her seat.
Wait then.
Anyway, going back now wouldn’t allow much sleep, might as well stay until Mrs. Jiang woke up for some peace of mind.
…
An hour passed in the blink of an eye, and the ward was extremely quiet.
Both Qin Jun and Chu Xi kept a tacit silence during this hour, not breaking into another argument.
Midway through, the butler returned with some fruit. With nothing else to do, Rong Yan washed a bunch of grapes and started peeling them one by one.
Each grape needed peeling and deseeding; it was utterly troublesome. Yet she was quite patient and soon had a small bowl ready.
Watching her ‘pretend to be attentive,’ Chu Xi showed a look of disgust and couldn’t help but murmur, “You don’t need to pretend to be kind there, trying to show off yourself, Rong Yan. It won’t work on me. No matter how well you act, you’re just my substitute. Mom will never see you as me. As long as I’m here, you’ll never climb up to the Chu Family!”
She didn’t speak loudly; she deliberately lowered her voice.
The problem was that the ward was very quiet, and everyone was waiting for Jiang Chenyue to wake up. Her not-so-loud voice was still particularly piercing in the silence, loud enough for everyone to hear clearly.
