Chapter 1947: Chapter 1948: Not Even a Sip of Water Given
The hospital room was left with only her.
Chu Xi had shouted too forcefully earlier, clutching the quilt with all her might, her body leaning forward. Now her throat was dry and torn, and very painful, desperately wanting a drink of water.
But there wasn’t even a ghost in the hospital room, no one to bring her tea or water.
The places on her stomach and face where she was beaten burned with pain. Her wrist hung with an intravenous drip, lying on her back sprawled on the bed, eyes empty, staring at the ceiling, as if she were dead, motionless.
If she had known she would live like this, she would rather die!
She lay there quietly, unsure of how much time had passed. The drip hanging on the rod was already empty, and since no one came to take it out, bright red blood sucked back up the fine, soft infusion tube...
It wasn’t until Chu Xi felt a stabbing pain that she noticed her IV bag had run out.
...
The clinic’s medical equipment was rudimentary, and the medical staff had no sense of service.
When the nurse came to remove the needle, she saw Chu Xi’s arm, bruised from the pricks, showed no guilt, and perfunctorily helped her remove the needle, saying, "Alright. You’re fine, you can leave after the infusion. If you want to lie here for a while, that’s fine too, but we’ll have to charge for the bed."
Chu Xi turned over and sat up. She had cried enough, despaired enough. With a face full of slap marks, she numbly told the nurse, "I want to drink some water, please bring me a cup of water."
The old nurse’s uniform was crumpled. Hearing this, she arrogantly frowned, full of displeasure, "I’m a nurse, not an orderly!"
"I’ll give you money."
At the mention of money, the old nurse’s square face brightened considerably, "What kind of water do you want?"
Chu Xi’s listless eyes moved to her, her voice hoarse, "What kind of water do you have?"
"This is a clinic, not a shop. Of course, it’s just boiled water and cold water," the old nurse said discontentedly. Considering the money, she added, "I brought some tea leaves myself, I can make you a cup if you want some tea."
Afraid of losing out, she quickly added, "But my tea isn’t free. It was given to me by a relative, costs a few hundred..."
Chu Xi interrupted her expressionlessly, "I’ll just have plain water."
Tch, stingy!
The old nurse thought she could earn a bit more from her, but seeing she wasn’t having it, her face darkened, she scornfully curled her lips and said, "Wait!"
Before long, she came in with a paper cup, apathetically handed the cup of water to Chu Xi, "Here, drink it!"
After shoving the cup into Chu Xi’s hand, she didn’t care if it was enough, and left without looking back, not forgetting to slam the door before going out.
After a ’bang,’ the hospital room was once again left with only Chu Xi.
She buried her head, eagerly drinking a mouthful of water.
The icy cold water choked her throat, nearly making her cough her lungs out.
"Cough cough..."
After a fierce coughing fit, she clutched the sheet below her, the veins on the back of her hand bulging before she slowly calmed down.
After the unpleasantness from being choked had passed.
She began drinking much slower and more carefully, burying her head and sipping the cold water from the cup little by little.
"Phew." After drinking the last drop, she wiped her mouth, reluctantly tossing the empty cup into the trash can beside the bed.
Actually, she still wanted more...
But she knew in her heart, asking the nurse to come in and pour her more water was unrealistic. That old woman was only willing to help her get water because of the money, and yet deliberately brought her a cup of cold water.
