Chapter 1287: The Future

Chapter 1287: The Future

"What happens to those whose fates he consumes?" Amun’s expression darkened at the question.

"They die, Billion, but death is not an adequate description of what happens to them. When Theras consumes a being’s fate, he does not merely end their life or destroy their soul. He severs the very thread that allows their existence to continue along its destined course, consuming it completely.

Their bodies and souls cease to exist, leaving nothing behind that could be restored through ordinary means. There is no soul left to enter another realm, no body left to recover, and no continuation of their existence beyond that moment. They simply cease to be."

The explanation sent an uncomfortable chill through me, not because I had never witnessed death on such a scale, but because this was something fundamentally different.

Even the most devastating battles left remnants behind, whether in the form of shattered souls, ruined worlds, or the lingering Essence of those who had fallen. What Amun described would leave nothing that could be mourned beyond the memory of those who had witnessed it.

"And he intends to do this to every being he can reach," Amun continued, his voice steady despite the gravity of his words. "The Eternals, the Phantoms, the Abominations, and the populations of every vassal universe that has fallen beneath his control will all become part of the harvest.

The war was never simply about conquest, nor was it driven by a desire to rule over as many worlds as possible. Every universe he conquered expanded the number of beings he could eventually consume, while every civilization brought beneath his authority became another part of the foundation he needed to complete his plan."

His eyes remained fixed on the distant darkness as he spoke, and I could sense the memories behind his words, the destruction of the Seven Realms and the betrayal that had forced him to turn against his own brother.

"Theras understood long ago that reaching Godhood through Fate would require something he could not obtain through his own comprehension alone. Once he realized that the System could be modified to connect countless beings to him, he began preparing for a harvest on a scale no single universe could provide.

The invasions, the destruction of civilizations, and the subjugation of entire populations were all steps toward that objective. Even the creation of the seven Eternal Legions served his purpose, giving him armies that could conquer new territories while remaining bound to the same mechanism he intended to use for his ascension."

I looked toward the crimson chains extending across the void, finally recognizing that they represented more than Amun’s preparations for another battle. He had been waiting for this moment, watching the movements of his brother and preparing to oppose a plan that had been taking shape for longer than most beings could comprehend.

"But why now?" I asked, turning my attention back to him. "If he has spent so long preparing for this, what has changed that makes him ready to act?"

"His strength," Amun replied. "Theras has spent countless years advancing his comprehension of Fate, but the final stage of his growth has been far more difficult than anything that came before it. Recently, he reached the extreme limit of the High Demi-God realm, with his resonance in Fate pressed against the final boundary at ninety-nine percent.

He has reached a point where further preparation alone will no longer bring him closer to Godhood, and he cannot afford to remain trapped at that boundary indefinitely. He believes the Fate Harvest is now the only path left to him."

Amun turned toward me fully, and his expression carried a warning that needed no further explanation.

"That is why the Eternals have withdrawn. They are no longer concerned with winning every battle or expanding their territory through ordinary conquest. Theras is preparing to gather everything he has accumulated and use it in a single attempt to cross the final boundary.

If he waits too long, he risks remaining where he is, unable to advance despite all the power he has gathered. But if he begins the harvest before securing the fourth fragment, the process could collapse and ruin him. He is waiting for the final piece because he wants to make certain that when he acts, he will have the best possible chance of succeeding."

I remained silent, turning over everything I had learned. Theras had reached the same kind of wall that now stood before me, although our circumstances could hardly have been more different. I had gathered resonance with forty-nine Origins and pushed each one to ninety percent, yet none of them would advance further, regardless of how much time I spent studying them.

Theras had devoted himself to a single Origin and reached ninety-nine percent, only to discover that the final step remained beyond his grasp.

The difference was that I had continued searching for an answer, while he had decided that the lives of countless beings could be sacrificed to force one.

"And if he obtains the fourth fragment," Amun said, drawing my attention back to him, "then the harvest will no longer be confined by the limitations that have prevented him from acting at full scale. The System will be complete, the connections he has spent ages establishing will become part of a unified process, and he will be able to consume the fates of those he has prepared to reach.

The Prime Universe will be included in that harvest, along with every other universe within his grasp. Once the process begins, there may be no way to reverse it before everything is consumed."

His words left little room for misunderstanding. The Eternals had not retreated because their war was over, and Theras had not spent all those years conquering universes simply to sit upon a throne above them.

He had been gathering the pieces required to sacrifice them all for the sake of his own ascension, and now that he had reached the limit of his power, the final stage of his plan was approaching.

I had spent three years inside the Origin Expanse trying to understand what separated ninety percent resonance from complete comprehension, and I had returned without an answer. Theras had spent ages searching for his own breakthrough, and unlike me, he had decided that the entire existence of countless beings was an acceptable price to pay.

I could not allow him to complete that harvest. Whatever answer I needed to reach Godhood, I would have to find it before he obtained the fourth fragment, because once the fate of the Prime Universe fell into his hands, there might not be enough of existence left for me to protect.
