Chapter 714: Clinical Trial Conclusion Announcement

Chapter 714: Clinical Trial Conclusion Announcement

Two reports at once. The world had waited a month for one and got two in a single hour, and for a moment the frustration of the pre-order was forgotten as billions of people opened them side by side and started to read.

They went to the same place first. Not the revenue. Not the creator earnings. Section 13. Everyone had learned by now that the last section was where Nova buried the things that mattered most, the quiet lines that changed the world, and so the world scrolled past the billions and the device counts and went straight to the bottom of each report looking for one thing. The nanites. When would the rollout begin.

Month 9’s section 13 said nothing about them. It spoke only of the station, complete and ready, and the world exhaled in disappointment and moved on to Month 10.

And there it was, in the same flat, unhurried voice Nova used for everything, the line they had been starving for and dreading in equal measure. The clinical trial has concluded. All volunteers completed the trial and returned to their locations of origin. A full completion announcement will follow shortly.

Shortly.

That single word did more to the world than the hundred billion dollars printed above it. Because it was not a date. It was not a price. It was not a how or a where or a who-goes-first. It was a promise with no edges, and the whole planet seized on it at once.

Shortly. The cure for everything was coming shortly, and no one knew what shortly meant, and the not-knowing was unbearable. Every person who was sick, every person watching someone they loved run out of time, every person who had done the math on their own body and come up short, read that word and began to count days against a clock Nova had refused to set.

The debate that had gone quiet during the trial roared back to life within minutes, exactly where it had left off. One side saw a miracle arriving and could not understand the fury of the other. The other side saw the completion announcement coming, and behind it the subscription tiers everyone already knew were waiting, and they asked the question they had been asking since the beginning.

Shortly for whom. A cure that arrived attached to a monthly fee was not a cure arriving for everyone. It was a cure arriving for whoever could pay to keep it switched on, and the poorest people on Earth, the ones with the most disease and the least money, read shortly and understood it might not mean them at all.

The old war lit up LucidNet again, the same two camps, the same arguments, sharpened now by the fact that the thing was no longer theoretical. It had cured a hundred people in front of the entire world. It worked. And the only question left was the cruelest one, which was who would be allowed to have it.

But the reports held other things, and the people who studied Nova found their own reasons to stop and stare.

The numbers had done the impossible thing again, which was to become normal. A hundred and twenty-one billion in Month 9, a hundred and thirty-one in Month 10, gross economic activity moving through a single private company at a rate that would have been the envy of nations, and the world had grown so used to it that the figures barely registered anymore.

What caught the careful readers was smaller and stranger. The lowest-earning active creator on the entire platform still cleared thirty-two thousand dollars a month. Three hundred and eighty-four thousand a year, for the worst performer in the whole population, and the number had held even as tens of thousands more people crowded in beneath it.

That was not how economies worked. More mouths meant less for each. But Nova’s pool had simply grown to swallow them, and the people who understood money understood that this was the quiet flex hidden inside the report. Nova was not rationing prosperity. It was manufacturing it faster than it could add people to share it.

And then there was the line that only the truly attentive caught, buried in the revenue snapshot, and it was the one that told them the most about what Nova actually was.

The institutional terminal fees had fallen. Four hundred and seventy million in Month 9. Three hundred and eighty million in Month 10. In a report where every other number climbed, this one had bent downward, and the reason was the most revealing thing in either document.

The world’s institutions were running out. Nova had signed so many of the planet’s serious enterprises, brands, universities, and governments in its first months that the well of new ones was drying up.

The number was not shrinking because Nova was failing. It was shrinking because Nova was nearly finished, because there were only so many institutions on Earth worth signing and Nova had very nearly signed them all.

The decline was a saturation curve, and the analysts who saw it for what it was felt a small cold settle in their stomachs. When the last great company on Earth had bought its terminal, there would be no one left who had not.

The rest of the world did not read the reports that closely. The rest of the world had gone back to section 13 and was sitting with that one word, refreshing LucidNet, waiting.

The station was complete. The partnerships were signed. The nanites had cured everything a hundred human beings could throw at them. And somewhere above them all, a company that answered to no one had written the word shortly and gone silent, and eight billion people were left to wait on a clock they could not see, for an announcement that would tell them, at last, whether the future being built over their heads had a place in it for them.

The pre-order frustration, the frustration of the tenth Nova Night, of ten thousand devices for a planet of billions, had not gone away. It had simply been swallowed by something larger. Who cared about a Lucid tonight.

The Lucid was a door, and everyone had always known it, but now they knew what lay on the other side of it. The nanites required a Lucid to function. And so the ten thousand people who had won tonight had not just won a device. They had won a place at the front of a line that led to the one thing every human being would eventually want more than anything else.

The rest of the world watched them celebrate, and did the arithmetic, and understood with a fresh and terrible clarity exactly what they had lost by not being fast enough at midnight.

Shortly, Nova had said. And the whole world held its breath and waited to find out what the word would cost.

And shortly after indeed, the clinical trial conclusion announcement dropped.
