My Werewolf System

Chapter 1364: What is this thing?

Chapter 1364: What is this thing?

Inside the Manor, on the bottom floor, there was a special lab designed just for Tom. As Kai had stated, he had meticulously replicated everything that Tom had in his own personal lab.

The only thing that wasn’t there was the original data. It had taken close to an entire day to bring everything else over, but Tom had successfully transferred it all.

However, as he spent more time inside the lab, Tom had come to realise something. His deep interest in NIRV and the Altereds had mostly stemmed from his parents’ line of work and his own naturally curious mind.

He had already learned all that he could from it. He had helped Gary with a number of important matters, and Vlad was no longer under the dark control that had once consumed him.

On top of that, with the ongoing investigation into Altereds and his extensive research into beast crystals and other related topics, there really wasn’t much more for him to do at the moment.

Which was why he had started to use the lab’s supercomputers for something else entirely. He was pivoting toward learning how to make games and exploring game design in general.

He remembered he had a distant cousin, another Green, who was really into game creation as well. He had once been told that he could be hired by him if he honed and proved his skills.

So, Tom had decided he just had to put his mind to it and work hard.

It was then that he received a surprise visit from Gary.

“Oh! It’s nice to see you,” Tom said, swivelling around in his chair with a smile. “I was half expecting you to come in battered like the others. Every now and then, this whole room shakes, and I keep thinking it’s going to collapse.”

“I don’t think Kai would have built something like this so cheaply,” Gary replied with a small chuckle. “Honestly, I’m at the point where I don’t even know how much money we have. I never thought I’d live in a place like this.”

“Gone are the days when the two of us were stuck in a lowly Tier-3 town, huh?” Tom said, grinning.

The two of them laughed and chuckled together. When Gary finally sat down, they started talking about school for a while. It was nice for Gary to be able to share his thoughts and have a relaxed conversation.

He had never fully gotten to enjoy school life, but thanks to the path it had set him on, especially with the AFA, he had experienced many other incredible things. So, in the end, there were no regrets.

Eventually, Gary reached inside his shirt and pulled out a medallion, the one with the distinct marking of a wolf on its front.

“I wanted to ask you about this,” Gary began. “I know you said you swiped it from NIRV at the time, and you didn’t think much of it. You just thought it looked cool because of the wolf design.”

“But here’s the thing: it reacts with my system,” Gary explained. “It’s definitely an item that either belonged to the Werewolves or is connected to them somehow.”

Gary then handed the medallion over to Tom, who leaned forward, inspecting it closely. He looked even more surprised than Gary had expected.

“Your system actually reacted to this? What did it say?” Tom asked, intrigued.

“It said that it has an ancient past and that I don’t have enough power to unlock it,” Gary answered.

“Even now, after everything you’ve been through since getting it?”

“The first time it reacted was when I was fighting Lupus,” Gary replied. “I’m not sure if it was because of him, maybe it considered that he had enough power, but nothing really happened.”

“Or maybe even the fight between the two of us somehow activated it. But now, when I check it with the system, it just says the same message as before.”

“Do you remember where you got it from? Or do you have any clues as to what the link might be?”

Tom placed his finger thoughtfully on his chin, pausing for a moment. It had been a while ago, and he hadn’t paid much attention to it at the time, thinking it was unimportant.

“I don’t know if this will help, but I’ll tell you what I can,” Tom said. “You know how NIRV operates. They were buying large patches of land and excavating various sites. They had their theories and systems for identifying which pieces of land might contain beast fossils or beast crystals, but their predictions didn’t always pan out.”

“The medallion came from one of those sites, a dig that didn’t really work out. Honestly, they seemed surprised. They were expecting to find beasts, but instead, they just uncovered a bunch of other materials.”

“Things like what?” Gary asked.

“Things like this medallion, pieces of old armour stored in cases… and human remains,” Tom answered.

“Human remains? Not beast remains?” Gary asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Right. To NIRV, it was a complete loss. They still tested all the items to see if they had any links to beasts or if they could be activated somehow. But when nothing came of it, the stuff was just stored away. And, like I said, I only picked this one out because of the wolf design.”

Even with this new information, Gary wasn’t any closer to figuring out what the medallion could actually do. But maybe, just maybe, if he handed it over to Lupus after the upcoming Full Moon, they could uncover its secrets. That is, as long as things remained peaceful between them.

“It makes me wonder though… you said it was found among human remains, but this is an item meant for Werewolves?” Gary mused. “Isn’t the answer obvious, then?”

“What do you mean?” Tom asked, curious.

“Well, maybe those weren’t human remains at all. Maybe they were the ancestors of Werewolves. Where exactly was this site?” Gary asked.
