Chapter 1414: Hill of Resistance

Chapter 1414: Hill of Resistance

The fighting between the Lupus group and the Howlers had been raging for an hour and a half. There was still a significant amount of time left before the sun would rise.

However, for those caught in the chaos of battle, time meant nothing. They didn’t have the luxury to glance at the sky or wonder how many minutes had passed, they were fighting simply to stay alive.

The only reason the Howlers hadn’t been wiped out at the start was because of one crucial advantage, preparation.

They had chosen the battlegrounds in advance, guiding the enemy into specific zones. Those locations were carefully fortified with formations and traps, cleverly placed, deadly ones, ready to spring at the right moment.

The Werewolves, who had expected to brute-force their way through the skirmish, had been taken off guard. The sheer resistance had surprised them. Still, they rose to their feet again and again, undeterred and full of belief in their inevitable victory. After all, they knew something the others didn’t.

For the Werewolves, all they had to do was survive. The second wave was coming, and once it arrived, everything would change. The moment the Howlers saw them, their spirit would crumble. That was the belief etched into every Werewolf heart.

One particular location was holding out impressively well, that was where Austin, Vere, and Vlad were currently stationed.

They had used motorcycles from the parking lot, laying them out like a trap field. But Austin had a different plan for them.

Thanks to his immense strength, he could lift the bikes single-handedly. As soon as he spotted Werewolves scaling the hill in a frenzied charge, he began hurling them like missiles.

With every toss, the motorcycles became projectiles. The force of impact sent shockwaves through the air. When they landed, they hit hard, so hard that the vehicles nearly exploded, taking out the lead Werewolf and injuring several more surrounding them.

“They’re going to reach the top of the hill soon!” Vere shouted over the sound of chaos. “They’re resilient, some of them are still climbing even after being hit with multiple pieces of anti-Altered gear!”

One of the Werewolves continued charging, completely ignoring the electric rods pierced through his body. The devices were still pulsating, sparks crackling across his fur, yet he didn’t stop.

By the time he finally reached the top, his movements had slowed. That was all Vere needed. With a leap, she spun in midair and kicked him square in the face, sending him tumbling back down the hill like a ragdoll.

“Right,” Austin muttered, stealing a glance in her direction. “Even with that small frame of hers, she was the shadow fighter that gave me trouble before. Now that she’s an Altered, she’s covered the one weakness she had, raw power.”

But Austin couldn’t shake the unease creeping into his mind. The last time the Kings had launched an attack, it had made a serious impact.

And now, more Werewolves were appearing.

Not wasting another second, Austin decided it was time.

With a deep growl, his body began to change. Steam hissed from his nostrils. His muscles expanded. His skin thickened. He transformed, into his towering Minotaur form.

Without hesitation, he charged down the hill, a massive force barreling straight into the enemies.

Two Werewolves leapt at him. But Austin met them with a surge of speed, driving his massive arms out to either side. His forearms collided with their faces, bones cracked, teeth shattered, and both Werewolves were launched away.

They had never dealt with an Altered like this before, someone whose raw strength exceeded even theirs.

In this form, Austin was even larger than the average Werewolf. One bold fighter managed to sink its teeth into his arm, locking its jaw tight. But Austin barely flinched. He reached out with one hand, gripped the Werewolf by the head, and slammed it into the ground like a hammer striking an anvil. The creature bounced with a sickening thud.

Against Werewolves of this caliber, Austin didn’t even need to use his more condensed human battle form, the one he’d saved for opponents like Lupus himself.

Just then, as another Werewolf lunged toward his back, something dropped from above.

Dark tendrils wrapped around the charging beast, yanking it mid-air.

The Werewolf twisted around, eyes wide, and saw a small figure floating above, someone with glowing wings and dust-like sparkles trailing in the air. A moth-like Altered.

Before the Werewolf could retaliate, the small figure let go.

The beast plummeted.

And as it was about to hit the ground, bam!

Austin threw a punch straight into its descending body, launching it into the air like a meteor crashing into the earth in reverse.

The display of power wasn’t just hurting the Werewolves, it was rattling their confidence. Doubt was seeping into their hearts.

There were only three Altered stationed at the hilltop, Austin, Vere, and Vlad. Alongside them were fifty or so humans equipped with anti-Altered weapons.

But the Werewolves had come in force, almost sixty of them had launched this wave. And yet, seeing how quickly their numbers were being shredded…

The tide felt like it was turning.

“We’d need at least an Ironfang to take this guy down!” one of the Werewolves growled, his voice laced with frustration and fear.

Little did they know, Austin had fought Lupus, the very Alpha of the Ironfangs, and had wounded him.

If they’d known that… none of them would have stayed. They’d have turned and run.

“Should we fall back? Regroup with one of the other squads?” one Werewolf asked. “We’ll have to face them again eventually… but at least we’d have reinforcements.”

“What time is it? It can’t be much longer now. When the next wave comes, we might actually stand a chance.”

Uncertainty festered. The Werewolves at the back held their ground, caught in limbo. Move forward and risk death? Or wait?

It didn’t matter.

Austin wasn’t waiting.

With a powerful leap, he shot across the battlefield, closing the distance in seconds. He landed right on top of one of the hesitant Werewolves, his hand gripping its skull as he drove it into the dirt.

The earth cracked beneath them.

“What were you talking about?” Austin asked, his deep voice rumbling like thunder. “What’s going to be here soon?”
