Chapter 1430: He Returns
Chapter 1430: He Returns
Gary was struggling as he fought against Ylva. His breath was heavy, his eyes scanning the chaos. He could see the Werewolves rushing past him, their expressions wild and frenzied. Their eyes glowed unnaturally, and their strength was clearly enhanced.
These Werewolves stormed up the hill, one after another. Even when struck by Anti-Altered equipment, they barely flinched, it was as if nothing could stop them. And it didn’t take long before they smashed into the line of Altereds who had formed a barrier near the restaurant.
This line was made up of a combination of fighters, those trained by the AFA and Crawley’s elite group. They stood side by side, doing everything they could to hold the line.
Izzy made the first move. With her special ability, her long strands of hair whipped out and wrapped around one of the charging Werewolves. With a powerful motion, she hurled the beast high into the air.
From below, Ian stepped forward. With a sharp movement of his hand, he fired several stiff bristles that pierced the airborne Werewolf. Blood poured from its wounds, trailing behind it in the air.
Even then, with blood gushing and its body spinning mid-air, the Werewolf’s eyes still looked full of life. It was clear: the moment it landed, it would launch itself at them again.
But it never got the chance to hit the ground.
Slicing through the air like a dark missile, Crawley struck with a blade made entirely of condensed feathers. The weapon slashed clean across the Werewolf’s neck, decapitating it in a single stroke.
Crawley landed on the ground just seconds later. Dark feathers erupted from his body, blasting out in both directions like a shockwave and striking several more of the enemies that surrounded them.
“It’s a strange feeling,” Crawley said between breaths. “Fighting side by side with you again.” He glanced at Numba, who stood a few steps away. Crawley had trained Numba himself back when he was part of the special program at the AFA.
“Don’t strain yourself too much,” Numba replied. “You’re already looking pretty messed up.”
Just as those words left his lips, Crawley’s instincts kicked in. A shadow loomed behind him, one of the enhanced Werewolves had appeared, and it was massive. Towering over Crawley, its muscles were swollen and dense, its presence terrifying.
Crawley reacted in an instant. He spun around, his hardened feather blade swinging toward the Werewolf’s thick forearms.
The blade struck, but didn’t pierce. The weapon simply bounced off, failing to make a dent. The Werewolf didn’t flinch, and its arm didn’t even budge.
‘How strong is this one?!’ Crawley’s mind raced.
They had expected the Ironfangs to be their biggest problem. But with Ylva’s powers enhancing the Werewolves through her Luna’s Wolf Song, the battlefield had shifted. The enemy’s strength was off the charts.
The monster raised its massive arm, forming a massive fist above Crawley. Injured as he was, Crawley knew he wouldn’t be able to block it in time.
All he could do was lift his feathered wings, hoping to make some kind of makeshift shield. But then, something caught his eye.
A silhouette. A flash of movement. Something familiar.
A war hammer came crashing down from above, meeting the Werewolf’s fist head-on.
A massive wave of energy burst out from the impact, rocking the ground beneath them. The collision shook the air, but it was clear which of the two was stronger.
The Werewolf’s fist was sent flying upward, the entire arm recoiling from the blow.
“Gary!” Numba called out, stunned to see the Alpha standing once again at the entrance of the restaurant. Just moments ago, Gary had been laid out on the ground.
The enhanced Werewolf, of course, wasn’t done. Empowered by Ylva’s Wolf Song, its healing factor kicked in, and it prepared for another attack.
This time, it launched a fist directly at Gary, who no longer held the hammer in his hand. But Gary was already on the move.
He leapt up, allowing the attack to strike the earth below him, then landed on the beast’s extended arm.
In a flash, the war hammer materialized in his hand again, and Gary swung it downward with full force.
The weapon struck the Werewolf’s hand, and a blinding blue energy surged through the hammer.
The attack caused the Werewolf’s fist to violently rupture. Flesh was torn apart. Bones shattered into fragments. It looked like the hand had been savagely removed, yet only the portion marked with cursed energy had been affected.
Without pause, Gary spun and slammed the hammer into the Werewolf’s gut, sending the hulking creature flying back down the hill.
He knew it wasn’t over. That thing would get back up. But for now, it was out of the fight.
“What are you doing here?!” Numba shouted as he ran toward him.
Gary didn’t answer right away. He was pacing his breathing, trying to remain composed. In battle, he was doing his best to use the war hammer strategically, minimizing how much Qi he used. The weapon added immense power to his strikes naturally, and using its unique abilities was the most efficient way to fight.
Thanks to the passive benefits from his class, his energy was slowly regenerating, even at night.
Still, explosive attacks like the last one drained a heavy amount of energy.
These Werewolves, they weren’t letting up. Their aggression didn’t stop, and Gary knew he would need every ounce of power he had to hold this ground.
Especially here.
This was the meeting point for their forces. If the other groups were struggling like Crawley’s, then it was only a matter of time before even more Werewolves gathered in the area.
“Weren’t you fighting against Ylva?” Crawley asked while slicing down another attacker. “How are you here already?”
He didn’t want to seem ungrateful, especially not after that save. But the question was fair.
Even as they talked, the battlefield was still intense. They had to fight non-stop to keep the Werewolves at bay.
Despite Gary’s arrival, a few of the creatures managed to slip through the line. Some burst into the restaurant, forcing a few Altereds to break rank and chase after them to help the Howlers still inside.
“Blake came,” Gary replied firmly. “He’s dealing with Ylva now.”
“You sure you don’t want to go fight her together?” Crawley asked. “Maybe with the two of you, you’d have a shot!”
That might have been true, if Gary were at full strength. But he wasn’t. He could tell from how he handled the hammer that he was still learning. He wouldn’t be able to give it his all.
And more importantly, he had seen the look in Blake’s eyes.
This wasn’t just a fight to Blake.
This was his battle.
Gary respected that. Blake wanted to face Ylva himself, and Gary knew he needed to be here, protecting the others.
“Blake will deal with it,” Gary said. “I trust him.”
