Chapter 1626: Don’t Get Caught
Chapter 1626: Don’t Get Caught
A plan had been set. A real one this time, not just vague ideas tossed around in the courtyard, but an actual structured approach to investigating the three suspicious areas. They had finally agreed that splitting up was the only efficient way to uncover answers, even if the idea made Gary and Lupus uneasy. Still, with Jack as guarded and unpredictable as he’d appeared lately, the only time they could safely investigate was while he was not present.
That meant teamwork. Coordination. And timing.
All things they weren’t exactly masters at...but they were willing to try.
“So you remember, right?” Kai asked as the three of them walked around the main square, having just finished eating some food from one of the nearby shops located on the bottom floor of the curved building.
Kai repeated the plan again, as if making sure both of them were actually listening this time.
“I’ll go and track down Jack and see why he leaves the city,” he said. “You, Gary, are to investigate his house. And Lupus, you’ll check the forge, find a way in at night, and figure out why it’s been closed earlier these days.”
Gary and Lupus both nodded, their expressions serious. They knew their roles. They understood the risks. But now all they could do was wait for the signal. Jack didn’t leave at the exact same time every day, but he left every day without fail, and that was enough to prepare for.
Meanwhile, inside the tower office, another conversation was taking place.
“Galdark,” Jack said as he stood from his seat, stretching his tired limbs. “I will be heading into the city as usual. If there are any problems while I’m away, I’ll leave them to you.”
He began to walk toward the door, steps heavy, but before he could leave, Galdark called after him.
“Jack... if there was anything you needed help with,” Galdark said carefully, “I’m a shoulder you can lean on. The entire Red Wing Kingdom has leaned on you and the Hero’s shoulders for a long time after he left... you can rest a bit.”
Jack paused at the doorway.
For a moment, his expression hardened, shoulders stiff, eyes distant.
“I know,” Jack answered quietly, “but there are some things in this world we need to do ourselves.”
And with that, he left.
Galdark lowered his head. It wasn’t the answer he had hoped for. It was exactly what he had feared. Jack wasn’t just acting strange, he was hiding something, carrying something heavy on his own.
And that meant Galdark had no choice but to go behind his leader’s back... something he hated more than anything.
Once Jack descended the tower steps, Galdark moved through the halls quickly, exiting to one of the balconies overlooking the courtyard. He lifted his hand in the air.
It was the signal.
Down in the centre, Gary, Lupus, and Kai spotted it almost immediately.
“It’s time,” Kai said.
He moved first, his steps quick but fluid as he disappeared toward one of the exits leading into the main city. It wasn’t like there were guards blocking the way, anyone could walk in or out of the Werewolf district, but they were observed. Newcomers were tracked, movements noted. It was for safety, both for the pack and the city.
Which was why Galdark had to be there.
While Kai moved, Galdark headed down to the entrance as well. He approached the watchful Werewolves who kept track of those entering and leaving and quickly created an excuse.
“There’s been a large mess in one of the kitchens,” he said. “A scuffle. People are hurt, and they need help cleaning it up. I’ll stay here and keep watch for now.”
The guards nodded and hurried away.
That left Galdark alone at the exit, exactly what they needed.
Kai slipped out from behind one of the pillars, unseen, moving toward Galdark with a stealthiness that only a former shadowy troublemaker like him could pull off.
But the moment Kai got close, Galdark pinched his nose.
“Man, you really smell!” Galdark said, lifting a hand in disgust. “But... it’s clearly working. I can’t smell you at all. Just that damned fruit.”
Kai resisted the urge to gag. He could smell it too. The stench was so overpowering that even he felt sick. The others had refused to stand beside him for more than five seconds.
Hanging around Kai’s neck like some cursed necklace was the strongest-smelling fruit known to their world: Durain.
In the modern era, they would have used a specialized scent-masking spray to hide their Werewolf smell. But here, that didn’t exist. They had to improvise. Durain was their only option, a fruit so potent it could overpower even a Werewolf’s heightened senses.
If Kai was going to follow Jack closely, he had to mask his scent thoroughly.
Unfortunately... there was a small problem.
The smell was now so strong that if Jack noticed it, he might wonder why the entire area suddenly stunk of rotting fruit. That suspicion alone could ruin everything.
“We’re just going to have to gamble that this works,” Kai said, adjusting the makeshift necklace with an expression of pure suffering. He knew exactly what Galdark was thinking. “We’ll find out what’s going on with Jack. I’ll do my best not to get caught.”
Galdark placed a hand on Kai’s shoulder, offering the barest nod, a gesture of trust and worry.
Kai nodded back, then turned and headed after Jack, who had already begun making his way through the city streets.
As Kai disappeared into the shadows of the outer district, Galdark whispered just loud enough for him to hear:
“Just... don’t get caught.”
