Chapter 1904 - 987: Mercy (5)
...
...
Taking advantage of the War Robots going off to deal with the Hundred-Eyed Demon, Jindai Yunlo, Wang Xiaojiu, and the entire Qing Air Force Fleet all pulled out in a hurry; nobody wanted to just die out here in the middle of nowhere.
The trump card King Roosevelt had paid for with his life was definitely not something they could beat just by shouting a few slogans. If they really stayed to fight to the bitter end, there wouldn’t even be bone fragments left of them.
The group scrambled over mountains and ridges, and Li Dongze pushed everyone forward with currents of air, helping them pick up speed.
On Ye Wan’s back, Jindai Yunlo was yelling encouragement, while March took out a tiny hand drum and began beating it in rhythm.
The moment they heard the drum, everyone ran like they’d just mainlined chicken blood, sprinting like crazy as if they had endless strength.
Wang Xiaojiu stared, wide-eyed. "You people in the Contraindicated courts sure are loaded with treasures. What are the containment conditions on that hand drum?"
"You tell me first, what are the containment conditions for that Guillotine Long Knife, and what does it do?" March shot back.
"Nothing worth hiding, really. Over on the West Continent this thing’s called the Blade of Judgment," Wang Xiaojiu said. "Containment condition is, you have to do one good deed every single day. As for what it does... it judges the guilty. If you hack a pure person, it turns into a phantom and slips past their body. If you hack a sinner, it becomes unimaginably sharp. But the weird part is, it doesn’t judge words or actions, it judges the heart. So pretty much everyone it cuts ends up dead."
As the saying goes, judge by deeds not by heart, because no one’s heart is spotless. Who doesn’t have a bit of darkness inside? If this Guillotine judges the inner self, then everyone is eligible to be judged.
March asked, "Has anyone ever escaped its judgment?"
"There has, and only one," Wang Xiaojiu said. "Legend has it the first Giant Prophet once slipped away from under its blade."
March said, "I traded this hand drum from Fire Pit. The containment condition is simple: as long as it’s a woman, she can beat it. Once it’s played, everyone who hears it gets super pumped up."
Wang Xiaojiu: "This drum of yours is kind of indecent, you know."
March hesitated a moment. "Have you ever used the Blade of Judgment on yourself?"
"No. I don’t really dare," Wang Xiaojiu admitted.
Gradually, everyone’s mouths were frothing at the corners from running, falling far behind the Qing Clan Fleet, and the War Robots were about to catch up.
Lin Xiaoxiao yelled, "We’re never gonna outrun those robots at this rate!"
Jindai Yunlo cut in, "Wait, I feel like I’ve forgotten something. I can fly!"
The next second, a white Azure Dragon manifested, and everyone vaulted onto its back as it soared into the sky.
Sitting astride Bai Rongyi’s spine, Lin Xiaoxiao cursed at the top of her lungs. "You did that on purpose! With a shikigami like this, and you didn’t summon it earlier?"
"My bad, my bad, I’ve only been blind for a little while, my head’s a bit of a mess, I forgot," Jindai Yunlo said with a squinty smile.
The white Azure Dragon carried them to the side of the Qing Clan Fleet, flying shoulder to shoulder with the flagship.
Through the glass, Jindai Sorajima swore furiously. "Jindai Yunlo, you scumbag, you ditched us to act alone again, you—"
Then she saw Jindai Yunlo turning his closed eyes in her direction, and the two dried tracks of bloody tears still unwashed from his cheeks.
Jindai Sorajima couldn’t get another word out.
The noble young lord of the North had become a maimed man.
The little girl who used to trail behind him through streets and alleys like a shadow felt something stuck in her throat.
As if guessing what Sorajima was thinking, Jindai Yunlo smiled and comforted her, "It’s okay. Every one of my shikigami is a pair of eyes for me."
Jindai Sorajima couldn’t hear what he was saying; she just felt a dull ache in her chest.
The Qing Clan Fleet pushed ahead at full speed, but the War Robots behind were getting closer and closer. Airships were never built for speed, and now they could only watch helplessly as the gap shrank.
The Hundred-Eyed Demon had already turned into a streak of light and flown back to the Divine Bridge to recuperate; they no longer had anything that could stall the enemy.
In the hangar, the adjutant said, "Commander, let the Pioneer Corps intercept them and buy time. We should retreat!"
Qing Kun looked at him. "My son is still at Jian Menguan. If we retreat, what happens to him?"
In Qing Kun’s view, at a truly critical moment everyone else could be left aside—but what about Qing Yi? He knew he might choose to retreat, yet as long as the Parents’ Meeting hadn’t successfully broken through Jian Menguan, Qing Yi would definitely not pull back.
"Get a message through to Jian Menguan. Tell them the West Continent has played a trump card you’d only see on a real battlefield, and tell them to help the Parents’ Meeting pull out as fast as possible," Qing Kun said.
The adjutant asked, "What about us then?"
"We die here, what else?" Qing Kun lounged lazily in the command chair, even lighting himself a cigar.
Up on the white Azure Dragon, everyone saw the Qing Clan Fleet suddenly turn about, facing the distant War Machine Robots Cluster.
Not a single ship broke off to flee; every last one stayed neatly in formation.
No one shouted any stirring slogans, but that perfectly synchronized maneuver shook them to the core.
Lin Xiaoxiao said, "How about we stay too?"
Wang Xiaojiu reached up to neaten her ponytail, gathering the loose strands of hair together. "The atmosphere’s already built up this far; if we keep running now it’s just wrong. It’s a stupid call, sure, but we’ve been hanging around with you idiots this long—acting stupid once in a while is only natural."
Lin Xiaoxiao: "You don’t have to insult us while you’re at it..."
Standing upright on the Azure Dragon’s spine, Wang Xiaojiu leveled the Long Knife at the War Robots, the blade in her hand like a battle flag snapping in the wind.
