Chapter 2237 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 25
The human generals and leaders of various teams were struggling to keep up with the defence against the goblins but it seems like they were managing pretty well considering the numbers that they have.
While they internally mourned the death of their comrades who had decidedly put their lives down to be on the frontlines, there was nothing else that they could do but to continue to put faith that they could hold onto as long as they could.
In the meantime, the various generals had petitioned the king of Ends to at the very least start evacuating the citizens out of the city. "There is no place for your people to die unnecessarily." One of the generals said through a magic communication crystal as the battle rages on at the front gates. "I honestly suggest that you start moving them through the northern tunnels and into the Ends Forest towards Ress."
"I agreed to it too. The tunnels are not as far as we expected despite our best to dig at the moment's notice but they should give some safe distance away from the current fighting." Another general commented.
"You are telling the people of Ends to flee? That is equivalent to deserting!" Another General argued, apparently still ignorantly blissed not knowing about the situation at the outer walls because he was stationed within the inner walls.
"The walls might not even hold till the night. We wil-"
"You guys will hold. We are the elites of the elites from various Southern Kingdom Alliance." The haughty general said and soon, everyone who was within the chat focused their attention, only to remember that this was a brand new general from Trin. They recalled that he had been winning accolades after accolades in battle and through nepotism that he got his current position.
In fact, even this particular expedition was meant to showcase his prowess but everyone knew that Trin's King was merely doing this to satisfy his relative's whims. Therefore, most of the generals took caution and put him in the inner most portion of the city so that he does not screw up the defence plan that the 'real' generals had cooked.
The King of Ends sighed, knowing that even the General of Trin would be a pain in the ass and thankfully, he was still in charge of the place. "Go ahead with the evacuation. The magic mirror had shown me enough that this was a lost cause. At least give the soldiers some fighting reason that they were doing this in order to allow the citizens to evacuate."
"Are you such a wuss?" Trin General claimed and yet no one bothered to entertain him at this critical juncture. Instead, the mages that were responsible for the broadcast among the military leaders instantly discarded his communication channel.
"As I was saying. Move ahead with the evacuation. I will speak to the King of Ress…" Just as Ends was about to do the very thing he had delayed, suddenly the Demon Horde released multiple foghorn signals. From his perspective, the monsters cheered for no reason and they started to rush while screaming in their own battle cry.
"What is happening!?" The King of Ends demanded a situational report at the moment and none but just one of the generals returned the reply.
"The Demon Horde seemed to be advancing like a stampede! They are not waiting anymore! The lines are moving!" The General exclaimed before communications were cut off abruptly and the King of Ends was left with just that titbit of information for him to make any decision.
Thus, he had decided to aid with reinforcing the message that needed to be said. To evacuate the people of Ends into Ress regardless of the pride he had in him. The king of Ends felt that if he were to stay nonchalant, his people would die so they might as well give a hand in trying to escape into Ress. If Ress were to shoot them, at the very least they were still able to survive just another few days, to struggle for their lives rather than to be killed so indiscriminately by monsters.
Hence, with such a heavy heart and much hesitation within him, the King of Ends finally decided to give a call to Jin after relaying all of his royal messengers to spread the orders to evacuate.
The mage who started up the communication crystal took some time to get it working as the mana disruption was quite significant after the advent of those foghorn calls. They knew the call had connected but no one on the other end was receiving it which made the King of Ends anxious and it was not until the tenth attempt that they managed to have a choppy video image coming from their side of the crystal. "What do you want?" Jin questioned as he looked rather pissed that the King of Ends did not stop the calling.
"King of Ress, we beseeched your assistance for the matter that you had warned us previously." The king felt that his heart was trembling as he talked to Jin.
"Not happening," Jin replied with a straight face. "You pointed your army at me for quite a long time. I am not going to-"
"No. I am not asking you for help with the Demon Horde. I am asking if you are able to protect my helpless citizens in evacuation to your side of the kingdom as a refuge?"
"Why should I? What is there to gain from such an endeavour?" Jin asked, now with his hands folded.
"Please, I implore you for such a matter. You have experience in battling the demons more than us and from what I heard from my scouts is that you are able to keep them at bay. The military and I would stay behind to buy as much time for our citizens. That is all I ask for. I will get a military escort to send you crates full of gold as a reward."
"And for what use? The Southern Kingdom alliance had been destroyed by the Demons, what use do I have with your gold? I have my own currency and do not even require those useless coins of yours." Jin retorted and it looked like the King of Ends needed to put out something more valuable to catch Ress's attention.
Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be of use or help to Ress when they had everything under the sun. So, the only thing the King of Ends could do was to swallow whatever remaining pride he had and place his head on the ground to plead for help.
"I beg you." That were the only three words that came out of his mouth with much difficulty.
