Chapter 113.1: Du Kehui’s Death (1)
When Du Yunhan saw the two people who came out, his eyes narrowed slightly. He recognized one as someone who used to serve Zhong Meiqing but had later disappeared– Zhong Meiqing said she had married someone. There was another person he didn’t recognize, but Zhong Meiqing knew that she was the midwife who had delivered her baby back then.
The midwife was blind, so she had to rely on Xia Yuan for support as she walked forward.
“Second Madam, you should recognize these two people, right? This is your former maid, and this old woman was your midwife back in the day. You had her carry out some matters for you, yet when she completed them, you sent someone to poison her. But it was not her time to go– she was only blinded and her life was saved,” Du Xiaoli said. “When my people looked into the events of back then, they found that these two were still alive. All the others had been dealt with by you, one by one, after your child was born. Seeing them, is it all coming back to you?”
“Tell us what you know of what happened back then,” Du Yunhan commanded.
Everyone else seemed to be quite interested in Du Yunhan's family matters as well– no one had the intention of continuing fighting.
“Master, this servant served as the laundry maid in Madam's courtyard back then, so Madam's things were all washed by this servant. Master, at that time, was drunk in the Madam’s courtyard. When the bed sheets were bloodied, it was this servant’s responsibility to clean up. Although this servant was not very old at that time, I also heard people saying some things– that one look at that blood stain showed something wasn’t right.” That old lady recalled. “Generally, the blood after intercourse is splattered, but the blood on the sheet was stained in a perfect circle. At a glance, one could tell it had been purposefully smeared on.”
“Everything you said is true?” Du Yunhan asked with a sullen face, threatening, “If you are talking nonsense, I will definitely not spare you!”
“Master, what this servant said is all true!” That old maidservant said, “Moreover, those days were exactly that period of Madam's menstrual cycle– everyone knows that it's impossible to get pregnant if you have intercourse during that time. What's more… what's more is Master wasn’t even sharing a room with Madam yet.”
Du Xiaoli helped the blind midwife over and said, “Granny, tell us what happened back then.”
“Eh, okay.” The blind midwife said, “Back then, I went to the Du Mansion to help deliver the baby. Because it was the Empress' own sister, I was extra careful, afraid of what I might do wrong. But the worst thing I did that day was to say the wrong thing. It was that day, thirteen years ago when I was brought to the Du residence to help Master Du’s Second Madam give birth…”
The blind midwife slowly recounted the scene back then.
“Aiya, hurry up, the Second Madam has been in pain for quite a while.” The person who came to her urged, “If the midwife prepared by the mansion hadn't gotten sick in the past two days, we wouldn’t have had to resort to you midwifes from outside!”
The midwife followed a maid, rushing towards Zhong Meiqing's courtyard. She originally thought that she had found a big customer, but she didn't realize that this would be the nightmare of her life.
“Madam, push! Push! I can already see the head ......”
“Madam, it's the last bit, push!”
“Wahhh wahhh wahhh–”
Soon, a little boy came into the world.
The midwife picked up the little boy, swaddling him in the prepared cloth, and said, “Congratulations Madam, congratulations Madam, it's a young master. The young master is in good health and looks almost like a full-term baby.”
The midwife didn't know that her words had sealed her own fate.
“Alright, you've worked hard, go down and get your reward.” An old nanny on the side said, winking towards the maids in the room after the midwife turned around.
It was because this child of Zhong Meiqing's was said to not be full-term, having been born prematurely due to a fall. But the midwife said it was the same as a full-term one, so naturally, she couldn’t be left alive.
After the midwife finished talking about that year's events, she said, “That was the last time I delivered a baby for someone else, and I almost lost my life because of it, so I naturally remembered the events of that year very clearly. That little boy back then, was full-term, not just seven or eight months as everyone claimed.”
“Thank you both. Xia Yuan, send them to the house and have someone keep them safe.” Du Xiaoli instructed, then looked at Zhong Meiqing and said, “Second Madam, do you have anything else to cover up?”
