Chapter 350: Paul’s Critical Situation

Chapter 350: Paul’s Critical Situation

I caught up to Mira. She moved with a reckless urgency, her boots crushing twigs and leaves beneath her, her breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps.

I grabbed her arm, my fingers digging in just enough to force her to stop. My voice was sharp, laced with a mix of frustration and false concern.

"How can you be so damn dumb?!" I snapped, my grip tightening as I spun her to face me. "Are you actually trying to get yourself killed?! Do you have any idea what’s out here?!"

Mira’s eyes burned with a mix of fury and desperation as she yanked her arm free. "What the hell are you doing here, Dexter?!" she demanded, her voice trembling but fierce. "This doesn’t concern you!"

I smirked, my tone dripping with mock worry. "Oh, but it does. I can’t have my future slave throwing her life away before I even get to enjoy her obedience, now can I?"

Mira’s face twisted in disgust, her voice low and venomous. "I will never be your slave. Never."

I rolled my eyes, my smirk never fading. "Okay, fine, whatever you say. But can you at least try not to act like an idiot?" I gestured wildly toward the dense foliage, my voice rising.

"That thing out there isn’t some house cat you can shoo away with a broom! It’s a lion—a monster—and even with a gun, it’s not going to be easy to take down! You’re just going to get yourself torn apart!"

Mira didn’t listen. She turned away, her jaw set, her body tense with determination. I exhaled sharply, shaking my head, but I followed. We didn’t have to go far before the clearing came into view—and with it, the grim sight of Paul’s broken body.

He was slumped against the dirt, his leg a mangled mess, blood still oozing from the jagged wound. His face was ashen, his breathing shallow and uneven. He was unconscious, but the rise and fall of his chest told me he was still clinging to life—barely.

Mira dropped to her knees beside him, her hands already moving to unbutton her jacket. My eyes narrowed. No. Absolutely not. If she took that off, she’d be left in nothing but her bra, and with the way my body reacted to her, I’d lose control in an instant and fuck her on the spot. I couldn’t let that happen. Not here. Not now.

I lunged forward, my hand closing around her wrist before she could undo another button. "Here," I said sharply, already shrugging out of my own jacket. I thrust it into her hands, my voice leaving no room for argument. "Take this. Use it."

Mira hesitated, her eyes flicking between me and the jacket. For a second, I thought she might refuse, but then she snatched it, her fingers moving quickly to bind Paul’s wound.

The fabric darkened almost instantly, soaked through with blood, but the bleeding slowed. Paul’s chest rose and fell weakly, his pulse faint, his skin clammy and pale.

Meanwhile, I found the gun which was dropped by Paul... so I took it...

Mira’s voice was barely a whisper, thick with dread. "He’s lost too much blood... He’s not going to make it if we don’t get him help..."

I crossed my arms, my expression cold, almost indifferent. "He’s beyond saving, Mira. Leave him here. We need to go back."

Mira’s head snapped up, her eyes blazing with fury. "You’re just a coward," she hissed, her voice shaking with rage. "A pussy who’s too scared to do what’s right!"

I just smiled, nodding along like her words didn’t even phase me. "Yeah, yeah, you’re right," I said, my tone dripping with sarcasm.

"But you know what? I’m sure I’ll survive longer here, even if I am a coward and a pussy. Unlike someone who’s always running toward death like it’s some kind of romantic tragedy."

Mira’s hands clenched into fists, her voice breaking. "What do you know?! My family is still out there! Jack and Bill—they ran in different directions to distract that lion! I don’t know if they’re okay! I don’t know if they’re—" Her voice cracked, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

I sighed, my tone softening just enough to sound almost reasonable. "Your husband’s a pilot, right? He’s got survival training. Basic first aid, navigation, all that. He’s not some helpless idiot. He’ll be fine."

I gestured toward the darkening sky, where the sun was beginning its descent, casting long, ominous shadows across the ground. "The sun’s going to set soon, Mira. What’s your plan? You’re going to wander around in the dark, calling out for them like some kind of bait? Because that’s a great way to get yourself eaten."

Mira swallowed hard, my words seeming to ease the panic in her eyes just slightly. But I could see the stubborn set of her jaw, the way her shoulders squared. She wasn’t backing down. "I’m finding them," she said, her voice firm.

I watched as she gently shifted Paul, propping him up against the trunk of a nearby tree. His head lolled to the side, his breathing shallow, his skin slick with sweat. She adjusted the jacket around his leg, her movements careful despite the desperation in her eyes.

I exhaled sharply, my mind racing. Fine. If she wanted to play the hero, I’d let her. But I wasn’t about to let her ruin my plans.

I’d follow. I’d watch. And when the time was right, I’d make my move.

Mira stopped abruptly, her shoulders squaring as she turned to face me. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her voice raw but resolute. "You can go back," she said, gesturing toward Paul’s unconscious form. "Carry him to the base. I’ll find my family."

I didn’t even hesitate. I shook my head, my tone flat and unyielding. "I won’t carry him. Let him die. He’s none of my concern." I stepped closer, my gaze locking onto hers, my voice dropping to a low, deliberate growl. "You, Mira, are my only concern."

Her expression twisted, a mix of disgust and fury flashing across her face. "You’re such a heartless bastard," she spat, her voice trembling with rage. She turned back to Paul, her voice softening, her words laced with guilt and sorrow.

"I’m sorry, Paul... I can’t help you right now." Her fingers brushed his shoulder, her touch fleeting.

"I need to find Jack and Bill. Thank you... for everything." Her voice cracked, and she swallowed hard, her eyes glistening. "If something happens to you before I return... I want you to know that I’ll take care of Hailey. I promise."
