Chapter 751: Rachel Against My Shoulder
Chapter 751: Rachel Against My Shoulder
Victoria went inside the bamboo house to rest, but Rachel remained seated by the fire.
"I... I’ll also stay out here," she said quietly. "I don’t feel sleepy at all."
Victoria glanced at her, then at me, and simply nodded before disappearing into the shelter.
Now it was just the two of us outside. The fire crackled softly between us, sending small sparks up into the dark sky. The sound of the waves in the distance felt louder now that the others were gone.
I looked at Rachel. Her expression was a little downcast, shoulders slightly hunched as she stared into the flames. Her fingers were tightly clasped together in her lap.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
Rachel gave a small hum and nodded, though it didn’t look entirely convincing. After a moment, she spoke again, her voice low and a bit fragile.
"Do you think the rescue will come tomorrow?"
I shook my head slightly.
"I don’t know. Maybe. They must be searching for us by now... the plane’s flight path, the last known coordinates. Someone will eventually find this island. We just need to survive until then."
Rachel let out another quiet "hmm." She pulled her knees a little closer to her chest, the leaf skirt shifting with the movement. For a while she didn’t say anything else, but I could see the tension in her posture.
After a longer silence, she spoke again, even quieter than before.
"...I’m a little afraid," she admitted. "Not just about being stuck here. I keep thinking about my family. My parents... and my younger brother. They don’t even know what happened yet. If the news reaches them that the plane went missing..." Her voice wavered slightly. "My mother worries a lot. And my brother is still in high school. I don’t want them to be scared."
She stared into the fire, the orange light reflecting in her eyes.
"I’ve always been the one who takes care of things at home when I’m there. Being the older sister... I’m not used to being the one who needs protecting. Sitting here not knowing when we’ll be found... it makes me feel helpless."
I spoke in a steadier, more reassuring tone.
"Don’t worry. I promise I’ll keep you safe until help arrives. You’re not alone here, and you’re not a burden."
Rachel finally looked up at me. After a moment, she nodded, a faint but genuine light of determination returning to her eyes even though a trace of fear still lingered.
"I’ll also try not to become a burden... to you or to anyone else. I’ll do my best to help however I can. I just... I hope my family doesn’t have to suffer worrying about me for too long."
The fire continued to burn steadily between us, pushing back a little of the night’s darkness while the two of us kept watch outside the bamboo house. The distant sound of the waves filled the quiet spaces between our words.
After a while, Rachel shifted closer. She moved from her spot and sat right beside me, then gently rested her head against my shoulder. Her voice was soft when she spoke.
"Thank you, Dexter... Without you, I don’t think any of us would have survived this long. The bamboo shelter, the fire, even what happened with Boss’s snake bite... If you weren’t here, we wouldn’t have known what to do. I’ve been trying to stay strong, but it’s hard not to feel scared when everything is so uncertain."
I glanced down at her and spoke in a calm, steady tone, trying to lift some of the weight from her shoulders.
"You’ve already been strong enough. Most people would have completely broken down after a plane crash and ending up on an unknown island."
’’You’re still here, still thinking about your family, still trying not to burden anyone. That takes more courage than you give yourself credit for."
Rachel was quiet for a moment, then added in an even lower voice, almost shyly,
"If you want... we can date when we go back."
I gave a small nod, a faint smile tugging at my lips.
"Yeah. But we don’t have to wait until we go back to start. We can have our date right here."
Rachel lifted her head slightly, clearly surprised.
"Here...? On this island?"
I nodded again.
"Why not? Don’t you think this is kind of romantic in its own way? Living on an island together, no offices, no deadlines, no Boss giving you extra work... Just think of it as a slightly extreme trip you went on with your boyfriend. The kind of story people would be jealous of later."
Rachel stared at me for a second, still processing the idea. Then a soft, disbelieving chuckle escaped her.
"A boyfriend who builds bamboo houses in under a minute and starts fires with sticks... Yeah, that would definitely make people jealous."
I decided to push the lighter mood a bit further and leaned in slightly with a playful tone.
"Exactly. And when we get back, you can tell everyone that your first date included a private island, a handmade leaf outfit, and a man who almost got bitten by the same snake as your Boss. Very exclusive experience. Limited seats available."
Rachel couldn’t hold back a genuine laugh this time. The sound was soft but bright, cutting through the heavy atmosphere that had been hanging over her since the crash. She covered her mouth lightly with one hand, shoulders shaking just a little as the tension finally loosened.
"That’s terrible," she said between quiet laughs. "You’re making our plane crash sound like some kind of luxury package."
I smiled, glad to see her expression lighten.
"Hey, I’m just trying to reframe the situation. Survival edition romance package. Includes complimentary trauma and questionable leaf fashion."
Rachel laughed again, a little louder this time, and shook her head while still leaning against my shoulder.
Inside the bamboo house, Maya had been lying down with her eyes closed, but the sound of Rachel’s genuine laughter reached her clearly through the thin walls. Her brows furrowed slightly in the dark.
A sharp, unexpected pang of irritation mixed with something closer to jealousy flickered through her chest.
[She’s laughing... that freely? With him?]
[Just a while ago I was the one he was... and now he’s out there making her laugh like that...]
[Why does it bother me so much...?]
Maya turned onto her side, facing the wall, but she could still hear the soft conversation and occasional quiet laughter coming from the fire outside. The feeling in her chest only grew heavier.
