Chapter 1108: Playful Fox
Chapter 1108: Playful Fox
The fox wiggled her fingers, all innocence.
"I can’t hear you~" she announced, far too pleased with herself.
The vein bulged first.
A thick, throbbing cord right at the temple of Black Fang’s otherwise porcelain-doll face, pulsing with the kind of rage only centuries of grudges could ferment. She looked carved from ice, but that vein betrayed the inferno bubbling inside her heart.
Yoruha, naturally, was delighted.
"My, my~" she purred, her long white ears popping back into existence and flapping excitedly like banners in a playful breeze. "That vein looks serious, dear. Do you take care of your health? You wouldn’t want to die before me, now would you?"
The foxkin paused, no longer walking circles around Black Fang, and tilted her head to the side with mock realization. Her tails were swishing slyly behind her butt. "Oh, I forgot...! You will die before me, won’t you? Any day now, nasty little wrinkles might start plaguing that delicate face of yours... while this little old fox will still be turning heads even a million years later."
She gasped, clutching her chest as if struck by grief. "What a tragedy!"
Black Fang’s voice slipped out like frostbite.
"My home was invaded and destroyed."
"!" The fox gasped theatrically, clutching her chest with both hands. "Destroyed? Oh, how truly unfortunate. You have my sincerest condolences."
Despite the sincere words, her eyes glittered with mockery, her tails swishing in smug delight. Her tone and body language ensured that all understood perfectly well how happy she was to receive this news.
Black Fang didn’t flinch. "It was easy to find."
"Mm, mm, mm." Yoruha placed both hands on her hips, shaking her head with pretend devastation. "Truly, a tragedy. If only there was someone you knew, someone eternally youthful, sexy, and far too big a genius, someone brilliant with illusions... who could’ve helped you with that."
She widened her eyes with innocence, tapping her chin. "But alas, what a shame. You don’t seem to know such a person."
The hand wrapped around Black Fang’s katana trembled, as violet sparks began licking across the blade. Her tone was flat, but heavy with barely-reined fury.
"I propose we continue this conversation a couple of miles away."
"Nooo~" Yoruha giggled. "I’m too comfortable here. It’s such a lovely home."
Then, as if to twist the knife further, she stretched her arms high above her head, arching her back in an infuriatingly languid display before letting out a long, airy yawn. It was the kind of yawn that managed to be both cute and alluring.
With a flick of her wrist, she waved at Black Fang like one might shoo away a bothersome guest. "You can leave now, though. I’m feeling sleepy."
She returned to her bed and sprawled out lazily, eyes turning half-lidded, her voice dipped into a honey-sweet purr as she added, "Run along, little fang. I’ll continue bothering you once I wake up."
Black Fang stared at the foxkin who now fully closed her eyelids for a long, dangerous second. Her grip on the blade was outright dangerous. But then... her gaze shifted.
First, to Quinlan, who stood still with a dry expression. He didn’t appreciate the old fox poking the bear, but at the same time, he couldn’t really fault her for doing so, either, considering their shared history. РἈNóBЁꞩ
Then, her eyes moved further, sliding to Vex.
The disciple stiffened and immediately began whistling and looking at her feet like she had suddenly discovered it to be the most fascinating thing in existence.
Black Fang’s voice was a quiet, poisonous dagger. "Was there anything else you ’forgot’ to report to me, disciple?"
"... M-maybe a thing or two...?" Vex muttered weakly under her breath, voice barely above a whisper.
Black Fang’s eyes darkened further. The air thickened.
Vex’s whistling grew louder, more desperate, as if the off-key tune could shield her from the wrath of her master. But it didn’t stop Black Fang’s steps. Each one was deliberate, heavy with poisonous intent, until she stood directly in front of her disciple.
Vex forced herself to look up. Her crimson eyes shone with defiance. "I am loyal to you, Master. But I am loyal to my husband as well! I didn’t reveal the greatest secrets of either side to the other! This is how I could make it work!"
"..."
For a moment, silence ruled. Black Fang’s hand rested on the hilt of her blade, but she did not draw it. Her stare lingered, cutting into Vex like steel. Then, slowly, her grip loosened. Without a word of punishment, she turned away and began to walk back.
"I gave your relationship my blessing. It can’t be helped."
Vex brightened instantly, her lips curling into the warmest grin she had ever aimed at her master. "Thank you for understanding!"
Quinlan, however, was less impressed. He turned his head, shooting a final wry glance at Yoruha. But the ancient fox was already sprawled across her bed, snoring cutely as if none of this had ever happened.
Instead, his eyes fell on Celeste. Unlike her master, the maid looked wholly apologetic, her expression flat yet her intent clear as she bowed deeply. The blonde foxkin understood that a chaotic clash almost occurred in his home due to Yoruha deciding to be playful. If not for Black Fang seemingly maturing a great deal since she last saw the human woman, Celeste didn’t doubt that his home would’ve at least been partially damaged.
Quinlan sighed in response to her deep bow before finally turning to follow after the women.
Vex ran up to her master and began chirping happily into her ear as she introduced the place she now called home, while Kitsara and Seraphiel waited for Quinlan to catch up before the pair of women moved to either of his sides and held his hand.
"Crisis successfully averted!" Seraphiel laughed, though it was clear she felt a great deal of relief.
"For now," Kitsara added.
...
With Black Fang moving toward the buildings of the stronghold, numerous surprises awaited the woman, as well as its residents. Most notably...
"Jiai, when is Lord Black finally returning? I haven’t seen him in a while!" Princess Felicity Valorian decreed.
