Chapter 1991: Savage Seraphiel
Chapter 1991: Savage Seraphiel
What they’d done just now was an unforgivable crime, and they’d pay. That was what his mana told them.
Andre could feel that malice crawling over his skin between the strikes. Even the fading sparks carried a hatred so savage that he flinched from them, clutching his sword against his chest while his teeth rattled together.
Beside the wall, Seraphiel looked past the lightning toward her husband, her cheeks warming as another bolt drove Andre back from her.
"Even now, you’re protecting me..."
He had a cavern full of monsters in front of him, yet the moment Andre raised his sword at her, Quinlan’s fury had reached across it. Affection swelled in her chest at the sight of him fighting for her without even breaking from his own battle.
"You wonderful man," she murmured, smiling helplessly as she drew a second dagger from her light and twirled both blades around her fingers.
A groan at her feet drew her gaze down. Marielle had managed to push herself onto one elbow beside the wall, blood running from her nose as she tried to lift her face.
Seraphiel kicked it straight back into the bloodstained blocks.
*Crunch!*
Leaving the mage crumpled against the wall, the elf began walking toward Andre with a dagger in each hand. Aurora stepped away from the shielded patients to join her.
"Let me join you."
"Sure~"
Crimson marks blazed over both women’s wombs, shining through their clothes as they drew from their husband’s Reservoir. Seraphiel’s blades compressed into jagged dark-edged light; beside her, frost spread through the barrier Aurora wrapped around the Dawnbringer’s body.
The platinum-haired woman held her staff ready, amber eyes fixed on Andre.
"It was a remarkable last-ditch effort," she said. "But I’m afraid your fates have now been sealed for good."
Andre hauled himself to one knee, his sword trembling between them.
"Stay away from her!"
Seraphiel glanced toward Quinlan, her voice turning warm enough to make Andre stare.
"My love, we’ve got these two. Focus on your fight."
The lightning ceased. Beyond the balcony, Quinlan’s water caught the queen beneath her fangs and slammed her head against the ledge.
"Damn you freaks!" Andre shouted then lunged through the sudden opening toward the blonde elf. Aurora’s ice-packed shield caught his sword against Seraphiel’s chest, holding its edge clear of her clothes while the Dawnbringer stepped into his reach.
One dagger hooked his blade aside. With the other, Seraphiel sliced through the straps securing his gauntlet, then drove her knee into his stomach. His sword fell as he doubled over, and a kick behind his knee put him face-first on the floor.
He tried to scramble toward Marielle. A curved barrier rose between them at Aurora’s will, leaving his outstretched hand scraping uselessly against its surface.
The Dawnbringer planted a foot between his shoulders and leaned down, pressing her dagger beneath his ear.
Andre went still, breathing through clenched teeth. Seraphiel held him there while Aurora closed separate shells of ice-lined light over him and his wife. The barriers pinned their limbs and torsos against the paving, leaving their heads exposed.
Only once the barriers held did the blonde woman step off him. She picked up Marielle’s staff and snapped it across her knee, dropping the pieces in front of its dazed owner.
Aurora enclosed Andre’s abandoned sword in an empty shell of light beyond his reach. He watched her return to the patients, unable to lift his hand from the floor.
"I’ll keep an eye on them," she told Seraphiel. "Go have your fun."
"Love you~"
With a delighted laugh, the Dawnbringer ran down the steps, shouting joyously. "Fear not, girls, for Seraphiel Vaelorith Elysiar has entered the fray!"
Aurora opened the outer barrier for her, and the elf lengthened her daggers into twin blades before leaping past Kaelira into the spiders climbing toward the terrace.
From the floor, Marielle caught a blur of blonde hair beyond Aurora’s shield. A spider toppled away from the terrace with light burning through its mouth, and the elf’s laughter reached her through the ringing in her ears. Trying to follow her made the cavern tilt; Marielle shut her eyes and swallowed blood.
The soldiers at the bridge’s lower end were giving ground before another mass emerging from a tunnel. A spear from Seraphiel burst inside the crowded passage, blasting the approaching brood back into the dark.
"There’s another full lot in here!"
"Blossom’s coming!"
Blue-white flashes raced down the wall toward her. The elf drew twin blades from her light and went in after the dogkin, their laughter swallowed by the shrieks inside.
"Nice job!"
"Sera too!!"
Ayame, Serika, and Lucille descended on the tunnel mouths by a ramp Quinlan grew from the terrace. Water tore openings through the packed brood for Serika’s fists, and Lucille met the burning survivors with her axe while Iris and Kaelira held the steps above.
"Gh!"
A hooked leg caught Iris through the shoulder. She dragged its owner onto the terrace and hacked through the joint, pulling its head straight into Kaelira’s crushing fist.
"I had that!"
"There’s another behind you."
Iris tore the hook from her shoulder and hurled it into the next spider’s mouth. Her charge carried her beyond Marielle’s blurred view from the floor, where the mage’s next attempt to lift her head ended with her cheek against the paving.
Across the cavern, the queen’s calls were growing frantic. Each brought fresh bodies into the slaughter and another rush of experience notifications before Quinlan’s eyes.
Scraping the remaining ice from her broken mouth, the queen spat venom at Quinlan. She swept the stream sideways when he rose above it, eating a smoking trench through the wall behind him.
Before she could turn the stream toward the balcony again, Quinlan struck it with a current of water. The mingled torrent crashed onto the spiders climbing to her defence, splashing their upturned faces.
Clawing at its smoking eyes only tore pieces of dissolving shell from the foremost creature’s head.
"Mother!"
The word came from one of the larger spawn, horribly clear through its clicking mouthparts.
Before the queen could reach it, the spawn lost its grip and struck the ledge beneath her. Its screams continued as the venom ate through its face.
Quinlan watched her try to catch the collapsing head between her claws.
"Even your children speak? Fascinating."
"I’ll... peel..."
Abandoning the dying spawn, the queen smashed open the passage behind her and forced her abdomen inside, trampling the brood still answering her summons.
"Away! Move!"
Quinlan compressed the passage around her belly. Her first wrench shattered its mouth, but he drove the pressure deeper into the mountain until her shell split between the closing walls.
*KRRRIEEEEEEAAAH!*
She struck backward with her remaining foreleg. A blade of Quinlan’s wind tore through its ruined joint, and the current following it slammed her face into the ledge, snapping her last fang beneath her weight.
"Your durability is truly impressive. I’ll have to study your chitin at length."
"Back!" the queen shrieked through her broken mouth. "Back, back!"
The brood trying to obey met the ranks still pouring from the tunnels. Legs tangled under the pressure, and her own summons kept driving fresh bodies into the crush.
Quinlan looked down at the cavern floor, where Seraphiel and Blossom were emerging from a tunnel beside his soldiers. He’d let the girls enjoy themselves. Now he wanted a turn.
Quinlan’s wind caught his women around their waists and beneath their legs, plucking them from the terrace, the bridge, and the heaps below. Serika’s next punch swept through empty air as his currents carried them all toward the balcony.
"Hey! I was hitting that!"
He set them down beside Aurora, whose shield opened to receive them. Ayame landed with her katana still dripping, while Lucille caught the laughing dogkin against her side. "What gives, baby? There’s still-"
"Take a quick breather, girls," his words came flat.
"Oh." Lucille’s smile widened. "It’s happening."
"Yeah... It is," Ayame whispered. The Skysplitter was grinning from ear to ear as she observed her lover’s form, a form that was visibly gathering mana at an incredible rate.
It was time to go all out!
