Chapter 3032: Sometimes, People’s Ignorance and Foolishness Are Beyond Imagination
“Just because the woman was a widow and attractive,” the female officer continued, spreading her hands helplessly. “Sometimes, people’s ignorance and foolishness are beyond imagination.”
Ning Shu nodded. “Thank you, really. I appreciate it.”
Though Ning Shu felt she could handle her family, the officer’s kindness warmed her heart.
Reading broadens the mind; knowing the vastness of the universe makes one cherish the simplicity of the grass and trees.
The female officer drove Ning Shu home and stopped at the gate.
Ning Shu got out of the car. Wang Ying’s mother was feeding the chickens. When she saw Ning Shu, she only glanced over briefly before continuing to scatter feed.
She completely ignored Ning Shu.
Wang Ying’s father sat on the threshold smoking a cigarette, his face full of worry.
Wang Chao was probably holed up in his room playing video games.
No one was happy about Ning Shu’s return.Even the female police officer felt a bit awkward. She walked to the chicken coop and said to Wang Ying’s mother, “Wang Ying has been hurt and is dealing with psychological trauma. Please make sure to take extra good care of her during this time.”
Wang Ying’s mother, her eyelids drooping, poured corn from a broken bowl into the chicken coop and scoffed, “After something like this, with the whole village knowing our Wang family has been disgraced, you still want me to provide for her like she’s some kind of deity?”
She clasped her hands together mockingly, as if in prayer, and said with biting sarcasm, “After such a disgraceful incident you even called the police to make sure everyone knew? I can’t believe I gave birth to such a shameless daughter.”
“…” The female police officer suddenly didn’t know what to say. She glanced at Ning Shu helplessly, realizing some things just couldn’t be reasoned with.
These people had their own twisted logic, and they were convinced they were right.
The officer decided not to waste any more energy on Wang Ying’s mother. Instead, she turned to Ning Shu and said, “Don’t let it get to you. Just let it go.”
“This is no different from breaking a leg in a car accident or getting injured in a robbery. You’ll get through it.”
Ning Shu raised her head and smiled at the officer. “Thank you. I understand.”
“Alright, I’m heading out. Call me if anything happens,” the officer said as she opened the car door.
Ning Shu walked up to the car window and asked, “Can I borrow something? A voice recorder.”
The officer pulled a recorder from her uniform pocket. “Here, take it. We use these for investigations, but you can borrow it for now.”
Ning Shu took the recorder, slipped it into her pocket, and said, “Thanks.”
“I’m off now. Let me know if anything comes up.” The officer stepped on the gas and drove away.
Wang Ying’s mother shot Ning Shu a sidelong glance. “You still have the nerve to smile? Don’t you have any shame?”
Ning Shu replied flatly, “None. Not a bit. I must’ve inherited that from you.”
“You wretched girl…” Wang Ying’s mother raised her hand as if to slap Ning Shu.
Ning Shu immediately shouted, “Brother! Dear brother, where are you? Your sister misses you so much!”
Wang Ying’s mother’s expression twisted. Ning Shu walked toward her room, calling out “Dad” as she passed Wang Ying’s father, who was still sitting on the doorstep smoking.
Inside her room, Ning Shu grabbed a bag and started packing the clothes she could still wear.
Once this was all over, she was leaving to start a new life.
Living in this impoverished, backward place, how could the entrustor possibly start a new life?
She wanted to see the world beyond this stagnant hole, far from all the toxic gossip and venomous words. Staying here would be nothing but self-inflicted misery.
When it was time for dinner, no one bothered to call her.
Ning Shu also didn’t bother to be polite. She went and took three eggs from the stash Wang Ying’s mother had hidden in the cupboard, lit the fire, and made herself fried eggs with noodles.
If she didn’t eat her fill, how could she muster the strength to deal with all this nonsense?
