Chapter 3048: Wanted Ning Shu to Serve as His Widow
Li Bing’s mother, gritting her teeth in anger, wanted to cause trouble for Ning Shu. Many people tried to persuade her to focus on handling her son’s funeral first.
Now that her son was gone, she was filled with fear and had no idea what to do. The villagers helped hastily bury Li Bing.
From start to finish, his mother couldn’t say a single word. She couldn’t even communicate on a basic level, in contrast to how sharp-tongued she had been just days before.
Perhaps the blow was too much for her—her health also sharply declined.
Her rheumatism worsened, and on bad weather days, even walking a few steps became painful.
Still, she went to Ning Shu’s house to cause trouble, demanding that Ning Shu come to her home. Even though her son was dead, she still wanted Ning Shu to serve as his widow.
After all, there had been talks of marriage before.
The main reason, though, was that she wanted someone to serve her. She couldn’t imagine living alone.
But no matter how much she gestured and made a fuss, no one could understand what she was trying to say.
People quickly lost interest. They had seen enough of this kind of behavior.Besides, without her voice, it was like watching a silent film—boring and pointless.
Ning Shu ignored her. She’d like to see how long she could keep this up.
She wrapped the dried ginseng with a cloth, placed it in her bag, and hid it under her bed.
The villagers continued burning paper offerings in order to finish the seven-day ritual. At night, the smoke filled the air.
Ning Shu curled her lips into a smile and released an invisible burst of energy, scattering the burning paper everywhere. Sparks flew in all directions.
Faced with such eerie happenings, many people covered their ears and screamed. Chaos soon ensued.
The mix of screams and barking dogs made for a chaotic yet amusing scene.
Terrified, families rushed to lock their doors and windows.
Wang Ying’s father shook his head and said, “Something’s really off in this village this year.”
Wang Ying’s mother, peering through the door crack, patted her chest and agreed, “It really is unsettling.”
Looking terrified, she asked, “Should we move out of this village?”
“Move where? Where would we go?” Wang Chao’s father said, puffing on his cigarette.
With their family’s financial situation, moving wasn’t an option.
If they left, they might end up without even a place to call shelter.
Moreover, this was their homeland. Where would they move to?
Wang Ying’s father sighed, taking deep drags from his cigarette, looking tired and worn.
Wang Chao eagerly suggested, “What if we move to the city? The schools there are better than the ones here.” The world outside was always much more attractive to boys.
Wang Ying’s father scolded him sternly, “I don’t have that ability, so forget about it.”
Ning Shu listened to their family discussion but didn’t join in.
She planned to leave tonight. Staying here any longer would be meaningless.
She had dealt with everything she needed to—it was time to go.
In the middle of the night, as the village fell silent, Ning Shu wrote a note saying she had left and there was no need to look for her.
Carrying her bag, she tiptoed out, walked to town, and boarded the bus.
To prevent the entrustor from overthinking upon her return, she needed to distract herself and help her realize her purpose in life.
If she had her own job or career and found meaning in her existence, perhaps she wouldn’t care so much about being raped.
She would no longer have that much time for sentimentality.
Ning Shu planned to head to a big city, where there were more opportunities.
With her skills, she would be able to establish herself.
As long as she wanted to live, she would survive. Life could be both resilient and fragile, it all depended on your mindset.
