Chapter 3195: Was Nothing More Than Scrap Metal
Unless those guns and advanced weapons turned into a pile of scrap metal.
It was possible, assuming Yin Qing had no other way of sourcing them. She no longer had her system, but there was no guarantee that she didn’t have ammunition still stored somewhere.
A gun without bullets was nothing more than scrap metal.
And that meant it wouldn’t pose much of a threat.
Bows and crossbows were also deadly weapons in their time, but compared to guns, they were hopelessly outdated.
The problem was that she didn’t know where Yin Qing’s force was stationed.
Ning Shu was worried that when the time came, Yin Qing and Zhuo Cheran would suspect her.
If they came over with their troops on a dark and windy night and opened fire on the entire Marquis Xuanping’s household, it was unlikely anyone would survive.
Ning Shu truly was having a headache over it.
The next morning, as she was eating breakfast, Ning Shu said to Lianqiao, “Go provoke Xiaoqing and try to get a sample of Gu Fanlu’s handwriting.“Just say that his calligraphy is absolutely terrible. You know what to do next, right?” Ning Shu asked.
Lianqiao nodded. “Yes, Miss, I understand.”
After breakfast, Lianqiao cleared the dishes and bowls from the table and said to Ning Shu, “Miss, I’ll go now, but I’m not sure if Xiaoqing will take the bait.”
“Just do your best. If it doesn’t work, then forget it.”
Even without solid evidence, Ning Shu intended to keep Gu Fanlu ‘fragile and delicate’ for a few days.
Once the matter was resolved, if Gu Fanlu was proven innocent, he’d naturally make a full recovery.
While Lianqiao went off to spar verbally with Xiaoqing, Ning Shu picked up a food box and went to find Marquis Xuanping.
His servant told her he was currently in Madame Rongguo’s courtyard.
Since the couple was spending time together, Ning Shu decided not to intrude.
She waited until the marquis returned to his study before going to visit Madame Rongguo.
When Madame Rongguo saw her, she had someone bring a bowl of chilled sour plum soup. “It must have been hot on the way here.”
It was the height of a scorching summer. Ning Shu took the soup, sipped it, and the sour chill instantly refreshed her. It was so satisfying.
“Don’t drink too much. Cold things aren’t good for women,” Madame Rongguo scolded her playfully with a glare.
Still, Ning Shu finished the entire bowl of sour plum soup and then asked, “Mother, is Father really going to give five million?”
Madame Rongguo sighed. “Your father mentioned it again after court this morning. He’s reluctant.”
She looked at Ning Shu seriously. “Five million isn’t a small sum. Our household can scrape together that amount now, but what about in the future?
“What worries me more is you. You’re not even married yet to him, and the heir of Prince Xin is already pulling stunts like this.
“A marriage between two families should be a union, a mutual alliance.”
Madame Rongguo paused there. She looked clearly upset.
Before the marriage even happened, they were already kicking their household when they were down. It showed that Zhuo Cheran never truly cared about her daughter.
To put it plainly, Ning Shu was now being roasted over an open flame. It was obvious the two households wouldn’t be in a mutually supporting relationship if she really married into Prince Xin’s household.
She was nothing more than a disposable pawn. However, if she didn’t marry him, her reputation would be ruined.
Ning Shu cursed inwardly.
She changed the subject and said, “The heat is unbearable now, and the Hanyang region is in a drought. With so many people dying, an outbreak of disease could happen.
“If the disaster gets out of control, the court will surely pin the blame on Father.”
“That’s a real problem…” Madame Rongguo frowned. “I’ll talk to your father. He’s already reallocating money from many of our stores.
“He’s feeling frustrated, but he’s not really going to refuse to pay,” she added.
Ning Shu nodded. Anyone who survived the political battlefield wasn’t a fool.
Marquis Xuanping couldn’t possibly take a hard stance and refuse to contribute. First, he wouldn’t dare provoke the emperor, as that would be disastrous.
Second, if something truly bad happened, all the backlash would fall on him and his household.
By convention, their family was expected to contribute. If they didn’t, the consequences could be severe.
“Mother, please tell Father not only to pay, but to pay quickly. If he delays, His Majesty will be displeased,” Ning Shu said to Madame Rongguo.
Madame Rongguo held Ning Shu’s hand as she said, “You never used to care about these things. Why are you worrying about them now?”
