Chapter 3215: I Went Out to Walk the Horse

After finishing her business, Ning Shu leisurely drove the carriage back.

Lianqiao had just gotten up. When she saw Ning Shu, she quickly asked, “Miss, where did you go?”

“The morning air was nice, so I went out to walk the horse,” Ning Shu replied. She got off the carriage, tied up the horse, and washed her hands.

Breakfast was delivered to them by the manor’s servants. It wasn’t particularly lavish, just two light vegetable dishes.

“Miss, when are we going back?” Lianqiao asked Ning Shu.

“I think you should take some medicine to calm your emotions,” Ning Shu replied.

She kept nagging about going back. They had just arrived, and it made sense to stay at least seven or eight days there. By then, there should be news from the Hanyang region.

Lianqiao: ???

After breakfast, Ning Shu strolled around the manor. It was quite large, with fruit trees, a vegetable garden, penned chickens and ducks, and village dogs running about. Fish swam in the stream, along with dusty little shrimp.

Tenant farmers were weeding in the fields, walking along the ridges with hoes over their shoulders, stepping on the grass-covered mounds between the paddies.

Wildflowers and grasses swayed in the breeze.

It was a peaceful and idyllic rural scene. Staying in a place like this was far more comfortable than being at the marquis’ main residence, where one constantly had to bow and observe formalities.

In the modern world, one wouldn’t be able to find such a beautiful environment, nor such fresh air. Ning Shu took a deep breath and felt immensely refreshed.

Lunch consisted of pan-fried flatbread, which was delightfully chewy. After eating, Ning Shu began working on embroidery, stitching the character for ‘longevity.’

There was no ice in the countryside, so the heat nearly killed Lianqiao. She held two fans—one to cool Ning Shu and the other for herself.

Seeing how Ning Shu wasn’t sweating at all, she asked, “Miss, aren’t you hot?”

“I’m hot,” Ning Shu replied without even looking up.

Lianqiao wanted to say, ‘You don’t look hot at all. You’re fresh and clean and not even sweating.’

At long last, under Lianqiao’s hopeful gaze, Ning Shu finally decided to return.

Lianqiao nearly cried when she climbed into the carriage. They were finally going home.

Ning Shu had stayed at the manor for ten days. When they returned, Madame Rongguo took one look at Ning Shu and immediately said she’d gotten tanned.

Ning Shu drank a bowl of chilled sour plum soup and asked Madame Rongguo, “Mother, what happened? I just went to see Grandmother, and her expression didn’t look good.”

“Your cousin passed away. The Gu family said he fell ill while staying with the Su family, and he never recovered. Your grandaunt simply couldn’t accept it,” Madame Rongguo said with furrowed eyebrows. “Your cousin was so young. How could his health be so poor that he just passed like that?”

Ning Shu’s pupils contracted. This had likely been the work of Marquis Xuanping. He must’ve made Gu Fanlu gravely ill to the point of death.

The medicine Ning Shu had given would only keep Gu Fanlu feeling weak; it couldn’t kill him.

“Did the Gu family come here to cause trouble?” Ning Shu asked.

“They did, but they had no grounds. After all, he didn’t die in our home,” Madame Rongguo said coolly. “Anyway, it seems we can no longer stay on good terms with them.”

Their connection had always been distant. Besides, Gu Fanlu’s actions had made it clear he’d never treated them like family anyway.

After leaving Madame Rongguo’s courtyard, Ning Shu turned to Lianqiao and said, “Go find out what major events have happened lately.”

“Yes, Miss.”

When Lianqiao returned, her face was pale. She said to Ning Shu, “The entire capital is talking about the heir of Prince Xin.”

Ning Shu asked calmly, “What are they saying?”

“They’re saying he’s a war god. He wielded a divine weapon and crushed the rebellion in no time.

“Miss, I heard from someone that the weapon is amazing. You don’t even have to get close to kill someone with it. It can strike from a distance, and it’s completely invisible,” Lianqiao said with intrigue. “Miss, what kind of divine weapon is that?”
