Chapter 3219: The Sight Sent Chills Down Her Spine
Ning Shu had never seen Marquis Xuanping behaving like this before. His face was filled with infatuation. The sight sent chills down her spine.
“Father,” Ning Shu called out.
The marquis put away the firearm. “I know.”
No matter how much the marquis’ household hated to part with it, this was the best time to put pressure on Zhuo Cheran.
After all, Zhuo Cheran had always kicked people when they were down. This time, he deserved a taste of his own medicine.
Zhuo Cheran wielded such a powerful weapon. Was it really possible that His Majesty didn’t feel even a sliver of unease about it?
“But this thing is so powerful. What if…?”
What if he sprayed the entire Marquis residence with bullets? How many people would survive?
Ning Shu sensed her father’s concerns. She looked at the spent shell casings on the ground as she said, “These bullets are disposable. Every one that’s used is gone for good. The prince’s heir probably didn’t have many left after putting down the rebellion.”
She gestured for Lianqiao to take the food box and leave. The next day at court, Marquis Xuanping presented the firearm and even demonstrated its devastating power to the emperor.
The emperor was so startled he nearly leapt from his dragon throne.
This thing was terrifying. Just by pulling its trigger, one could take a life. Even a seven-year-old child could kill with it.
As the emperor imagined this weapon in Zhuo Cheran’s hands, his expression darkened with unease.
Whether or not Zhuo Cheran had improper thoughts, the marquis had successfully planted suspicion of him in the emperor. The price he paid for that, though, was the confiscation of the gun.
The marquis was deeply heartbroken.
Ning Shu took one look at the marquis’ returning expression and knew right away that the gun was gone.
However, as long as the firearm ended up in the emperor’s hands, Zhuo Cheran would no doubt become a source of concern.
Serving the emperor was like serving a tiger. The emperor had once favored Zhuo Cheran, but now that he posed a threat to the emperor’s position, that favor would likely fade.
Ning Shu smiled. Now it was just a matter of waiting for Zhuo Cheran to return victorious.
“Who did you hire to get that thing?” the marquis asked Ning Shu.
Her eyes shifted. “From a down-and-out wanderer. I paid him, and he stole it for me. I can’t find him anymore.”
The marquis narrowed his eyes at her. “Not a single word of truth in that. You’d better spend more time studying the Women’s Precepts with your mother.”
Ning Shu: …
Ning Shu gave a quick curtsy and turned to leave. Like hell she’d study that.
The marquis sighed as he watched her proud little figure walk away. What a pity that she wasn’t a boy.
Zhuo Cheran had successfully quelled the rebellion in Hanyang and returned in triumph. However, instead of receiving a hero’s welcome from the people, things took a different turn for him.
The army wasn’t allowed to enter the city. The emperor issued a decree ordering Zhuo Cheran to camp outside the city walls.
And he didn’t summon him right away, either. Zhuo Cheran was left to wait.
He had won a decisive victory, only to be met with coldness and rejection. It was deeply discouraging.
The troops were agitated and filled with resentment.
Only after the emperor felt the timing was right did he summon Zhuo Cheran into the city. Even then, he had to enter alone.
Zhuo Cheran quickly realized that during the height of the rebellion, he had no choice but to use the weapons delivered by Gu Fanlu. He had known these weapons would stir apprehension. Their destructive power was enough to unnerve even him.
He felt that this trip to the palace might not end well, so he carried a firearm with him for protection.
Once he arrived at the main hall, his suspicions were confirmed. The emperor looked visibly displeased. Zhuo Cheran knelt and saluted him.
“Imperial Uncle, your nephew has returned.”
The emperor replied in a flat tone, “It’s good you’re back. A reward is in order.”
“Thank you for your grace, Imperial Uncle. I was simply doing my duty,” Zhuo Cheran responded respectfully.
