Chapter 3221: The Emperor Was Dead

The emperor was dead. Three mournful tolls of the funeral bell echoed across the entire city.

When Marquis Xuanping heard the chimes, the teacup he was holding slipped from his hand.

“The emperor has passed away?”

The marquis looked visibly shaken. He remembered that today was the day the emperor had summoned Zhuo Cheran. Could Zhuo Cheran have assassinated him?

He grew increasingly uneasy. After all, Zhuo Cheran had never hidden his disdain for the marquis’ household.

If Zhuo Cheran took the throne, it would spell total ruin for their household.

Not long ago, the marquis had even tried to set him up.

He wiped his face. Damn it! Why did Zhuo Cheran despise his household so much?

Ning Shu calmly sipped her tea and said to the restless marquis, “Father, what are you afraid of? It’s certain that Zhuo Cheran killed the emperor.”

“I’m worried about the weapon in his hands, that weapon which is unbeatable on the battlefield,” the marquis muttered.

Marquis Xuanping’s household stood in opposition to Zhuo Cheran. The marquis would be the first to oppose the suggestion of Zhuo Cheran ascending the throne.

Ning Shu set down her teacup, smoothed her long sleeves, and said, “Father, that weapon is not as formidable as you think. Without bullets, it’s just scrap metal.”

“But who knows how many bullets he has? If Prince Xin’s household could produce such a weapon, they likely have a large supply of ammunition. This puts our house in grave danger,” the marquis said grimly.

“We’ll need to make preparations. Hopefully, we can preserve our household.”

At its core, their household was built on commerce. If they couldn’t survive here, they’d simply relocate.

“I’m certain Prince Xin’s household can’t manufacture the bullets. Zhuo Cheran likely has very few left,” Ning Shu said confidently. “Father, trust me. His weapon is not a real threat.”

“And how would you know?” the marquis asked, eyeing her skeptically.

“I paid for the information, so I expect to get what I paid for. I had someone from the martial world investigate the quantity of bullets,” she replied.

“That’s why I urged you to enter the palace without hesitation. Zhuo Cheran might not even succeed in taking the throne. After all, many other imperial princes are also vying for it.

“What you need to do now,” Ning Shu added. “Is to make sure the soldiers outside the city gates don’t get in. They’re just waving around lumps of useless metal to scare people.”

“Are you sure about this?” the marquis asked hesitantly.

Ning Shu nodded. “How could a traitor and usurper possibly ascend to the throne? How could he win the approval of all the civil and military officials?

“The most urgent task now is to shut the city gates.”

With a flick of his sleeve, the marquis stormed out. No matter what happened, he had to try.

Ning Shu stood up and went to massage the old madame.

Yin Qing stared in the direction of the palace. How had things spiralled so far out of control?

That bracelet had been nothing but a cursed object.

It could conjure items from the modern world—guns, tanks, high-tech weapons, and even appliances like rice cookers and cell phones.

But in this electricity-deprived ancient world, most of those items were completely useless. The only thing that held any real power was the firearm.

Yin Qing thought bitterly to herself, if only she had never used that bracelet.

While clenching her fists tightly, she could only hope that the chaos would end soon.

She didn’t even know whether she wanted Zhuo Cheran to live or die.

Everyone in the Yin family was trembling with fear. Yin Qing fought the urge to rush to Zhuo Cheran.

She couldn’t bring disaster upon the Yin family. After all, she had taken over Yin Qing’s body. She had a responsibility to protect her family.

If she ran off now to Zhuo Cheran’s side, and Zhuo Cheran ended up dead by the end of this ordeal, the entire Yin family could be executed.

Yin Qing crouched on the floor, biting her cheek hard. She wanted to go home. She needed to go home. She didn’t want to have to survive in this era anymore.
