Chapter 3524: Owner (5)

Chapter 3524: Owner (5)

As Ning Shu passed by the town square, she saw many dogs in the garden—all sorts of breeds like poodles, bichons, Pomeranians, chihuahuas, and schnauzers.

Ning Shu spotted a husky dog. As it ran, its tongue lolled out and its face was blown into a look of pure, unadulterated stupidity by the wind. It radiated an indescribable aura as it charged toward the other dogs like a lunatic.

It truly lived up to the reputation of being the ‘lunatic’ of the dog world.

Many people kept dogs, but for a working dog like Ning Shu, she could only act like a normal dog once her harness was off. The moment she entered work mode, she had to perform her duties to the best of her ability. It had already become a Pavlovian response.

When they reached the bus stop, Ning Shu and Ying Zhi waited for the bus. Once a bus arrived and the passengers had boarded, Ying Zhi held Ning Shu’s leash and stood by the door, asking the driver, “Excuse me, does this go to Zhoushan Road?”

The driver saw Ying Zhi wearing sunglasses and leading a dog. “It doesn’t. Take the Route 58 bus.”

“Thank you,” Ying Zhi said.

Ning Shu led Ying Zhi back to the platform to wait for the Route 58 bus.

Two more buses passed in the meantime. Ying Zhi kept holding the fruit basket, afraid that if he put it down, he wouldn’t be able to find it again.

When the Route 58 bus finally arrived, Ning Shu quickly led Ying Zhi on board. Since Ying Zhi couldn’t see to pay, the driver took his two coins and dropped them into the fare box for him.

Ning Shu led Ying Zhi to an empty seat and then took up a spot beside him.

Ying Zhi stroked Ning Shu’s head. She noticed that his hand was trembling slightly, likely because he was nervous about seeing Chen Hong and because traveling to an unfamiliar place was a major ordeal for him.

Ning Shu licked his hand.

She felt like she sometimes couldn’t control her physical instincts. Why was she licking such a dirty hand? Did Ying Zhi even wash his hands after using the restroom?

Ying Zhi listened intently to the bus stop announcements. Chen Hong had said it was about five or six stops away.

He kept a mental count of the stops. Ning Shu watched the names flash across the LED screen on the bus, knowing it would be easy to find the address Chen Hong had given.

Ying Zhi’s legs were shaking, probably from nerves.

After six stops, the driver said to Ying Zhi, “Zhoushan Road is here. You can get off now.”

“Oh, okay. Thank you.” Ying Zhi carried the fruit basket and led Ning Shu off the bus.

Well, the first step of the long journey was complete, but where should they go now?

Chen Hong’s house wasn’t so conveniently located that it would be right at the bus stop. Now they had to find her specific building.

Since Ying Zhi couldn’t see, he couldn’t use road signs to find the way.

Taking the bus wasn’t the hardest part. The real challenge was now. Ying Zhi wanted to hail a taxi, but with a large golden retriever like Ning Shu standing there, several taxis sped right past them. None of them wanted the business.

Ning Shu looked at the street signs and pulled Ying Zhi along. Ying Zhi tugged back. “Beibei, don’t just wander around. We’ll get lost.”

Ning Shu barked at him and kept pulling. She reached the entrance of the residential compound and, following the address Chen Hong had given, found the correct building.

Seeing someone opening the door to head downstairs, Ning Shu hurried inside and dragged Ying Zhi up the stairs.

“Beibei, where is this? Beibei…” Ying Zhi was utterly confused as he stumbled up the stairs.

Ning Shu looked at the numbers on the wall. Chen Hong lived in a relatively old residential compound that had no elevator, so everything relied on climbing.

When they reached the fifth floor, Ning Shu stopped at Chen Hong’s door, stood up on her hind legs, and pressed the doorbell.

Ying Zhi: …

He was in a complete daze throughout the entire process. Now that the doorbell had been rung, he was so nervous he wanted to drag Ning Shu away and bolt. He was trembling with anxiety!

“Who is it?” Chen Hong’s voice came from inside the house.

Ying Zhi felt both relieved and anxious. They had found the place, but he was inexplicably terrified.

Through the door, Chen Hong asked, “Who are you? What do you need?”

Ying Zhi didn’t say a word. Ning Shu let out a woof and scratched at the door with her paw.

Chen Hong sounded surprised. “Ying Zhi?”

“It’s, it’s me!” Ying Zhi stammered in reply.

Chen Hong fumbled to open the door.

“How did you get here?” she asked.

“I came to see you. Is your hand any better?” Ying Zhi asked. His face was bright red. Fortunately, neither of them could see, so they didn’t realize how embarrassed the other was.

“How did you find this place?” Chen Hong was amazed that Ying Zhi had found her home, especially since he had never been there before.

“I just… somehow ended up here,” Ying Zhi said with a completely bewildered look on his face. Beibei was even smarter than he had imagined.

“Come in.” Chen Hong had a smile on her face. Ning Shu entered the house and led Ying Zhi to the sofa. Ying Zhi tested the area with his cane and then sat down.

Ning Shu sat by the sofa with her tongue out. She was covered in fur, and the only place she could release heat was through her tongue. She was so hot she felt like an idiot.

“I brought you some fruit.” Ying Zhi set the fruit basket down.

“Thank you!” Chen Hong felt around for a cup to pour Ying Zhi some water, then placed it on the table. “Have some water.”

Ying Zhi, who was drenched in sweat, found the cup and gulped the water down. Ning Shu stared at the cup, thinking, ‘Can I have a sip too?’

Chen Hong stroked Ning Shu’s head and then found a bowl to pour water for her.

“I’ll call my parents and tell them to come back. Are you staying for lunch?” Chen Hong took out her phone to call her family.

Ying Zhi practically jumped out of his seat. “No, no need! I just stopped by to check on you. You don’t need to make lunch. I’m leaving right away.”

Ning Shu, who was drinking water: …

Ying Zhi grabbed his cane and leash, intending to leave, but Ning Shu flopped onto the floor and wouldn’t budge. No matter how hard Ying Zhi pulled, he couldn’t move her.

Sweat poured down Ying Zhi’s face in frustration. “Beibei!”

Ning Shu sprawled out on the floor. It was difficult for Ying Zhi to drag a large golden retriever, especially when he couldn’t see what he was doing.

Chen Hong said with a hint of disappointment, “Alright then. Be careful on your way back. Since I can’t see, I won’t see you out.”

Ning Shu: Young man, at this rate, you’re going to be single forever…

“Beibei…”

Ying Zhi was clearly getting angry. Sweat was dripping off him, partly because of the heat and partly because he was so nervous and embarrassed.

Ning Shu stayed sprawled on the floor. Her collar was pulling so hard that it made her face look swollen, with the skin and fur of her neck all squished up toward her eyes.

Ning Shu: I can’t imagine how derpy I look right now…

“Beibei must be tired. You just got here and already want to leave. Let him rest for a bit, and you should rest too,” Chen Hong said. She felt for the bowl on the floor and poured more water for Ning Shu.

Ying Zhi became even more embarrassed and awkward.

“Beibei isn’t usually like this,” he said.

“It’s fine. Just rest a while before you go.” Chen Hong decided not to call her family after all. If he wasn’t staying for lunch, there was no point in calling her working family members back home.

Ning Shu lapped up her water. Neither of the two people in the room spoke, and the atmosphere became awkward again.

There was nothing worse than a sudden, heavy silence.

Chen Hong tried to find a topic. “How did you get here?”

“We took the Route 58 bus and then walked here,” Ying Zhi said honestly, answering exactly what was asked and nothing more.

“Well, I’ve troubled you for long enough. I should go. Rest well and recover,” Ying Zhi said, while starting to tug on Ning Shu again.
