Chapter 851: Second Hand Embarrassment
Chapter 851: Second Hand Embarrassment
Almost everyone in the audience was singing praises of Petonil.
While the man in question stood at the front with his arms folded, wearing no expression,
as if they weren’t just talking about him.
Petonil looked similar to his son, but had a long beard that was nearly a meter long, reaching all the way down.
He had a habit of constantly running his fingers through his beard.
"Welcome, Sir Petonil." The man making the announcement greeted him.
While last time he didn’t even speak directly to Petophil, was this guy really that capable?
"Thank you." Petonil finally looked straight ahead, puffed out his chest, and greeted, "Hello, Miss Vespera."
"Hmm." Evelyn didn’t look up from the papers and merely hummed. He might be respected all across the universe and be a god,
but to the higher beings, his status was still that of a servant.
And although he was very capable, he had only managed to come this far and earn so much respect because he had good connections with the higher beings,
even having participated in their court cases.
Petonil didn’t mind the lack of a proper greeting. He simply waited for the case to properly begin.
"..." Evelyn already knew most of the details of this case, even more than the gods themselves.
But she still went through everything, trying her best not to leave anything out.
After she finished, the gorgeous blonde finally raised her head and ran her gaze across the courtroom.
Finally pausing at Vritra, lingering there briefly before gesturing with her hand.
"The hearing shall now begin!" the man in black shouted.
But Petonil had been observing Evelyn, and he clearly saw that her gaze had paused at Vritra.
’So, just as my good-for-nothing son had said. She really helped him last time. No wonder he lost such an easy case.’
Petonil suddenly felt he might have been too harsh on his son.
Although the judge herself was against him, Petonil didn’t feel any fear.
He had heard a little about Evelyn and knew she was going to be the next family head.
But with her marriage into the Garissa family, that would become impossible.
Her mother was said to have died a long time ago, or so Fader had declared, though not many had actually seen her.
And her new mother was more than happy to send her away.
"Then I will start." Petonil took the initiative, and Vritra didn’t mind, having faith in Evelyn.
"Go ahead, start with a briefing." Evelyn spoke, after all, the people in the courtroom didn’t know what had happened this time.
"Vritra Arclis and his group are guilty of having committed several crimes. Not only did he enter the gods’ office, steal the entry tokens, completely mess up the arrangements, and force four games to take place simultaneously on the same planet!"
Petonil paused before continuing, "Then these ten entered the games, slaughtered the teams of Level 3 and Level 4 Demi Gods, killed many Level 5 and Level 6 Demi Gods, and completely ruined the games! This resulted in a countless waste of resources, many deaths, and numerous other damages."
Hearing this, the people grew even more animated, chattering in shock at how much this group had done.
It was far more than last time, and playing four games at once?!
That was something none of them had ever heard of. How did these weak Demi Gods manage to accomplish all of that?
Everyone present was extremely curious.
"Okay, your statement has been noted. Now, My L- COUGH... Vritra, do you disagree with any of those claims?" Evelyn asked, looking into his eyes. Her heart pounded, and she almost made a mistake.
She just wanted to keep staring at that dreamy face, too bad the circumstances didn’t allow it.
"No, all of that did happen." Vritra said, not lying. After all, there was simply no point in doing so.
"Okay." Evelyn nodded, then asked, "Then is there a reason behind your actions?"
But before Vritra could speak, Petonil interrupted, "Miss Vespera, I don’t believe there is any need to continue now that he has admitted to his crimes. Though I would like to add one more thing, this man is also related to the Divine! Those two women with him, Yasmine and Teresa, are Divine’s sisters!"
This statement completely stunned the audience, the shock clearly visible on their faces.
The Divine, a name none of them could ever forget.
"That’s a serious claim. Do you have anything to back it up?" Evelyn was annoyed that he had interrupted, but it was better to see all of the opponent’s cards first.
"Of course, I wouldn’t say something without proof." After speaking, Petonil turned back and glanced at the burly god who had both of his eyes missing.
Understanding his role, the eyeless god stood up and bowed respectfully toward Evelyn.
"He is the god whose eyes were stolen by the Divine, and everyone knows that Vritra possesses one of them. Now aren’t you curious where the second eye is?" Petonil asked with a smug look, stroking his beard as confidence filled his face.
The god touched his face, pushing his forefinger and middle finger into his empty eye sockets.
He injected some sort of holy energy into them, causing bright light to shoot out from the empty sockets.
At the same time, a glow appeared on Vritra’s forehead, where the Nether Eye was located.
Everyone gasped in shock.
So the claim was true. He really did possess one of the god’s eyes, further supporting Petonil’s accusation.
"..." Vritra, on the other hand, remained completely calm.
These people wanted him to receive the gravest punishment possible, so of course they were going to drag Divine into this.
"Now, what do you have to say for yourself?" Petonil grinned, turning and looking directly at Vritra for the first time.
’Yessss! That’s it, Father, you’ve got him cornered! I knew you could do it! Hahaha, he is going to die!’ Petophil was overjoyed, looking at his father with deep respect while even clapping.
"Huh? Are you asking me a question? Wow, you must be really famous. Not even asking the judge for permission, it’s almost as if she’s your subordinate." Vritra said, looking impressed.
"Uh..." Petonil froze.
He had developed the habit of controlling the flow of the courtroom like this.
But this was the first time the opposing party had called him out on it. Normally they would already be trembling in fear.
"Petonil, was it? Sir, should I vacate my seat so you can sit here comfortably? You must be thirsty. Should I personally bring you a drink and pour it for you?" Evelyn asked in an extremely polite tone.
But Petonil’s face instantly turned bright red, burning with shame, and he didn’t dare raise his head.
Her tone was polite, but every word felt like a sharp blade carving into his body.
"I- I am sorry." Despite all of his connections, he neither could nor dared offend such a powerful figure.
Even if she killed him here, Evelyn probably wouldn’t receive any punishment.
"..." Petophil in the audience was dying from second-hand embarrassment as he looked at the surrounding people staring at him.
"I- I don’t know him, I was just killing bugs earlier."
"M- Madam, may I ask him a few questions?" Petonil asked, even changing the way he addressed her, afraid of offending her again.
"No!" Evelyn answered without hesitation, leaving him completely baffled.
"So, Vritra, what do you have to say regarding both of those claims?" Evelyn asked, looking at her love.
No matter how hard she tried to remain impartial, there was still a faint trace of softness in both her tone and expression whenever she looked at him.
"Let’s address his second claim first, Evelyn." Vritra spoke casually, and upon hearing that, everyone’s ears perked up in shock.
All of them turned toward Evelyn, waiting for her to rebuke him.
He actually dared to address her by name so casually.
Surely he was finished... or so they hoped.
"Go ahead." Evelyn was euphoric inside. Just hearing her name spoken by him was enough to make her entire body melt.
Huhhhhhhhh?!!
No punishment?
How was this fair?
Everyone instantly felt indignant.
They didn’t even dare look directly at Evelyn for more than a second.
"This eye? While exploring a dungeon, I simply found it lying around." Vritra said nonchalantly, almost giving the eyeless god a heart attack.
Those were his eyes, priceless treasures whose value couldn’t even be estimated, and what?
He had just found them lying around?
The burly god felt utterly insulted and enraged.
His eyes weren’t trash that someone could simply stumble across on the roadside.
The lie couldn’t have been any more obvious.
That bastard was definitely going to die.
"Okay, that is possible. Therefore, one of Petonil’s claims has been dismissed. Since you mentioned the Divine, if you fail to prove that accusation, you will receive a punishment even worse than your son." Evelyn spoke, pointing toward Petophil seated among the audience.
"So, you really are his son? How dare a shrimp lie! You’re dead the moment we leave this place!"
"Pfft! Did he just disown his father to save face? Hahaha! How about I become your daddy instead? Is your mother single?"
The people surrounding Petophil instantly burst into laughter and began mocking him.
’Tsk... this is even worse than I expected. I thought she would at least be a little fair since I’m handling the case now, but she really does whatever she pleases.’ Petonil, as an experienced lawyer, didn’t lose his composure.
He calmly said, "But, Madam, is there any proof that he found it inside a dungeon?"
"Do you have any proof that Divine gave it to me? Haven’t you ever heard of finders keepers? He might have simply thrown it away, so if I happen to find one, am I supposed to just leave it there?" Vritra said mockingly.
"You’re even worse than your son." Vritra added, shaking his head.
