Chapter 979: Planting Something
Chapter 979: Planting Something
"Say, mind if we take a look at that apple tree from up close?" Rael asked.
Gaia turned to him with a puzzled look. "I mean, it is a public display, so yes. We can. It’s just that these people are really tough when it comes to outsiders. So if they give you mean looks or tell you some mean stuff, don’t mind it too much. I promise they don’t mean any actual harm."
Rael nodded and with that, approached the apple tree alongside Gaia. As she said, the looks the two of them got right off the bat weren’t the greatest. In fact, if Rael didn’t know any better, he’d think he had stepped in shit somewhere down the line.
But clearly, that wasn’t the case, as only the guards stared at him weirdly. Gaia, on the other hand, was much more accepted. Whether that was because she was a woman, or because her ears were only slightly pointed, Rael wasn’t sure.
[It’s most likely because they think I’m a half elf. Also, my hair is green, so instead of just any half elf, they think I’m a breed between an Elf and a Dryad. Dryads are basically brethren of the elves, except they are just slightly more attuned to nature,] Gaia explained inside his mind.
Rael opened his mouth in surprise. He never really thought about it that way. But then again, he could also just switch his own appearance to resemble more of an elven look.
But he didn’t. He wanted the raw experience.
"Think I could have an apple?" Rael asked with a chuckle.
Before Gaia could answer, one of the guards present pointed a sword at him.
"You may not consume the goddess’s apples. They’re meant only for our kind."
Damn. She wasn’t kidding.
"My bad." Rael rubbed the back of his head, turning to Gaia.
She just chuckled at the sight and nodded at the guard. "Don’t mind him. He’s from the countryside. A low elf, if you may."
The guard’s eyes widened. "A low elf? But he doesn’t even have our ears."
She shrugged. "Everyone is different. And these apples aren’t just for your race. They’re for everyone. So if you don’t mind, I’ll take two for myself."
With those words, she smiled and pushed the guard aside as she snatched one apple with a form of telekinesis, and then handed one to Rael. He was a little bit surprised by her initiative, but even then, he went ahead and chomped down on the apple.
He was expecting great things, but sadly, the apple tasted like shit. Did someone add something to it?
Though, it seemed like that wasn’t the case, as Gaia wasn’t enjoying it either. Seeing his bitter expression though, she tried her best not to give him a headpat, even though she really, really wanted to.
And just like that, the two of them awkwardly ate their apples and went away from the guards who glared at them fiercely. The city, despite its vast population, didn’t have that many elves present. Granted, Rael could feel the majority of them lurking around in their own homes.
Some were sleeping, others were training, while the vast majority were simply doing nothing but expanding their homes and eating delicious food. It was a fun life, perhaps. Definitely not something Rael would be into.
But then again, the restaurants that were in the main city down below were not too shabby in the slightest. The only caveat was that 90% of the stuff being sold there was vegan.
He had nothing against vegans, but come on... He just wanted some delicious food every now and again.
Speaking of delicious food though, Rael paused as he was about to lead Gaia into a restaurant and turned toward her.
"Why was the apple so... strange tasting?"
"Because that was supposed to be a cherry tree. I have no idea how it turned into an apple tree. Whatever the process was between its planting and its growth, I have no idea what actually occurred," Gaia replied.
Rael whistled. "Touché. How about an idea then? Since you’ve come here after so long, why not plant another tree? Just this time, plant whatever tree you want."
She paused for a moment, then glanced straight into his eyes.
"Why don’t you plant something instead?"
"Me?" Rael pointed at himself. "Are you sure? This is elven culture. I’m a human first, the Supreme Ruler of Reality second."
Gaia shrugged once more. "It’s fine. Choose what you want, and I’ll give you my seed. Uh... I’ll give you the seed."
Mhm.
Rael turned off his naughty thoughts and thought of what he wanted. An apple tree or a cherry tree would seem a bit generic, so maybe something a bit simpler? Something he would actually like to see, and something that didn’t taste as bad as whatever that was.
"Then how about a simple strawberry bush?" Rael said.
"Mm. It’s not a bad choice. Then, is that it?" Gaia asked, prepared to give him a strawberry bush seed. Yet he shook his head and pointed at her.
"You add something too."
"Me?" Gaia tilted her head. "Add what?"
"Whatever you want," Rael replied.
She didn’t think too hard on it, and so she chose something very basic: an apple tree seed. Except, she altered the genetics of both seeds and made it so that instead of the apples being prevalent, it’d be the strawberries instead.
So essentially, instead of a strawberry bush, it would now be a strawberry tree. Coupled with that, the strawberries would be more filling, since they would be as big as apples. She was proud of this little difference, and so, with a single thought, she manifested a small seed in the center of her palm and handed it to Rael.
Perhaps it meant a lot more to him than it did to her, since she was someone who had singlehandedly grown trees on billions, if not trillions, of worlds. So alas, when she handed the seed to him, she just smiled, letting him do the rest.
