Chapter 1401: Work Begins
Chapter 1401: Work Begins
So the poor elementary students sat in the classroom, but unfortunately, it was a mess. They hadn't attended school seriously for many days, and the teachers here were just the wives of the village people, unrelated to them.
The kids who were used to being wild were now actually required to sit obediently in class, taught by those women they looked down on, women they had thrown stones at and cursed.
Each of these kids wondered if these women would take revenge on them.
So each of them was untamable in their wildness.
Looking at them as if they were looking at enemies, ready to run if they dared to hit them.
Bai Yiyi, Yu Weiwei! An Xiaoxiao looked at the kids on the playground.
In their eyes, there was no kindness. If things continued like this, with each generation teaching the next, years later, these kids might all be troublemakers.
Because the evil was all they saw and encountered.
Bai Yiyi sighed; then let's start with them.
"From today, everyone starts studying in the first grade uniformly. With a total of forty kids divided into two classes, there will be teachers specifically for teaching. The subjects to learn now are Chinese, Math, and English. No one can be late or leave early, and if there's something at home, you must ask for leave from the teacher. If anyone dares to be absent without reason or skips class, then this is the punishment."
An Xiaoxiao held up something as an example.
The dried crooked tree in the playground suddenly turned into charcoal, and then a gust of wind blew, turning it into dust.
Dozens of kids opened their mouths wide! They thought they saw a monster.
They looked fearfully at what An Xiaoxiao was holding.
Unbelievable.
That was still a tree. If it were them, they would've probably vanished long ago.
What to do now? Their fathers had told them to just get by and then sneak off to do chores at home.
Now, could they still run?
Bai Yiyi opened the box in front of her, revealing pencils, notebooks, and some stationery! There were several big boxes of old books as well. These were originally meant to be kept in her storage space, prepared as benefits for these kids! Who knew they'd come in handy now.
Many kids' eyes widened when they saw these things. It seemed they were going to be distributed to them! Each immediately perked up.
If they're going to hand out stuff, then attending school isn't so bad.
"These books are for the school's library. Of course, there isn't one now, but we can set up a book corner. Anyone who wants to read can borrow a book, but only one at a time, and it must be returned. A teacher will keep records.
If someone borrows and doesn't return, they will be noted in the book, and at the end of the year, these items will not be awarded to them."
The children's eyes dimmed.
No handouts!
Stingy! Every time those poverty alleviation officers came, they always handed out things directly to them; these teachers were just stingy.
But looking at those backpacks, erasers, and pencils with cartoons on them, they had to admit that they wanted them.
"Also, those who perform well academically will be evaluated by both teachers and classmates at the end of the semester. Outstanding students will receive prizes, not to mention a scholarship from the teacher, so what you want to do depends on you."
The children below cheered, money solved everything.
To get that money, they also needed to study well because their parents were reluctant to give them pocket money.
If they could earn a scholarship on their own merit, wouldn't they be free to buy whatever they wanted?
All at once, all the students were full of motivation.
"Teacher, we will study hard, teacher, let's start class."
The three stood outside the classroom, listening to the children's clear voices reading aloud.
Though mixed with lots of dialects, and the voices were not in unison at all.
In many voices, there were also issues with mispronouncing words or being unable to read.
But they believed these children would change in the future.
The parents of Shibalipu were puzzled. They were waiting at home for the children to return, to go up the mountain to chop wood or cut pig grass.
Who would have thought, not until noon, did the kids return happily.
Upon returning home, they discovered that these little rascals actually wanted to go to school now. They said, as the teacher mentioned, if they learned well, things would be given. They had seen pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and various clothes.
Every household wasn't rich, and upon hearing there were things to be taken, of course, the parents calmed down, allowing them to study well at school for a while, as long as they brought stuff back when the time came.
Anyway, the school didn't charge them now.
Moreover, parents also weren't inclined to care about the kids anymore.
The autumn harvest had just been completed, so there weren't many farm duties, but they were now forced to work on road construction.
Building the road was a big matter, didn't you see the three sons of the village chief's family, who somehow borrowed tractors from the county, brought quite a bit of cement, sand, and stones to the village.
With operations like this, they naturally couldn't build an asphalt road, at most a smooth dirt road.
But still, so many things were brought back.
Everyone felt a bit envious, thinking if the funds were distributed to each of them, at least they could pay their annual dues.
But who dared to say so, the village chief was now sick at home, with his wife caring for matters in the village. Now, it was the village chief's three sons who had the final say.
Not quite, it's not the village chief's three sons who had the final say; instead, it's the village chief's three daughters-in-law who called the shots.
Haven't you seen how the village chief's three sons treated those three daughters-in-law as if they were goddesses, offering them everything?
Whatever Teacher Bai, Teacher An, and Teacher Yu said, that was it.
They saw it clearly, the three sons of the village chief were all henpecked husbands.
Unlike men from other households, when their wives came back home, they'd just be hit or scolded at will, tormented however they wished.
If unhappy, they wouldn't be given food, but in the village chief's home, those three teachers who came to support education, once they entered their gate, it seemed like they had fallen into a lap of luxury.
However, some genuinely worked hard because most families in the village still had a conscience.
Though unable to resist, they didn't want to associate with those people in the village.
But now, as the village was building the road, they naturally also saw it as a way out.
So, whether the village agreed or not, every household contributed.
The village began rotating shifts to work on the road construction.
The tractors brought to the village didn't reach the end, only to the mountain foot.
Even the cement, sand, stones, and such brought back could only be stacked at the foot of the mountain, and they still had to carry them up by hand and shoulder to use them.
However, the three teachers made arrangements, separating people into three groups.
One group was in the front, opening the roads, chiseling stones, transporting soil.
Another group took those chiselled stones and turned them into crushed stones on-site for paving.
And the final group, on the base opened by the front group, started paving the road.
The roadbed had to be compacted, then leveled, paving the surface with cement, sand, and stone.
They didn't want a smooth road; the stone's purpose was to prevent collapse and fragmentation.
Due to the roadbed being solidly laid, ditches were also dug alongside the road.
All these delicate jobs really exhausted the men in the village.
Especially, they realized that a dozen families in the village were made into a dedicated Transport Team, specifically doing the hardest and most laborious work, transporting soil and broken stones. These houses were the ones that had once married those teachers who supported education.
They appeared quite miserable, and when they saw people, they didn't speak, mostly responding with just a few simple approvals.
No one in the village cared about such personal matters.
