Chapter 1045 - 1049: Tailing

Just as she was about to listen in on what they were saying, the woman sitting opposite Yu Liqin turned around and left.

Yu Liqin glanced around, then quickly left as well.

Yunyi narrowed her eyes in the direction where Yu Liqin had gone, then briskly went after the strange woman instead.

If Yunyi didn’t have Inner Strength protecting her, she probably wouldn’t have been able to keep up. This person was clearly professionally trained; if it had been anyone else following her, they would likely have been discovered long ago.

It wasn’t until they reached the Cannery stop that the woman finally stopped.

Yunyi thought she was waiting for a bus, but to her surprise, after loitering there for a bit, the woman headed toward the cannery’s family compound instead.

Yunyi didn’t follow immediately. Instead, she extended her spiritual power outward; every time the woman was about to go beyond its range, she herself would move forward a bit, and watched as the woman entered the Tubular Building and went into a room on the third floor.

After the woman went in, she never came back out, but judging from her behavior and bearing, she didn’t seem like the owner of that place.

She kept checking her watch. After half an hour, she finally took out paper and pen from her handbag and wrote down the four characters for "literary and artistic performance," then pressed the note under a book on the table, leaving just a corner showing.

Seeing those four characters, Yunyi couldn’t help but frown in thought. What did that mean?

She hadn’t heard of any upcoming literary and artistic performance anywhere lately.

When she looked again, the woman had already come downstairs and was walking this way.

For a moment Yunyi was torn: should she wait until the woman left, then go back to the unit to tell Huo Jingrui about this, or should she continue following her?

While she was hesitating, she saw the woman strike up a conversation with an auntie from the family compound. Judging by their manner, the two seemed fairly familiar with each other.

And that auntie was the mother of Sun Lian from the Third Group, who had died in the line of duty some time ago. Yunyi didn’t know why Mrs. Sun was here, but since she knew that woman, there was no need for Yunyi to keep tailing her.

However, the two only chatted about trivial matters. The only useful piece of information was that the woman claimed to be cousins with the owner of that room on the third floor—whether that was true or made up, there was no way to tell.

After the woman smiled and said goodbye to Mrs. Sun, she walked straight toward the bus stop.

Yunyi didn’t leave. Only after she watched the woman get on the bus and buy a ticket from the conductor did she turn and head for the supply-and-marketing store.

On the way she thought that once she finished at the store and went back, she would first go find Huo Jingrui and tell him about this. As for why Yu Liqin could go on living peacefully in the family compound, the army must have its own considerations—she had never asked Jingrui about it.

The store was fairly crowded, but there were no empty jars for sale, so she bought four bottles of canned food instead. Since the New Year was just around the corner, nobody called her wasteful; they probably thought she was preparing gifts.

Carrying her things to the gate of the unit, she was stopped by the sentry on duty. "Comrade, please halt."

"Hello, I’m looking for Huo Jingrui from First Regiment. Please help me notify him."

"And you are?"

"I’m his wife."

As soon as the young soldier heard she was Deputy Regimental Commander Huo’s wife, he said, "One moment."

When Huo Jingrui heard that Yunyi was looking for him, he shot out of the office like a gust of wind, afraid something had happened to her. "Yi’er."

As he spoke, he gave her a once-over from head to toe. Seeing that she was fine, he finally relaxed. "What brings you here?"

Even as he asked, he was already pulling her off to the side.

He knew Yunyi wouldn’t come to him here unless something out of the ordinary had happened.

Yunyi lowered her voice. "I just went to the supply-and-marketing store to buy some things, and accidentally saw Yu Liqin, Company Commander Hao’s wife. She was talking to a strange woman in the grove near her place. The spot was very well hidden—if my eyes weren’t sharp, I probably wouldn’t have recognized them."
