"This is the meal you made?" Qing Zhu looked at the plain porridge and pickles on the table and glanced at Ye Xuan with complete speechlessness. Did she really have to be treated like this? She wanted to eat meat to replenish her strength; she hadn’t eaten any in days. If she didn’t have meat soon, she would go crazy. Yet this man said he’d make a meal, and it turned out to be plain porridge and pickles. She really wanted to smack him. She wondered if she should.

"Yeah, just make do with this meal for now. Tomorrow I’ll go hunting and roast some meat for you," Ye Xuan nodded. He didn’t have time to go hunting today, so this was all they had for now; otherwise, they’d go hungry.

"Fine, I’ll eat." Qing Zhu had no other choice but to sit down and eat the porridge, which tasted so bland she could probably spit feathers. The more she ate, the less flavor there was. This was why she didn’t want to live in the mountains permanently; it was too inconvenient to eat what she wanted.

"Don’t be upset. I really will let you have all the meat you want tomorrow and make sure you’re full," Ye Xuan said, giving her another bowl of porridge.

"Ye Xuan, couldn’t you have bought pickled meat instead of just these veggies? It’s all pickles." Qing Zhu put down her chopsticks and looked at Ye Xuan. She’d eaten pickles for several days in a row, not just this meal. She was at the point of snapping.

"I really hadn’t noticed. Hold on, let me see if there’s any meat." Ye Xuan had picked what he grabbed in a hurry, without checking carefully to see if there was any meat.

"I thought you were meticulous, but it turns out you’re quite the scatterbrain," Qing Zhu said speechless, watching Ye Xuan walk away. What was up with him? She felt exhausted.

"Here you go. There’s no pickled meat, but there’s this can. Go ahead and eat it. It’s fish, but it’s still meat," Ye Xuan handed Qing Zhu the can. He didn’t expect there to be another can in there.

"Alright, I got it. Just eat your meal." Qing Zhu placed it on the table. It wasn’t that she was picky, but if a kid doesn’t get some animal protein in a while, they could lack nutrition.

"Qing Zhu, sorry, I got too excited about spending quality time together and didn’t think it through. Otherwise, I would have asked someone to help prepare in advance," Ye Xuan looked at Qing Zhu guiltily. How could he make such an elementary mistake?

"Alright, here’s your chance to make it up to me." Qing Zhu directly took up his words; since he admitted his fault, that was good enough for her.

"What opportunity?" Ye Xuan asked eagerly, looking at his wife, unsure of what she wanted him to do.

"Feed this to Yuran, make sure to remove all the bones, okay? Don’t let her choke," Qing Zhu handed the can to Ye Xuan, telling him to feed their daughter.

"Okay, just eat your meal. You take half, and the child takes the other half." Ye Xuan took a small bowl and separated half for her, leaving the rest for Qing Zhu.

"You eat, too. You have a hard time as well." Although Qing Zhu wanted meat, she felt bad eating it all by herself.

"I’m a grown man; it’s okay if I don’t eat. If I had thought things through better, this wouldn’t have happened," Ye Xuan, being a man, wouldn’t feel right competing with his wife and daughter for food. Since there was something to eat, it should go to them first. If he ate any more, he’d be too embarrassed.

"Don’t argue, just eat half each. Open your mouth." Qing Zhu watched as Ye Xuan pushed it away and back again. They could just split it. Why waste time fussing over it?

"Alright, as you say," Ye Xuan complied seeing that Qing Zhu was getting upset. There was no need to get worked up; it wasn’t good for health.

Getting upset was hard on the liver, so it was better to stay calm. Thus, he stopped bickering with his wife. It was his fault, to begin with, so he’d bring back more game tomorrow to make it up to her.
